Chapter 572: Chapter 572: Pillow Talk (6)
Beckett Nathan suddenly had a better understanding of why Nathaniel Nathan was so fond of Vera Xavier. Aside from her humble origins, the young woman was outstanding in every other respect; she was nothing like someone from the countryside.
The dinner was a pleasant affair for everyone involved. By the time it was over, it was already past eight in the evening. As it was getting late, Beckett Nathan told Nathaniel Nathan to take Vera Xavier home.
Vera Xavier politely said to Beckett Nathan and Brooke Mitchell, "Mr. Nathan, Ms. Mitchell, thank you for your hospitality tonight. Goodbye!"
Since Brooke Mitchell remained silent, Beckett Nathan offered a polite invitation. "Xavier, feel free to come over and visit whenever you have the time."
The moment he said this, Brooke Mitchell shot him a glare. The words were already out, so he couldn’t take them back. He simply smiled and gestured for Vera Xavier to head out.
Vera Xavier’s lip twitched as she witnessed their little exchange. ’So the great and powerful minister is actually henpecked,’ she thought. ’What a surprise!’
And there had been many other surprises that day.
Although Brooke Mitchell hadn’t voiced any objections during the visit, Vera could tell the woman didn’t like her. While that dislike was certainly fueled by Susan Caldwell’s provocations earlier, it stemmed more from Brooke Mitchell’s own values.
Vera Xavier wasn’t against the idea of being "well-matched." It was true that two people from vastly different backgrounds would need a long and often painful period of adjustment to be together.
She just felt that Brooke Mitchell placed too much importance on it. And since Vera carried the label of a "country girl," it was only natural that Brooke Mitchell would look down on her.
Although Vera felt that her true identity made her a perfect match for the Nathan Family, she couldn’t reveal it just yet. Therefore, she had to find other ways to show Brooke Mitchell that she was worthy of Nathaniel Nathan.
Brooke Mitchell was a painter, and her invitation for Vera to paint with her had been a deliberate attempt to humiliate her. Of course, Vera wasn’t going to give her that chance. She had never formally studied painting, but she could write beautiful calligraphy and possessed her own unique aesthetic philosophy.
Today was the first time in this life or her last that she had ever seriously tried to paint, and she discovered she actually had a talent for it.
Brooke Mitchell looked down on her origins, which, at the end of the day, just meant she didn’t think Vera was worthy of Nathaniel Nathan.
Since their mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship couldn’t be reconciled anytime soon, she would just have to prove herself to Brooke Mitchell in her own way: she was exceptional—exceptional enough to deserve the very best, Nathaniel Nathan.
The painting was just one skill Vera Xavier had revealed to Brooke Mitchell today. In the future, if Brooke Mitchell refrained from putting her to the test, then all would be well. But if she continued to challenge her, Vera would use her undeniable abilities to shut her up, just as she had today.
As the two were heading out the door, Brooke Mitchell called after them, "Nathaniel, don’t be too late coming back."
Her meaning was clear: she didn’t want Nathaniel Nathan spending the night with Vera Xavier.
Vera Xavier sighed to herself. ’Looks like winning over my future mother-in-law won’t be easy.’
Nathaniel Nathan, however, remained as expressionless as ever, neither agreeing nor refusing.
The moment they left, Brooke Mitchell shut the door.
Beckett Nathan could no longer hold back. "They’re gone now," he said. "Can you please tell me what that was all about today?"
Brooke Mitchell bit her lip. "That Vera Xavier is just too arrogant!"
"What did she do to you?" Beckett Nathan asked, surprised.
