Chapter 667: Chapter 667: You and Your Big Mouth (3)
"Would it matter if I disagreed?" Lane Yancey asked, smiling.
"Of course not." Sheldon Caldwell winked at him. "Because I’m the chief instructor."
Lane Yancey burst out laughing. "Your personality is exactly like your mother’s—just as direct, just as domineering."
Lane Yancey was actually one of Winter Sullivan’s high school classmates. At school, their friendship had been purely platonic; they respected each other but didn’t interact much, so they hadn’t kept in touch over the years.
But Sheldon Caldwell replied in all seriousness, "I’m doing this to prove what students from regular universities are capable of. With the right training, they can hold their own against military academy cadets. It also sends a message that if they’re willing, they too can join the military and serve their country."
Hearing this, Lane Yancey said with a note of admiration, "You’re right. Everyone needs some fire in their hearts. What you’re doing is a great thing. I support you."
Sheldon Caldwell had expected to have a hard time convincing Lane Yancey, but he hadn’t anticipated such willing cooperation. It almost felt anticlimactic.
After Sheldon Caldwell and Lane Yancey finalized their discussion, the difficulty of the military training was ramped up yet again.
Vera Xavier already thought the current difficulty was more than enough. When Sheldon Caldwell increased it again, she silently cursed him in her mind, ’What a sadist.’
He had originally just been tormenting Susan Caldwell, and now everyone had to suffer along with her.
Susan Caldwell was so worn out from the training that her back was sore, her muscles ached, and her legs were cramping. Unable to bear it any longer, she found Sheldon Caldwell during the lunch break. "Brother, I know I was wrong..."
"Shut up." Sheldon Caldwell cut her off, his face impassive and his eyes filled with a bone-chilling coldness. "Spare me, Susan Caldwell. If you were truly sorry, you’d be visiting Mom, not here pleading with me."
With that, he turned and walked away.
He was utterly disappointed in Susan Caldwell. At first, he’d thought her refusal to come back and help him care for Winter Sullivan was just a fit of anger. But several days had passed, and Susan had yet to ask about Winter Sullivan even once.
Through this incident, Sheldon Caldwell saw Susan’s cold-heartedness and her tendency to hold a grudge.
Susan Caldwell froze for a moment before asking, "Visit Mom? What’s wrong with her?"
All she knew was that Winter Sullivan might have been injured that day. But in her eyes, it was probably nothing more than a bump or a bruise. How serious could it be?
Besides, she had Julian Caldwell’s support now. She was incredibly resentful of Winter Sullivan, so she hadn’t bothered to ask about her condition.
Sheldon Caldwell’s eyes were like chips of ice as they met Susan’s. He truly couldn’t believe that she hadn’t even bothered to ask about Winter Sullivan’s injury. He’d assumed that even if she didn’t ask him, she would have surely asked Julian Caldwell. Now it seemed Susan hadn’t asked anyone at all.
As soon as Susan Caldwell saw his expression, she knew something was seriously wrong. She stammered, "I thought Mom was only lightly injured and would be fine in a couple of days. I’d already made her angry, and I was afraid seeing me would just upset her more..."
Sheldon Caldwell suddenly lost all desire to speak with her. He shot her a cold glare, then turned and walked away.
Susan Caldwell gritted her teeth as she watched him go. She was usually so good at keeping up appearances, never showing this side of herself to the Caldwell Family. But this time she had been so thoroughly provoked that her actions had been careless, exposing her true nature.
And she could only blame it all on Vera Xavier. If it weren’t for Vera, how could she have ended up in such a humiliating position!
