Mo Youfu had someone follow Liu Fengying to see who she was selling the herbs to. The trail led all the way to Wancheng, where they were surprised to find Tang Yaxuan! It turned out that the dozen or so burlap sacks of herbs Liu Fengying had brought were for Tang Yaxuan. She was with two soldiers, who loaded the herbs directly into a car and drove away.
Upon hearing this news, Yu Wumei, who managed the household, suddenly grew flustered. Looking utterly remorseful, she confessed to Grandpa and Grandma: She had unintentionally done something wrong. She had heard that Liu Fengying’s children were either disabled or sick, and that Mo Laoer’s young daughter was frail and difficult to care for after accidentally falling into a pond. So when they came to the herb garden asking for a few herbs, Yu Wumei, being a mother herself, felt a moment of pity and agreed. She was busy with a task at the time, so she let them go in and find the herbs they needed on their own. When she remembered and went back to check half an hour later, the three adults—Mo Laoer, Second Aunt Mo, and Liu Fengying—were already gone. She had no idea how many herbs they took! Thinking it was a minor issue, she hadn’t mentioned it to the family.
After hearing this, Grandpa felt it wasn’t his place to scold his daughter-in-law. Mo Jiabao, however, immediately berated Yu Wumei until she was in tears. To keep the peace, Grandma could only intervene and stop him. Crying, Yu Wumei sobbed that she would never be so quick to trust anyone again.
But that batch of herbs had already been taken by Tang Yaxuan. Grandpa wondered what she intended to use them for. Could she be trying to imitate the Sun Group’s pharmaceutical business to make money? He then remembered that Gu Shao Feng had stayed in Gongdao Village for a few days, supposedly to prevent people from stealing herbs. The seedlings in their garden had been sourced by Xiao Man and Tang Qingshan and were rare varieties. Tang Qingshan had even explicitly stated that they were only to be sold to the Sun Group. Now, Tang Yaxuan had taken at least three burlap sacks, which might have included newly cultivated seedlings. Grandpa felt he had to tell Xiao Man about this.
After Xiao Man finished her story, she added to Grandpa Tang, "Tang Yaxuan’s trip to G Province was planned by Bai Junfan. I personally heard her cheering about how she was going to fly to G Province with her Brother Junfan!"
"That’s why Tang Yaxuan showed up in Wancheng. The Bai Family must have paid for it. Tang Yaxuan contacted Liu Fengying—and no matter how bad Liu Fengying’s reputation is, she’s still from Gongdao Village. Grandpa Tang frowned and stood up, intending to go to the upstairs study to make a call. However, his path was blocked by Tang Qingyun’s long legs, and he flew into a rage, scolding him harshly, "Look what a fine mess you’ve made! Abandoning your own flesh and blood, only to raise an ungrateful wretch! She can’t wait to defect to the Bai Family—she’d probably be happy to destroy you, her adoptive father, to get there!"
Tang Qingyun scrambled to his feet, held his breath, and stood ramrod straight to one side.
Grandma Tang was also furious, but seeing her youngest son’s awkward predicament made her heart ache for him. "It’s all that Wu Xiaowen’s fault," she said. "What good could possibly come from the Wu Family? The fish rots from the head down!"
After Grandpa Tang went upstairs, Tang Qingyun breathed a sigh of relief. He said to Grandma Tang, "Mom, I’m heading out for a bit. I’ll be back soon."
He leaned over to grab an apple from the fruit bowl on the table and patted Xiao Man on the head. "Be a good girl and stay home with Grandma, okay? I’ll be back to have lunch with you both."
Xiao Man pursed her lips. ’It’d be better if you didn’t come back. Who wants you here?’
Tang Qingyun drove straight to the hospital where Wu Yu Xuan was receiving treatment. He’d heard Wu Xiaowen say last night that she was having Xuanxuan come over today to keep her maternal grandfather company and read to him.
Yesterday, Wu Xiaowen and Lin Aizhen had gone to the Medical College looking for Xiao Man. They didn’t just want Xiao Man to treat Wu Yu Xuan; they also wanted her to stay at the hospital and look after him. They went on about how her grandpa cherished and doted on this granddaughter the most and thought of her constantly. Now that he was injured, they argued, Xiao Man ought to be by his side. If her grandpa was in a better mood, he would naturally be in less pain and would recover even faster.
At the time, Tang Qingyun didn’t even know if Xiao Man was at the school, but thinking of his mother’s and Manman’s attitudes, he flatly refused Lin Aizhen and Wu Xiaowen and told them to stop dreaming.
Wu Xiaowen immediately burst into tears and started clinging to Tang Qingyun, making a scene. He bundled the mother-daughter pair into their car and sent them directly to the hospital where Wu Yu Xuan was being treated.
By now, he was utterly disgusted with the entire Wu Family. The only exception was Wu Yu Xuan, whom he felt compelled to respect, if only for his profound knowledge.
The tongue-lashing from his father reminded Tang Qingyun of something. ’I told Wu Xiaowen to change Tang Yaxuan’s surname, but she completely ignored me. Fine. I’ll handle it myself. I’ll change her given name, too. She’s forbidden from using it ever again.’
