But it just didn’t happen, and even Madam Li had asked a few times.
She was worried that something might be wrong with Cuihua and Lai Jinhai’s health and secretly had Zhao Xi check them both.
Zhao Xi said there were no issues; both were very healthy, but perhaps it’s just not the right time.
Madam Li trusted Zhao Xi’s medical skill and felt at ease upon hearing this, reasoning that if it wasn’t meant to be, one child was enough.
As it turned out, just two months ago, when Cuihua accompanied Madam Li to bring things to Lanhua, the smell of fish suddenly made her nauseous.
No sooner had she started throwing up, than Lanhua did too.
Madam Li was terrified, thinking the fish might be toxic. But when Old Doctor Zhao was called over to take a look, it turned out both were pregnant. Even Old Doctor Zhao remarked on the sisters’ synchronicity, as the pregnancies were very close in timing.
Madam Li was overjoyed and kept thanking the ancestors for their blessings.
But with two daughters both pregnant, Madam Li couldn’t fully attend to both.
Cuihua spoke up, "I’ve already had one child, so I have experience. Jinhai and Yuanyuan can help me with anything. Worst case, my mother-in-law can come over. Lanhua doesn’t have a mother-in-law and it’s her first pregnancy, so she doesn’t know many things. Mother, you should take good care of Lanhua."
Madam Li considering this was sensible, stayed at the Yu family seeing Lanhua’s simple-minded reaction to her pregnancy.
However, even while caring for Lanhua, she couldn’t help but worry about Cuihua.
Especially after her family’s young nephew’s wife, who hadn’t even come of age, had a miscarriage. She frequently suspected that the reason Cuihua hadn’t conceived all these years might be related to getting pregnant and giving birth immediately after marriage back then.
She would occasionally visit Cuihua, finding Cuihua’s reactions harsh, especially compared to Lanhua’s hearty appetite; Cuihua indeed was suffering.
Given the circumstances, Lai Jinhai had no choice but to have his own mother come over.
Mother Lai had long wanted to stay in the county town. The house at home was small, with many children, making it quite cramped and vexing for her. Coming to the county town was ostensibly to care for Cuihua, but it was actually a relief for herself.
With Mother Lai’s help, at least Cuihua didn’t have to worry about meals.
But on one occasion when Madam Li brought things for Cuihua, she found that Mother Lai had brought over two children from home, claiming they were to learn reading and writing with their cousin Yuanyuan.
This would be fine, but the problem was that the two children were quite mischievous, running around the house, making Yuanyuan sweat profusely trying to manage them, not to mention disrupting his own studies and disturbing Cuihua’s rest.
Madam Li was furious on the spot, storming in to have a major argument with Mother Lai.
She even called Lai Jinhai back from the shop to scold him harshly. Lai Jinhai was completely unaware of this; the children had arrived while he was out working, brought over by their mother who had come to the county town market, temporarily leaving them in the Lai family’s care.
Madam Li didn’t care whether he knew or not, suspecting reasonably that this was a deliberate test by the Lai family, and if the two children managed to settle in, anyone from the Lai family might stay in the future.
This was not without precedent, after all, in the past few years, Lai Jinhai’s parents had tried several times to move to the county town with him.
Lai Jinhai had managed to refuse them each time for various reasons.
Madam Li saw this as highly likely and demanded right there that Lai Jinhai send Mother Lai back home.
