The Emperor looked at the Crown Prince with profound disappointment, suppressing his overwhelming anger and heartbreak. “You are unworthy of your position! To even contemplate patricide and regicide! It’s Zhen’s fault for failing to notice the signs early on, allowing your ambition to grow unchecked until it reached this irredeemable point! Thankfully, it’s not too late to set things right. Zhang Dequan!”
Xiao Heng turned around, his expression blank as he muttered, “Imperial grandfather, Eunuch Zhang isn’t here.”
The Emperor responded without hesitation, “Then you take note!”
Xiao Heng, still dazed, nodded stiffly and stammered, “Uh, yes, imperial grandfather, please instruct me.”
The iron door was actually thick and soundproof, but for those with internal force and heightened senses, hearing the conversation inside was no challenge.
When the Emperor finished proclaiming his decree with resolute authority, a desperate wail erupted from the secret chamber, “No, imperial father—don’t!”
Ye Qing couldn’t help but glance at the Imperial Advisor again.
“What should we do? The door won’t budge—wait, it’s open! It’s open!”
Of course, it opened. Xiao Heng had activated the mechanism again.
He did it discreetly, making it appear to others that Yu He had successfully pried the door open.
However, Ye Qing knew very well that this iron door couldn’t be forced open with any tools.
The Eldest Imperial Grandson and Xiao Liulang had assumed locking it from the inside would prevent anyone from breaking in, but they didn’t realize there was another master mechanism outside. A simple pull could cause the iron door to collapse instantly.
This mechanism was known only to Ye Qing and the Imperial Advisor.
Ye Qing wanted to ask his master why he hadn’t opened the door earlier, but in the end, he said nothing.
As the Imperial Advisor’s disciple, his duty was to trust and follow his master without question.
Once everyone entered the secret chamber, Gu Jiao spoke calmly, “Everyone, please leave. She cannot be moved, and I need to stitch her wounds here. Your Highness, I’ll trouble you to fetch my medicine chest from my room.”
“Alright.” Xiao Heng replied.
“Imperial Advisor.” The Emperor said, turning to the Imperial Advisor.
Gu Jiao grew concerned that this man might say, “Let me take a look,” which would expose them.
But the Imperial Advisor merely said, “Your Majesty, let us step out for now.”
Seeing the Imperial Advisor’s suggestion, the Emperor didn’t insist. After all, it was Xiao Liulang who had saved Shangguan Yan from the brink of death last time.
It seemed Xiao Liulang’s medical skills surpassed even the Imperial Advisor’s.
The group left the secret chamber.
Xiao Heng retrieved Gu Jiao’s medicine chest and then exited the chamber himself.
He had a legitimate reason to stay inside, but being outside was safer. First, it prevented anyone from barging in, and second, he needed to handle Gu Chengfeng’s “corpse.”
The Emperor’s face was contorted with rage, and his recurring headache flared up again.
Xiao Heng supported him and said with concern, “Imperial grandfather, please rest in the sideroom. I’ll take care of everything here.”
The Emperor nodded and went to the sideroom across the hall.
Xiao Heng summoned his coachman and instructed him to find a place to bury the “corpse.”
Inside the secret chamber, Shangguan Yan had fallen asleep.
To simulate the effects of excessive blood loss, she had taken a medication that lowered her body temperature and weakened her pulse. The side effect was drowsiness, and she had actually dozed off.
Gu Jiao hadn’t anticipated that she would really fall asleep.
How could someone be so unconcerned?
Shangguan Yan: Ha, do you think crying doesn’t take energy?
Gu Jiao first removed the blood packs and the pork props from Shangguan Yan’s body, carefully replacing her with clean, dry clothes. Only then did she take her little medicine chest and place it into a recess in the wall.
The entire incident today had been a setup from start to finish.
From the moment Gu Changqing, gravely injured, sought out Gu Jiao, he had decided to use his injury to do one final thing for her.
His plan was to feign an assassination attempt on the Crown Princess and frame the Crown Prince.
After all, everyone knew he was a close aide of the Crown Prince, and he had participated in the selection process as a member of the Han family.
Even if the Crown Prince tried to claim he was a spy, few would believe it.
However, after rehearsing the scenario, they realized flaws in the plan. Gu Changqing had frequented the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, and its disciples recognized him. Pang Hai also knew that Gu Changqing had once saved “Xiao Liulang.”
Gu Changqing had met “Xiao Liulang” first and only later joined the Crown Prince’s faction. No matter how one looked at it, it seemed more like they had planted Gu Changqing as a spy in the Crown Prince Estate.
After reconsidering, Xiao Heng devised a completely new plan. He had Little Nine deliver a message to summon Gu Chengfeng.
Gu Chengfeng needed to act quickly, disguising himself as Gu Changqing before the Crown Prince could forcibly search the Imperial Advisor's Hall.
As Gu Changqing’s younger brother, Gu Chengfeng shared similar facial features, and with Gu Jiao’s expert mimicry makeup skills, anyone unfamiliar with them wouldn’t notice any difference.
Apart from Gu Chengfeng’s crucial role, the success of the entire plan hinged on two key factors.
The first was to lure away the death warriors stationed outside the secret chamber. Although Xiao Heng didn’t know martial arts, his status as the Eldest Imperial Grandson made it easy for him to deceive two death warriors of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.
Such was the ability of Old Chief’s disciple.
Once the death warriors were drawn away, Gu Jiao brought both Gu Chengfeng and Gu Changqing into the secret chamber. She opened the operating room with her little medicine chest and had Gu Changqing lie inside.
This operating room existed in a separate dimensional space. Once the little medicine chest was removed, it became completely invisible to others.
As for Gu Chengfeng, he was left behind in the secret chamber.
Time was pressing, and Gu Jiao didn’t have a chance to properly lock the brass lock.
She was genuinely worried that the Imperial Advisor might notice something was off and figure out it was her doing, then go so far as to distract the Emperor to clean up her mess.
Why did she feel that the Imperial Advisor would cover for her? She couldn’t figure it out either. Clearly, he was a cunning fellow, yet she was concerned he might actually come to her aid.
It was a strange kind of worry.
Fortunately, the Imperial Advisor didn’t instruct Ye Qing to shield her.
This allowed the rest of the plan to proceed smoothly.
The second key to success was the Emperor himself.
According to their original plan, they intended to create a commotion in the Qilin Hall with the Crown Prince, forcing the Emperor to intervene. However, unexpectedly, the Emperor arrived on his own, at least half an hour earlier than anticipated.
That half an hour shouldn’t be underestimated. After all, the earlier the plan was completed, the sooner Gu Jiao could enter the operating room to save Gu Changqing.
They were racing against death itself, and the Little County Princess’s unintentional actions had bought Gu Changqing a chance for survival.
Beep, beep, beep...
The cold, mechanical sound echoed from the medical equipment.
Gu Jiao walked over.
Gu Changqing, now dressed in a hospital gown, lay weakly on the operating table.
His injuries were severe, and his consciousness had long been blurred. Yet, at the very moment Gu Jiao approached him in her surgical attire, it was as if he sensed her presence. Slowly, he forced his heavy eyelids to open.
He was wearing an oxygen mask and lacked the strength to speak.
“Don’t talk.” Gu Jiao said, noticing his labored breathing. “You need to conserve your energy. Also, I’m about to perform surgery on you.”
With that, she prepared to administer anesthesia, only to realize there was none in the little medicine chest.
Suddenly, she remembered that Gu Changqing had an extremely rare condition that made him resistant to anesthesia.
The little medicine chest had already identified his condition, which was why it didn’t provide anesthetics for him. The last time at the border, she had stitched his wounds without anesthesia as well.
But the previous injury wasn’t this severe, and he had managed to endure it.
Gu Jiao suddenly felt the scalpel in her hand grow unbearably heavy, as though it weighed a thousand pounds.
She took a deep breath to steady herself.
Gu Changqing’s heart rate and blood pressure began to plummet rapidly. The monitor displayed a red line, and the alarm blared.
Gu Jiao frowned deeply, realizing that Gu Changqing’s injuries were far worse than her initial diagnosis.
Gu Changqing had been using the last remnants of his internal force to stabilize his condition, creating the illusion that his injuries weren’t as critical!
He didn’t have an hour to wait; he couldn’t even last half an hour!
Gu Jiao gripped the scalpel tightly. “Why would you do this?”
If she had known his injuries were this severe, she would never have agreed to the plan to bring down the Crown Prince. She would have performed the surgery immediately, regardless of whether the Crown Prince found them or not!
Gu Changqing gazed weakly at his sister, his bloodless lips curling faintly.
You want to send Little Jing Kong home. I want to send you home too.
Even if I fall, I want to become the bricks beneath your feet, paving one more stretch of road to take you home.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
