Vera Xavier pouted slightly and said, "If you come out of my room like that, I’ll be too embarrassed to face anyone ever again!"
When Nathaniel Nathan heard Vera Xavier’s words, he chuckled softly. She glared at him. He looked at her, braced his hand against the wall behind her, and said pointedly, "So, the only reason you’ve been so well-behaved this morning is that you thought I came straight out of your room?"
Vera Xavier froze for a second before asking a foolish question. "You mean you didn’t?"
The smile on Nathaniel Nathan’s lips widened. "That’s a pretty good idea. I’ll have to try it next time. It might have some unexpected results."
It finally dawned on Vera Xavier. She glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already past ten. Then, she noticed a pile of gifts in the corner and instantly understood. He had walked right in through the front door.
’It was her own guilty conscience—because he’d slept in her bed last night—that made her assume he had just walked out of her room.’
’She figured Nathaniel Nathan could tease her about this for a whole year!’
Her face flushed red. She cleared her throat and said, "There’s no need to try that. Grandma would skin me alive."
When she finished speaking, she tried to push him away, but why would he let her go so easily? He just looked at her and said, "The old rule."
This time, it took Vera Xavier a full three seconds to realize what he meant by "the old rule." Her eyes darted around the house to make sure no one else was there before she stood on her tiptoes and quickly kissed him on the lips.
The corners of his lips curved up, and the smile in his eyes looked like it was about to overflow.
Vera Xavier stared at him, dumbfounded. He was always so aloof; it was rare to see him in such a good mood, wearing a smile like that. It was like the sun appearing after a long snowstorm—a unique kind of beauty that emerges once the ice has melted. It wasn’t dazzling, but it was exceptionally captivating. She was completely mesmerized.
But Nathaniel Nathan had already taken her by the hand. "Let’s go," he said. "I’ll take you to see the plots of land so you can pick one you like."
It was only as he was pulling her out the door that Vera Xavier remembered. Last night, he’d said he had already found several potential sites for her pharmaceutical factory and that he’d let her choose one herself.
She finally, belatedly, understood. He hadn’t just snuck out of her room; he had come over early this morning, brought gifts for the Preston Family, and was simply here to fulfill his promise to take her to see the land for her factory.
’It was just that she had jumped to conclusions and twisted the whole situation in her mind...’
’Vera Xavier sincerely felt that she hadn’t been this embarrassed in two lifetimes combined.’
Just as the two of them were walking out, they happened to run into Grandma Dixon, who was watering her plants.
As soon as Grandma Dixon saw them, she greeted them with a smile, her eyes filled with amusement.
Vera Xavier then belatedly realized he was still holding her hand. She cleared her throat and tried to pull her hand away. After all, in this day and age, it still wasn’t entirely acceptable for a man and a woman to be holding hands so openly in public.
Nathaniel Nathan didn’t make things difficult for her. ’His girl was shy; he had to give her some time to get used to it.’ So, he let go of her hand.
But there were already plenty of rumors about him and Vera Xavier spreading through the residential compound. Even though they weren’t holding hands now, they were still walking side-by-side. On top of that, the usually aloof Nathaniel Nathan was wearing a gentle expression. What more was there to misunderstand?
And so, as they made their way out, people kept greeting Vera Xavier, each one with a knowing, teasing smile.
Vera Xavier, of course, knew exactly what they were thinking. She could only brace herself and return the greetings from her neighbors in the compound.
