He had been hit with one blow after another all morning. It was just too brutal!
He took a deep breath. "Grandfather, don’t look down on me. If I can’t marry Vera Xavier this time, I’m not coming home!"
He hung up as soon as he finished speaking. Hearing the dial tone, Master Forrest chuckled softly. "That impetuous, easily provoked boy. This will be a good chance for you to learn a lesson."
While Nathaniel Nathan and Vera Xavier were playing cards all night, Scott Sullivan, Shannon Quinn, and the rest of the Phantom Unit were driving back to their base. Their mission had been a perfect success, but it had taken a little longer than expected.
After he called his superior last night to report the situation, he was ordered to return to the unit immediately.
Mustering his courage, he cautiously mentioned that Nathaniel Nathan was staying behind to continue investigating the drug traffickers. He had expected the Commander to chew Nathaniel out, but to his surprise, the Commander said, "Direwolf is always bold yet meticulous. With him over there, I can rest easy."
Scott Sullivan thought about how even though he hadn’t been reprimanded while reporting on the mission, the Commander’s tone had been anything but friendly. Yet, the moment Nathaniel Nathan was mentioned, the Commander’s voice had become as gentle as a spring breeze. ’This blatant favoritism really hurts the hearts of us subordinates!’
He couldn’t help but wonder: if the Commander knew Nathaniel Nathan hadn’t stayed behind to track down any drug traffickers at all, but was instead keeping his wife company, would the man fly into a rage?
Shannon Quinn had been criticized because his sloppy reconnaissance the night before had nearly caused a disaster. He now sat there like a frost-bitten eggplant.
Heath Wright held it in for a long time before he couldn’t resist asking Scott Sullivan, "Are there really still drug traffickers that haven’t been caught? Can Direwolf handle it all by himself? Should we ask our superior if we can leave someone behind to help him?"
"You’re probably the only one honest enough to believe him." Scott Sullivan chuckled. "He’s on another level. Who could possibly hurt him?"
"True," Heath Wright nodded.
But Scott Sullivan added with another laugh, "Actually, there is someone in this world who can hurt him. Don’t be fooled by how formidable he is with us. In front of his wife, he’s a total pushover."
"Direwolf’s wife?" Shannon Quinn, who had been silent, piped up with interest. "Was she at the Jade Market last night too?"
"Yep, she was. It nearly scared Direwolf to death. His wife is a formidable person in her own right. In a situation like last night’s, she actually dared to use herself as bait to lure Trent Thornton into the sniper’s kill zone. That kind of guts... she’s a real match for Direwolf." Recalling the events of last night, Scott Sullivan found it amusing.
He had never seen Nathaniel Nathan so nervous.
Shannon Quinn hadn’t been inside when Nathaniel Nathan took out Trent Thornton yesterday; he was providing backup outside, so he never saw Vera Xavier. He asked curiously, "What does Direwolf’s wife look like? I remember there were two women inside last night. Which one was she?"
"The beautiful one," Scott Sullivan replied.
Shannon Quinn was a little regretful. "Things were too hectic during the mission yesterday, I didn’t get a good look. I’m just so curious what kind of woman could tame that monster, Direwolf."
Heath Wright chimed in from the side, "I saw Direwolf’s wife yesterday. She’s not just pretty, she’s gorgeous!"
"Is she prettier than our unit’s beauty queen?" Shannon Quinn asked curiously.
