Chapter 587: Chapter 587: Training Begins (3)
Shirley Ewing burst out laughing. "Right now, you’re the only one, so you have this problem. If everyone in our dorm got perfect scores on everything, we could take three-quarters of the attention off you!"
"That actually sounds pretty reasonable!" Vera said with a smile. "Then let’s give it a try next time!"
Fiona chimed in with a laugh, "You said it, so no take-backs!"
Vera smiled and agreed. Anyone who made it into Veridia University was the cream of the crop, and each of them had her own pride. The talk about cheating was just a joke; with their pride on the line, they would never actually do something like that.
As they were talking, the door was pushed open, and a tall girl walked in carrying a pile of clothes.
Fiona and Shirley both had the delicate features typical of southern girls, but this newcomer was a stark contrast. She was at least five-foot-seven, and her features weren’t delicate; in fact, she had a certain sharp, heroic air about her and a somewhat cold demeanor.
She glanced at Vera. Before Vera could say anything, Shirley had already made the introduction. "This is our last roommate, Vera Xavier."
Laura White simply said, "Oh," without another word. She unhurriedly placed her clothes on the drying rack on the balcony. When she was finished, she walked back over to Vera just as leisurely, held out a piece of paper, and said, "Sign this."
Vera froze for a second. Laura said coolly, "It’s a habit I picked up in high school. Whenever I meet someone with better grades than me, I have them give me their autograph."
"Why?" Vera asked. ’Her expression doesn’t exactly scream ’fan asking for an autograph,’’ she thought.
Sure enough, Laura lifted her chin slightly. "Because I’m going to beat you."
Vera laughed. "So, you asking for my signature is actually you throwing down the gauntlet?"
"Exactly," Laura replied bluntly.
Vera took the pen and paper and swiftly signed her name. "Challenge accepted."
Laura hadn’t expected her to sign so readily and gave her another look. Vera met her gaze with a smile.
Laura smiled too. "Looks like you’re pretty confident in yourself!"
"Not at all!" Vera said, throwing up her hands. "I just feel like getting a perfect score has brought me a lot of hassle. I’m actually hoping you can beat me and take some of this trouble off my hands."
Laura pursed her lips. "I don’t need anyone to go easy on me. So, Vera, you’d better bring everything you’ve got!"
With that said, she simply climbed onto her bed, picked up a book, and completely ignored Vera.
’This girl is a little intense,’ Vera thought, ’but she’s direct and honest. Being so upfront about wanting to win is a good quality. I like that.’
Fiona and Shirley, on the other hand, looked a little uncomfortable at the exchange. Shirley changed the subject, asking, "You already registered, so how come you’re just now getting to school?"
Vera answered, "Military training doesn’t start until tomorrow, so I’m not late for that. Why? Is something else going on?"
Shirley pouted. "Of course something’s going on! Someone stole your spot for the opening ceremony speech."
Vera was completely bewildered by this. Shirley explained, "I heard that you were originally supposed to be the one giving the speech as the new student representative. But even though you were registered, they couldn’t find you anywhere. The school administrators have even come by the dorm looking for you several times in the past few days."
