Chapter 670: Chapter 670: That’ll Teach You to Run Your Mouth (6)
A victory in this round meant you didn’t have to run ten laps and could also participate in target practice.
This round’s opponents were decided by drawing lots. Vera Xavier drew Shirley Ewing. She smiled at Shirley and said, "Good luck, Shirley. I won’t go easy on you!"
Shirley Ewing pursed her lips. "I may be shorter than you, but I’m heavier, and I’m stronger. Vera, we may be good friends, but I won’t show any mercy either!"
A whistle blew, and the third round of the competition officially began.
Shirley Ewing reached out to grapple with Vera Xavier. Vera just smiled, grabbed Shirley’s hand, and flipped her onto the soft mat with a shoulder throw.
Shirley was still a bit dazed when she hit the mat. It wasn’t until Vera reached out a hand to pull her up that she realized she had already lost. She pouted, whimpering, "Vera, you’re bullying me!"
Vera couldn’t help but laugh. After Shirley got to her feet, she asked, "How did you do that?"
Vera spread her hands. "No idea. Maybe I’m just a legendary martial arts prodigy?"
Shirley burst out laughing. "You really never miss an opportunity to praise yourself!"
Vera laughed along with her. They had been through nearly half a month of military training together, and on top of that, they were roommates. By now, they’d forged a camaraderie in the trenches, so they weren’t going to get worked up over a single win or loss.
The same couldn’t be said for the others, however. Vera had barely left a scratch on Shirley, but many other students had picked up minor injuries. Some were red in the face and fuming after their matches.
Of the girls in Vera’s dorm, everyone except for Shirley advanced to the next round.
Susan Caldwell also advanced from her squad.
The drill instructors led the losing students away to run laps, while the winners were reorganized into new squads. Coincidentally, Vera Xavier and Susan Caldwell were placed in the same one.
In total, only a little over a hundred students had won, a ratio of roughly one in ten.
The members of the newly formed squads couldn’t help but feel a little superior as they watched the others still running laps. Their celebration was cut short, however, when the drill instructors announced some news that quickly soured their mood: all selected students would have to undergo an enhanced training program, with a difficulty equivalent to that of new military recruits!
Vera sighed heavily. ’I’ve finally figured it out,’ she thought. ’My dear brother is a massive troll. Everything he’s done during this training has had a hidden purpose, a hidden trap. You think you’ve won and can finally rest, but it turns out he has an even bigger ordeal waiting for you!’
Vera tried to console herself. ’In any case, this kind of military training is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. It’s a pretty good experience, really.’
Her eyes flicked toward Susan Caldwell, who was standing to her front and left. ’With the way Sheldon is running this training,’ she thought, ’I should get plenty of opportunities to crush Susan.’
Susan Caldwell’s thoughts weren’t so different from Vera’s. ’If I’d known this was going to happen, I would have just lost and gone to run laps,’ she fumed internally. ’At least I wouldn’t have to go through this misery. Now I’m in the same squad as Vera... I’m starting to suspect Sheldon is doing this just to mess with me.’
But in this, Susan Caldwell was truly wronging Sheldon Caldwell. Since only four people had advanced from each of the previous squads, it was only natural to merge several adjacent ones. Vera’s and Susan’s original squads hadn’t been far from each other, so it was perfectly normal for them to end up in the same group.
