Chapter 298: Chapter 283: It’s Over, Things Have Gotten Out of Hand (Part 2)
The two men sat in the jeep, their expressions grim.
Far from being happy they’d solved the case, they were deeply worried...
Chu Zhengxiong glanced back. "So, spill it. What did you figure out?"
Mo Yanfeng stiffened, his expression serious. "That bat wasn’t the real culprit, was it? There’s another beast?"
Hearing this, Chu Zhengxiong smiled and nodded.
"Not bad. Looks like you’re learning."
"Just now, after I killed that bat and was about to leave, another, much stronger aura appeared on the rooftop. If I’m not mistaken..."
"...the real killer is still up there. It just threw that bat at us as a probe, to test our strength."
After Chu Zhengxiong finished, Mo Yanfeng glanced at him.
"So what’s the plan? Are we just going to turn this in and call it a day? Or..."
"Call it a day my ass! The case isn’t closed. You want to fob Captain Meng off with this thing? Even if he bought it, could you live with yourself?"
The words had barely left his mouth when Mo Yanfeng slammed on the brakes and pulled a sharp U-turn.
He sped back toward the crime scene.
A dozen minutes later, they were back at the crime scene. One after the other, they got out of the car.
CLICK—
Chu Zhengxiong lit another cigarette and started puffing away.
Mo Yanfeng shot him a look. "You could try smoking a little less. Do you get through two packs a day?"
"Mind your own damn business. The aura’s still here. Let’s go up and take a look!"
Chu Zhengxiong said impatiently.
They entered the building and took the elevator to the top floor.
A flight of stairs led from the top floor to the rooftop.
The moment they pushed open the door to the rooftop,
a massive object came hurtling toward them.
"Holy shit..."
Chu Zhengxiong shoved Mo Yanfeng aside.
They had just thrown themselves to the left and right when a huge boulder smashed directly into the rooftop door.
BOOM—
With a deafening crash, the boulder caved the door inwards.
Only then did they get a look at what was opposite them.
A bizarre creature that looked like a withered tree root was advancing on them, brandishing its limbs.
"Is that a fucking tree root that came to life?"
Chu Zhengxiong cursed and quickly rolled to the side.
The next instant, a tentacle slammed into the spot where Chu Zhengxiong had just been.
If he’d been a fraction of a second slower, the tentacle would have run him through.
Just then, an iron chain lashed out from the other side.
CRACK—
The instant the iron chain touched the root,
a serpent of fire erupted and spread along its length,
binding the creature tightly.
The moment the root monster’s tentacle touched the fiery serpent,
it immediately caught ablaze, the flames spreading rapidly.
Seeing this,
the root monster hastily severed its own burning tentacle.
Then, its other tentacles began lashing out at Chu Zhengxiong and Mo Yanfeng.
The two men quickly scrambled away, rolling a few times on the ground
to put some distance between themselves and the root monster.
Only then did Chu Zhengxiong pull his giant blade out of his Storage Magical Artifact.
"You son of a bitch! I’ll hack you to pieces!"
With that, Chu Zhengxiong charged at the root monster.
Mo Yanfeng remained silent, the Iron Chain Whip in his hand moving like a living Spiritual Snake.
Wreathed in flames, it swept toward the root monster once more.
The root monster was afraid of fire. When it saw Mo Yanfeng’s Iron Chain Whip, it hastily backed away,
focusing all its attacks on Chu Zhengxiong.
Tentacle after tentacle tangled with the giant blade in Chu Zhengxiong’s hands.
Chu Zhengxiong’s strength was immense, and his giant blade swept in wide, powerful arcs.
With a single downward slash, he sliced through several tentacles.
Just as he was about to seize the opportunity to rush in and kill the root monster...
...he saw the severed tentacles grow back in an instant.
They immediately resumed their frenzied assault on Chu Zhengxiong.
"Old Mo, burn it! This thing’s afraid of fire!"
Mo Yanfeng nodded, and his Iron Chain Whip struck out at the root monster again.
With Chu Zhengxiong on one side and Mo Yanfeng on the other,
neither of them was an easy opponent.
The root monster possessed a fair amount of intelligence. Seeing it was outmatched, it began to fight while retreating.
Just as its desiccated body reached the edge of the rooftop,
it suddenly collapsed as if it were a pile of sludge.
It rapidly went limp, melting into a puddle of liquid on the ground.
The liquid was alive, and it began to flow toward the edge of the rooftop.
Seeing this, Chu Zhengxiong cursed, "Shit!"
He gripped his giant blade and raced toward the edge of the rooftop.
By the time the two of them arrived at the edge, one from the left and one from the right,
they saw that the puddle of liquid had already streamed down the side of the building.
The moment it hit the ground, it congealed back into the form of the root monster.
Its body, over two meters tall, took off at a run, sprinting into the distance with long strides.
"AHHHH..."
Screams echoed from below.
The screech of tires also resounded from the street.
The root monster’s appearance immediately caused widespread panic.
A few martial arts students even gave chase.
But with a few flicks of its tentacles, the monster knocked them all to the ground.
The street below instantly descended into chaos.
As the root monster disappeared into the night, Chu Zhengxiong’s face darkened. "We’re screwed. This has gotten way out of hand."
Mo Yanfeng glanced at him. "That thing is smart, and its attacks are vicious. It’s not going to be easy to take down."
