The two were so close that when Vera spoke, her lips brushed against Nathaniel’s. The warm, soft touch was as gentle and alluring as a flower petal. He wanted to kiss her again, but she reached out and covered his mouth.
He had grown to absolutely love this feeling of being so close to her. It stirred a tantalizing itch within him, and he simply couldn’t get enough.
Nathaniel raised an eyebrow. Vera said softly, "You’re bleeding."
She had been angry earlier, and in the heat of the moment, she’d bitten down a little too hard, breaking the skin on his lip.
Nathaniel didn’t mind continuing to kiss her, but she clearly did, so he would make a small sacrifice and respect her wishes.
After he sat up, Vera used a cotton swab to wipe the blood from his lip. The wound wasn’t large, but its location was a bit awkward and still quite noticeable.
Afraid he might say the wrong thing, she coaxed him, "If anyone asks how you hurt your lip, just tell them you bit it by accident, okay?"
Nathaniel was in a good mood, so he was very agreeable and nodded. ’It was a small thing. All that mattered was that she was happy.’
With that, matters on their end were more or less settled. Vera packed her things, preparing to set off on her herb-gathering trip.
Once their things were packed, the group checked out of their rooms together. They found a breakfast shop to eat at, and upon entering, they discovered that Alistair Forrest, Susan Caldwell, and their group were all inside.
Their running into each other wasn’t really a surprise. There were only two breakfast shops on the entire street; the other one was at the far end and less convenient.
With the different groups colliding, the atmosphere instantly grew somewhat awkward.
Alistair Forrest blinked, deciding to play the part of the handsome, silent observer. ’After all, with Nathaniel by her side, Vera won’t be at a disadvantage.’
Susan Caldwell’s expression soured. She turned and urged Irene Jensen, "Hurry up. The car will be here any minute."
’This time, everything had spun completely out of my control, leaving me more humiliated than ever before. It took a huge effort to get myself out of this situation.’
Furthermore, she had been reported for impersonating the daughter of the Minister of Commerce. To prove she wasn’t a fraud, her only option had been to provide Mr. Caldwell’s number for the police to perform a verification.
Because of this, the police had truthfully recounted how she had injured the vendor and acted with extreme arrogance and irrationality. They only sought to verify her identity after explaining the situation. As a result, everything she had done was laid bare before Mr. Caldwell.
Mr. Caldwell was furious when he heard what she had done. He felt that wasn’t something Susan would do, but the police provided solid, irrefutable evidence, leaving him no choice but to believe it.
However, Mr. Caldwell had always doted on Susan, so he couldn’t possibly leave her to deal with this alone. He had official documents sent over to verify her identity. He then personally called the victim’s family to apologize. In addition to covering all medical expenses, he paid a sum in compensation, which finally brought the matter to a close.
It was only early this morning that Susan Caldwell and her group had been released from the police station.
’I know Dad must be furious and deeply disappointed,’ she thought. ’My usual tricks for winning him over probably won’t work this time.’ She was racking her brain, trying to figure out how to appease him and protect her standing in his eyes.
She still hadn’t figured out a solution when she ran into Vera, which only fueled her irritation.
Jack Judd was a real piece of work. When he saw her, he said with a jeering smile, "Well, well, if it isn’t the daughter of the Minister of Commerce? How did you get out of the police station so soon?"
