Chapter 162: The Effort Paid Off
Chapter 162: Chapter 162: The Effort Paid Off
In the end, Lin Jingjing won the game, just a step ahead of her opponent.
Seeing the word "Victory" on her screen, Lin Jingjing lit up with joy.
She didn’t forget to taunt her opponent.
[Call me Grandpa. Hurry up.]
Jian Xing fell silent. ’I can’t believe I lost.’
Seeing this, Guan Shan Nian, who was standing beside him, started to freak out.
"Fuck, how did you lose too? Are they really that good?" Guan Shan Nian paced back and forth anxiously.
This was the first time he’d ever taunted someone only to be taunted back.
"Jian Xing, you have to win this back for me!" Guan Shan Nian directly ordered the man sitting in front of him.
Jian Xing shook his head. The match was already lost.
’Why humiliate myself further?’
"It’s meaningless now," Jian Xing said, shaking his head.
"But you were so close to winning!" Guan Shan Nian said frantically. "You were so close!"
Jian Xing looked at the young master and sighed softly.
’In a game, being "so close" doesn’t mean you almost won. It just means your opponent is stronger than you are.’
They hadn’t muted their mics, so Lin Jingjing heard their entire conversation clearly.
Lin Jingjing was the type to hold a grudge, and she was very displeased with Guan Shan Nian’s attitude.
’I have to taunt them back.’
[Noob. A loss is a loss.]
When Guan Shan Nian saw the word "noob" again, he flew into a rage and started cursing, "Who are you calling a noob? Who?!"
"I’m not a noob! You’re just too good!"
"I’m in the top one hundred on the Capital Star rankings!"
Lin Jingjing was speechless. ’What’s there to brag about?’
"Where are you on Capital Star? Let’s fight in person!" Guan Shan Nian shouted.
[In a few days, we can fight in person. You still won’t be able to beat me.]
"I can’t beat you? Eat shit!" Guan Shan Nian shot back, unconvinced.
Feng He couldn’t help but chuckle at that. "This guy is certainly persistent."
"You should go meet him when the time comes."
Lin Jingjing giggled. "You think I’ll scare him?"
Jian Xing exited the game lobby, handed the terminal back to Guan Shan Nian, and patted his shoulder. "Young Master," he said earnestly, "you really need to work on that temper of yours."
"Learn from the Master and Madam. Try to be calmer, more stable, and less impulsive."
"Or you could learn from the Young Lord and Young Miss," Jian Xing suggested seriously. "They handle matters with composure and don’t lose their temper over nothing."
But Guan Shan Nian was lying on the sofa. He picked up a piece of fruit from the coffee table and started eating, completely ignoring Jian Xing’s suggestion.
"Mind your own business. It’s not like they care about me anyway," Guan Shan Nian retorted with a scoff. "Besides, you’re my butler now. You’re not allowed to talk about them."
Jian Xing looked at the young master before him and sighed softly. It had been two years since he was brought back from F01 Star.
He’d heard the young master was raised on a farm, where his greatest joy after waking up each day was racing the farm’s horses.
That, or herding sheep. He hadn’t had many years of formal education, and his ability to learn was relatively low.
For some reason, his temper had grown more and more explosive. He’d smashed one drinking glass after another.
Mr. Guan and his wife had also grown to dislike him more and more. If Guan Shan Nian didn’t share their blood...
...and if the Guan family weren’t so lacking in heirs, they never would have brought someone like him back.
Hearing Jian Xing’s sigh, Guan Shan Nian looked up from the blue screen and said calmly, "If you feel it’s beneath you to serve me here, you can go back to the main residence."
"I have robots here anyway. You don’t have to stay."
Guan Shan Nian was completely serious. The moment Jian Xing agreed, he would immediately call that couple and have them take the man back.
Jian Xing shook his head. "I’m not thinking of going back. I just want you to try and change."
"The Master and Madam are very displeased with you."
Guan Shan Nian was unfazed. "What does that have to do with me? If they don’t like me, they can just let me go back to F01 Star. It’s not like I’m dying to stay here on Capital Star."
He couldn’t be persuaded. Jian Xing could only give up.
’The young master is truly stubborn, living only in his own world.’
After the door to the room was closed, Guan Shan Nian scoffed twice.
’As if I enjoy being part of the Guan family. A bunch of people who can’t stand me... I’m not even happy to be here.’
’If those idiots weren’t watching me and stopping me from running back to F01 Star, I would’ve been gone a year ago.’
’And I’m not even allowed to throw a tantrum?’
「 」
The next day, all the members of the First Corps woke up early. After getting ready, they entered the grand assembly hall.
Dressed in their smart uniforms, they walked toward the assembly hall in twos and threes.
Lin Jingjing and her friends strolled toward the hall, breakfast in hand.
The weather was beautiful today. The snow had stopped, the sun was high in the sky, and its rays felt wonderfully warm.
"The weather is great today," Lin Jingjing said with a smile, munching on her bread as she looked at the sun.
"Yeah, it’s not snowing anymore," Feng He agreed.
The group entered the assembly hall and sat in their usual spot, closest to the door, so they could make a quick exit when it was over.
The assembly began soon after. The seats on the stage filled up one by one. After some bigwig or another gave the opening remarks, they let Yun Yiyou speak.
It was the same old meaningless drivel. The group couldn’t stop yawning.
’So boring.’
’I want to get out of here.’
As the leaders spoke, the group secretly played on their Star Rings with their heads down. They had shrunk the large blue screens into small panels in their hands.
Reading novels, watching videos, chatting, checking the news, scrolling through posts on the Star Network.
Everyone was busy with their own thing.
When Beisang called out their names, the five of them looked around, completely bewildered.
It wasn’t until they noticed everyone’s eyes on them that Lin Jingjing’s group of five realized they were the ones being called.
"Are they calling us?" Shi Feng whispered.
Gu Kaiwen: "I think so."
"So, should we stand up?"
When their names were called, they would always stand up instinctively.
"Let’s stand," Lin Jingjing said.
One by one, they stood up, turning off their Star Rings.
Seeing them finally get to their feet, Beisang breathed a sigh of relief. ’Thank goodness they’re cooperating.’
"Will the five of you please come to the stage."
The five of them walked onto the stage one by one and stood in a line on the vast platform.
Looking at the huge crowd below, they immediately started to feel awkward and nervous.
’When will this be over?’
Just then, a robot approached them carrying medals, while Beisang recited their accomplishments.
Then, they were awarded their new ranks and medals.
Hearing that the rank was Senior Colonel, they were all shocked.
’We got promoted this quickly?’
Looking at the medals pinned to their chests, the group was overjoyed.
’We got promoted!’
’Our work wasn’t for nothing!’
After the medals were awarded, the five of them returned to their seats. They couldn’t help themselves, occasionally glancing down at the medals on their left chests.
’So shiny.’
