Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
At this moment, Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng were unaware that their Grandaunt and Granduncle had already driven their leaky, shabby carriage into the city, dusty and travel-worn.
After Xiao Heng returned to his room, Gu Jiao tied her now-dry hair into a simple bun on top of her head and headed to the secret chamber.
Xiao Heng’s handiwork was impressive; her legs no longer felt as sore and weak as before.
Gu Jiao placed the little medicine chest into the groove in the wall, changed into sterile clothing, and entered the intensive care unit.
The time flow in the two dimensions was consistent: one hour outside equaled two hours here.
However, the date displays on the instruments seemed broken, showing only the time.
It was now 1:39 a.m.
Gu Changqing lay on the cold hospital bed, covered in tubes and wearing an oxygen mask.
The room was silent, except for the faint mechanical sounds from the equipment.
Gu Jiao could clearly hear his labored breathing; it was rough, strained, and weak.
The sword qi from that person had shattered his internal force, severely damaging his organs and breaking half of his meridians.
Despite using the best medicine on him, she still couldn’t guarantee he would pull through.
Beep.
The door behind her opened.
It was the Imperial Advisor, dressed in sterile clothing, walking in with ease.
“How did you get in?” Gu Jiao asked.
She distinctly remembered locking the iron door’s mechanism from the inside.
“That door can be opened from the outside.” The Imperial Advisor replied as he walked to the bedside.
If it could be opened from outside, did that mean he deliberately refrained from barging in earlier to interrupt the Emperor’s punishment of the Crown Prince?
This man was truly peculiar. Though he was one of the Xuanyuan Family’s perpetrators, he repeatedly helped her, someone connected to the Xuanyuan Family.
The Imperial Advisor looked at the unconscious Gu Changqing and said, “You should rest. I’ll keep watch tonight.”
Gu Jiao didn’t move.
Perhaps sensing her distrust, the Imperial Advisor slowly said, “He came to see me, for your sake.”
Gu Jiao’s eyes flickered slightly.
The Imperial Advisor continued, “His purpose in coming to the State of Yan was to cure your illness. What happened to him now isn’t your fault. You don’t need to blame yourself; you’ve risked your life for him too.”
As he spoke, he turned to glance at Gu Jiao, just as she was looking at him.
Gu Jiao’s eyes were full of confusion, clearly unaware of what he was referring to.
The Imperial Advisor explained, “At the State of Zhao’s border, when you killed Tian Lang. You knew the chances of defeating him were slim but still tried to eliminate Gu Changqing’s greatest rival, nearly dying in the process and contracting a plague.”
Gu Jiao looked away, staring at Gu Changqing as she muttered, “Why would he tell you about that?”
The Imperial Advisor patiently explained, “I needed to know your past, every detail about the people and events you encountered before and after losing control. Only then could I provide the most accurate diagnosis.”
Gu Jiao asked, “So, have you made a diagnosis?”
The Imperial Advisor shook his head. “No. Your condition is complex and unique. However…”
He paused mid-sentence.
“However what?” Gu Jiao looked at him.
The Imperial Advisor said, “I’ve encountered a few cases somewhat similar to yours.”
Gu Jiao frowned. “Do you always talk in circles?”
The Imperial Advisor cleared his throat. “I mean, their conditions are somewhat like yours but not exactly the same. They also lose control, mostly during combat. The triggers vary, some are provoked by inner rage, others by life-threatening situations. When not out of control, they’re no different from ordinary people.”
Gu Jiao thought for a moment. “Does their strength increase after losing control?”
The Imperial Advisor replied, “It does, but not as significantly as yours. That’s why I said their cases are similar but not identical to yours.”
Indeed, they were different. The violent factors in her body were ever-present, but she had grown accustomed to their existence.
It was like someone born with pain—they would come to see pain as normal.
Blood could trigger her loss of control, making her suffer even more, but after years of training, she had learned to manage it well.
Uncontrollable situations occurred during battles—blood, conflict, and death combined to push her over the edge.
The Imperial Advisor said, “Over the years, I’ve studied why those people initially lost control. It turns out they weren’t born that way; it happened after poisoning. You’ve met Fifth Master Han, what do you think of his martial skills?”
Gu Jiao replied honestly, “Not bad. Wait, is he one of them?”
The Imperial Advisor responded, “He’s the most stable one and rarely loses control. I included him because his internal force surged after poisoning, but the cost was accelerated aging.”
Gu Jiao stroked her chin. “So that’s why he turned gray-haired at such a young age. What kind of poison is that powerful?”
The Imperial Advisor shook his head. “I haven’t identified it yet. The others have lost control at least three times each. These people are all formidable experts, but two of them are particularly dangerous.”
He emphasized the word “dangerous.”
Given his status, for him to describe them this way meant they were far beyond ordinary danger.
Gu Jiao licked her lips curiously. “Who are they?”
The Imperial Advisor said calmly, “I don’t know their real names, only their aliases in the martial world—one is called An Hun (Dark Soul), the other is called Shi Tian (Sky Slayer).”
Such impressive names—my own nickname, Heaven Dominator, seems a bit lackluster in comparison.
The Imperial Advisor saw her conflicted expression and assumed she was pondering their identities, unaware she was fretting over martial world aliases.
He said, “An Hun is now Imperial Noble Consort Han’s aide. If I’m not mistaken, he’s the one who injured Gu Changqing.”
Great, he even knows Gu Changqing’s real name.
The Imperial Advisor added, “I must warn you not to seek revenge against An Hun lightly. You’re no match for him. The only person who can defeat An Hun is Shi Tian, but Shi Tian disappeared from the State of Yan twenty-one years ago. No one knows where he went, and he hasn’t been heard from since.”
Twenty-one years ago.
Wasn’t that the year the late Emperor of the State of Zhao passed away?
Before his death, the State of Zhao’s late Emperor bestowed four Dragon Shadow Guards to Princess Xinyang and left a decree for her to marry Marquis Xuanping during his mourning period.
Long Yi had appeared during that chaotic time.
Gu Jiao looked at the Imperial Advisor and asked, “How old is Shi Tian?”
The Imperial Advisor thought for a moment before answering, “He was young when he disappeared, about thirteen or fourteen.”
That matched Long Yi’s age.
Could it really be Long Yi?
Gu Jiao recalled the portrait she had seen in the library, the boy in the painting who bore a striking resemblance to Long Yi.
Feigning nonchalance, she asked, “Can I see portraits of An Hun and Shi Tian?”
……
At dawn.
The Emperor woke up groggy and fatigued from his medicated sleep. The lingering effects of the medicine left him dizzy and sluggish.
Hearing movement, Zhang Dequan quickly got up from his makeshift bed and approached quietly. “Your Majesty, you’re awake? Does your head still hurt? Shall I summon the Imperial Advisor?”
“No need.” The Emperor sat up, gathering his thoughts before asking, “Where are the Third Princess and Little Xue?”
The Third Princess?
The Emperor hadn’t called Shangguan Yan that since before her full-moon banquet. After she was named Crown Princess at the banquet, he only referred to her as “Crown Princess” in public or “Yan’er” in private.
He might slip and call her Crown Princess by mistake.
But he would never mistakenly call her the Third Princess.
It seemed the little dragon stranded on the shoals was about to reclaim her imperial identity.
Zhang Dequan promptly reported, “Your Majesty, the Little County Princess is resting in the adjacent room. I’ve arranged for a wet nurse from the imperial palace to care for her. As for the Third Princess, she was in the secret chamber for hours for emergency treatment. She already had old injuries, with nails in her spine… and she took a sword strike meant for you. Commander Xiao said… whether she wakes up depends on the Third Princess’s luck.”
For a moment after waking, the Emperor felt he might have been too harsh in punishing Shangguan Qi. Initially, Shangguan Qi hadn’t intended to kill him; it was the assassin who acted independently, goading the Crown Prince into regicide.
But upon hearing that Shangguan Yan might not survive, the Emperor’s fury reignited.
Why didn’t Shangguan Qi step forward to take the blade?
His men rebelled, but it was Shangguan Yan who got stabbed!
He didn’t even try to stop it; was he too scared? Ha, more likely he silently approved of the assassin’s actions!
The Emperor’s imagination ran wild yet again, and the more he thought about it, the angrier he became. “I should’ve deposed him long ago!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
