Chapter 539: Chapter 467: What Are You Trying to Do (Part 2)
Today, she knew. All of it had really happened!
She and Brother Junfan had once been husband and wife. They say even one day as a couple forges a bond of a hundred days, and they had been married for a whole lifetime! To meet again in this life had to be fate!
Tang Yaxuan felt a surge of confidence, psyching herself up. ’Now I finally get it. I understand why Yang Liu’er hates me so much, why she attacks and curses me on sight like a common shrew. It turns out she had a dream about Bai Junfan, too, and she must have seen me in it, right? Hah! Well, in that case, she should know that *I* am Brother Junfan’s lawfully wedded wife! And what is Yang Liu’er? Nothing but a mistress, the other woman, deluding herself into thinking she can steal my Brother Junfan away!’
’She should take a good look at herself. What’s her status compared to mine? Does she really think she can steal him from me? It’s pure delusion!’
’And she has the gall to come here and take her anger out on me, just because she’s a few years older and has some brute strength? She doesn’t have a single logical argument on her side!’
Tang Yaxuan thought hatefully, ’From now on, I need to grow up faster. I’ll find an excuse to get Mom to let me sign up for the amateur martial arts team at the sports college with Wang Xia from downstairs. I’ll learn a few moves. The next time Yang Liu’er dares to cross me, I’ll beat her black and blue. Better yet, I’ll ruin that pretty face of hers and see if she can still play the vixen then!’
Tang Yaxuan bit her lip, a cold glint flashing in her dark eyes as her chest heaved. She despised women like Yang Liu’er. ’They have no real substance or proper upbringing, relying only on their vixen-like faces to ensnare men. Brother Junfan has fallen for her trap. I have to help him. Sooner or later, I’ll rip off her deceptive mask and expose her ugly true colors!’
In the alley outside the courtyard gate, Bai Junfan trailed beside Yang Liu’er, speaking in a low, gentle voice. Yang Liu’er, however, paid him no mind at all. As she walked, she cheerfully greeted the neighbors coming and going, her tone warm and her smile so friendly and natural it was as if nothing had just happened.
A cheerful, plump woman in her fifties came walking toward them. It was Granny Jin, the very person who had sold the small courtyard to Yang Liu’er. She still lived in another courtyard in the same alley. She was carrying a small basket holding a full enamel mug of bean milk and a few fried dough sticks. She smiled, glanced at Bai Junfan, and whispered to Yang Liu’er, "Little Yang, you’re up so early! Where are you two lovebirds off to?"
Yang Liu’er froze. When she bought the courtyard, she had told the Jin Family it was going to be her marital home. She’d explained that her fiancé worked far away, so they hadn’t been able to hold the wedding ceremony yet. The first time Granny Jin had seen her with Bai Junfan, Yang Liu’er had readily admitted that he was her fiancé. Granny Jin had been very understanding, promising to keep their secret and even offering to help with the wedding preparations as an elder when the time came. But now, with things as they were, Yang Liu’er’s heart was heavy. She felt utterly hopeless and didn’t want the kind-hearted Granny Jin to hold onto false expectations.
So she smiled at Granny Jin and lied through her teeth. "Granny, I think your eyes are playing tricks on you. This isn’t my fiancé. My fiancé is much taller and more built than him. This is my... my distant nephew!"
’Well, he *is* my nephew, isn’t he?’
Shun Ma’s surname was Yang, and she was Yang Liu’er’s paternal aunt. No matter how much the Bai Family denied it, Shun Ma was Bai Lihua’s birth mother. According to the family tree, that meant Yang Liu’er was supposed to call Bai Lihua ’cousin,’ which made Bai Junfan a member of the junior generation—her nephew.
Bai Junfan’s face darkened. It wasn’t just because he’d inexplicably been demoted to ’nephew.’ Yang Liu’er usually delighted in letting everyone know they were an engaged couple. He’d even worried her openness might cause complications for him down the line. But now that she was suddenly denying he was her fiancé, he found he was deeply unsettled.
Granny Jin was completely baffled. She kept glancing back over her shoulder as she walked away, muttering to herself, "How could that not be him? I’ve seen him two or three times, how could I get it wrong? It’s definitely the same face... Are my eyes failing me today?"
The pair walking away heard Granny Jin’s muttering. Yang Liu’er remained expressionless. Bai Junfan reached for her hand, but she shook him off. Suppressing his frustration, Bai Junfan continued trying to soothe and persuade her, but Yang Liu’er wouldn’t give him the time of day. She walked faster and faster, desperate to put some distance between them. But Bai Junfan kept following her, creating a scene that looked for all the world like a beautiful woman being harassed by a scoundrel. If it weren’t for Bai Junfan’s handsome features and dignified air—a far cry from a common hooligan—someone would have likely stepped in to ask Yang Liu’er if she needed help. Even so, their strange procession drew many stares by the time they left the alley and reached the bus stop on the main road.
