1291 Chapter 28 Mao Mao love story

"What do you mean?" Fen Wén abruptly stood up and grabbed the girl’s collar, "He’s engaged?! Are you sure??"

The girl looked really panicked that the others couldn’t help but pity her. Including the girl who was being grabbed by Fen Wén. Lowering her gaze, she spoke, "That’s just a rumour..."

She gulped nervously not wanting to tell Fen Wén what kind of rumour they heard. Fen Wén always stayed around Mao Mao so it’s normal for her to not know any rumour circulating around the palace.

Hearing this, Fen Wén bit her lips and asked, "Tell me what kind of rumour you heard, " she paused a bit before adding, "Even if it’s just a rumour."

The girl looked serious to the point of making the other girl started to regret her loose mouth. Still, since Fen Wén asked for it, the girl reluctantly answered.

"I heard from the maidservant at the main palace that his majesty is arranging an engagement for Mao Mao..."

The girl pursed her lips, "And I heard that the one chosen to be the candidate is the daughter of the current finance minister..."

She stopped talking and peeked at Fen Wén who already let go of her collar. At this moment, Fen Wén’s gaze turned blank. Her head spun around and only one word rang in her mind.

Engagement.

"W-why his majesty..." Fen Wén weakly asked without completing her sentence but the other girl already knew what she wanted to ask.

Darting her eyes around, the other maidservant answered, "That...I heard it’s because Lord Mao Mao is old enough to be engaged...he is already 16, about to 17..."

Even though Mao Mao looked like 13 years old teen, in fact, he was already way older than that. Fen Wén herself was already 16 but her appearance looked like a 13 years old girl.

Hearing this, Fen Wén subconsciously bit her lips. She just realized that Mao Mao was indeed slowly becoming a fully-grown adult.

Teens her age should already get a fiance or fiancee. She didn’t have any partner for now but it didn’t mean Mao Mao couldn’t have one too.

The realization hit Fen Wén hard. Once again she was reminded of her position. She’s indeed someone from the dragon race and came from a rather good family too but...

Mao Mao was the prime minister despite not coming from the dragon race. He had a mixed-blood of the mythological beast so he did count as one.

Whereas she’s just a maidservant. She was once the empress dowager’s personal maidservant but that’s only because her family was close with the empress dowager.

It didn’t mean anything else. Now Mao Mao was about to be engaged with the daughter of the finance minister...

Fen Wén went silent. The girl didn’t move and just tightened her knuckle until it turned white, worrying the other girls.

"Don’t think too much, it’s just a rumour ah!" The girl who first said the rumour hurriedly consoled Fen Wén. She knew that Fen Wén harbour a romantic feeling for Mao Mao.

Like who didn’t know about it when the girl literally stayed all-day beside Mao Mao? It couldn’t be helped!

Even the other maidservants watching this scene pitied Fen Wén as falling in love with the one they served would always end up bad for them.

"Yeah, it’s just a rumour! You can’t trust rumour, " another girl chipped in wanting to at least calm Fen Wén who looked like she’s about to cry.

The girl glared at the one who started the trouble signalling her not to say anything else that might further hurt Fen Wén.

Of course, the troublesome girl shut her mouth tight while waiting for Fen Wén to respond.

Fen Wén only nodded lightly at these two’s words yet didn’t say anything at all. She slowly turned around and walked out of the resting room, wobbling.

One would immediately see that the girl was obviously not alright. She kept clutching the cloak she wore as she disappeared from everyone’s sight.

Once Fen Wén was gone, the silent resting room started to become noisy again. This time the girls blamed the first maidservant who brought up the rumour.

"Hey, you know that Fen Wén like Lord Mao, how could you tell her that rumour??" A girl in pale green clothes nudged the girl wearing red clothes, the one starting the case.

The girl in red knitted her eyebrows in displeasure despite feeling a bit guilty, "But that’s the truth! I just want her to stop imagining things that she can’t have!"

She won’t admit that she’s jealous of Fen Wén looking close to Lord Mao.

All the other girls rolled their eyes in annoyance seeing the culprit was so stubborn not wanting to admit her fault.

"Whatever, just don’t bring up that rumour anymore, " the oldest one among them decided to seal the case.

Another girl chipped in, "Yeah, what if the rumour is wrong? Don’t just go around spreading false news otherwise..." she paused and her words were continued by a girl in a yellow dress.

"Otherwise you might be killed for your loose mouth!" The girl smirked as she folded her arms in front of her chest, scaring the girl in red.

It’s true that the servants and maidservants here had to be careful not to offend anyone with their gossiping else...with the current emperor being a cold-blooded tyrant...

They could die anytime.

The girl in red subconsciously covered her mouth and nodded her head in a hurry, afraid that what she said today might blow up resulting in her mishap.

Alright, let’s stop gossiping! It’s just a rumour anyway...

Or not.
