Chapter 643: Chapter 643: Mother-Daughter Instincts (5)
Vera Xavier’s gaze darkened. From the looks of it, Susan Caldwell had followed them here.
And that was indeed the case. Ever since Vera Xavier had arrived in Veridia, Susan Caldwell had been plotting her response. But she was terrified that Vera and Sheldon Caldwell would grow close before she could put her plans into action.
Susan Caldwell was keeping a close watch on Vera Xavier. She had even bribed a girl in the dorm room across from Vera’s, paying her to report any unusual activity immediately.
So, the moment Vera Xavier left her dorm today, the girl went to find Susan Caldwell.
Susan Caldwell immediately went after them. She saw Vera Xavier get into a car at the school gate—a car she recognized as belonging to the Caldwell Family. A knot of anxiety instantly tightened in her stomach. As soon as Vera and Sheldon Caldwell’s car drove away, she hailed a taxi and followed.
She felt a pang of nervousness when she saw Vera Xavier and Sheldon Caldwell enter the teahouse. But when she discovered that Winter Sullivan was also inside, her anxiety spiked.
’I regret acting against Vera so hastily,’ she thought. ’It seemed like the perfect opportunity, one I couldn’t pass up. But I forgot Sheldon Caldwell was still on campus, and I forgot that he and Vera knew each other.’
She frantically racked her brain for a way to salvage the situation, but nothing came to mind.
What she didn’t expect was that Sheldon Caldwell had spotted her long ago and was now calling her out.
Sheldon Caldwell smiled. "Susan, fancy seeing you here. Have you come for tea as well?"
Seeing Sheldon Caldwell’s beaming smile, Susan Caldwell knew she was in trouble. She forced a smile of her own. "No, I followed Vera Xavier."
She knew that Sheldon was not only a professional soldier but an expert in tracking and counter-tracking. Her clumsy attempt at following them was a joke. ’There’s no way I could have fooled him,’ she realized.
’Since I can’t hide it, I might as well admit it.’
It had to be said, Susan Caldwell was a remarkably quick-witted person.
Sheldon Caldwell looked at her and smiled. "Is that so?"
"Of course." A new strategy quickly formed in Susan Caldwell’s mind. "Do you like Vera Xavier? Are you trying to woo her?"
Sheldon Caldwell froze for a second. Susan nudged him lightly with her elbow. "You seemed to treat her differently during the military training! You’ve never dated anyone, and Mom and Dad are worried sick. Am I finally getting a sister-in-law?"
Sheldon Caldwell glared at her. "What nonsense are you talking about? Vera Xavier is Nathaniel Nathan’s girlfriend. I didn’t ask her out. Mom wanted to meet her."
Susan Caldwell’s hands clenched into fists. She was seething. ’So it really was Winter Sullivan!’
’I just don’t get it,’ she thought. ’For years, I’ve done everything I can to get on Winter Sullivan’s good side, but she’s always kept me at a distance. No matter what I tell her, she’s always skeptical and feels the need to verify it herself!’
Sheldon Caldwell glanced at her. Seeing her awful expression, his brow furrowed. He knew why Winter Sullivan wanted to see Susan, and for her to be this terrified... it suggested there was far more to the story.
Just then, Winter Sullivan opened the window. "Come on in, you two!"
Sheldon Caldwell shot Susan a warning look, a clear sign that she was on her own. She gritted her teeth and had no choice but to follow.
