Chapter 375: Confession
Chapter 375: Chapter 375: Confession
Su Qing paused at his words. It was a question she hadn’t really considered. She had money and property; she could easily just coast by as a wealthy layabout if she wanted.
In her previous life, she wouldn’t have even dared to dream of such a comfortable existence. If she hadn’t listened to her family and gone to college for the heck of it, she’d probably be off traveling the world right now.
"Director Zhou, it’s a little early for me to think about that," Su Qing said to Zhou Chengbing with a smile.
Zhou Chengbing smiled back. "That’s true. It is a bit early. You’re just a college freshman now."
After a moment’s thought, Zhou Chengbing smiled again. "Little Su, I hear you have some impressive fighting skills. I was wondering, when you have the time, would you be interested in helping us out with a case or two?"
Zhou Chengbing’s thinking was simple. He wasn’t sure if Su Qing was interested in joining the police force yet, but he could use her nominal position at the bureau as an opportunity to expose her to some cases. Perhaps after a few encounters, the young woman would develop an interest.
After all, he believed Su Qing had a strong sense of justice. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have braved the dangers to uncover the criminals’ hideout, then led people into the mountains to round them all up at once.
Su Qing considered it for a moment. She did have a nominal position with the bureau, after all. "Director Zhou," she said with a smile, "if I have the time, I’d be happy to get involved with some cases."
"Oh, that’s wonderful!" Zhou Chengbing was overjoyed. "I’ll have someone get in touch with you the next time a case comes up."
"Alright."
While Su Qing and Zhou Chengbing were having a pleasant chat in the office, Xu Xianhui finally cracked under the pressure and told them everything she knew.
"Reporting!"
The call came from Zou Ming, just outside the office door.
"Enter."
At Zhou Chengbing’s word, Zou Ming opened the door and walked into the office, his gaze immediately falling on Su Qing.
Su Qing asked, "Captain Zou, did Xu Xianhui talk?"
"What other case is this Xu Xianhui involved in?" Zhou Chengbing asked. He was also keeping an eye on Xu Xianhui’s case, after all, since it was connected to Su Qing.
"Director Zhou, it’s about my father," Su Qing said, not intending to hide anything. "A few years ago, my father died in the mountains. Everyone thought it was an accident, but Xu Xianhui just said there’s more to the story."
"Oh?" Zhou Chengbing hadn’t expected Su Qing’s father to be involved. He looked at Zou Ming and asked, "What’s the situation?"
Zou Ming explained, "According to Xu Xianhui, right before Su Qing’s father went into the mountains, she happened to overhear two people talking in the woods. They said they were going to use the trip as an opportunity to kill him. She got scared and ran away, and she never dared to tell anyone what she’d heard."
Zou Ming then turned to Su Qing and added, "She only remembered it after she was brought in this time. She was planning to trade this information with you in exchange for a letter of forgiveness."
"Hmph. In her dreams," Su Qing scoffed. She suddenly recalled that only two people had returned from that trip alive. "Captain Zou, does Xu Xianhui know who those two were?" she asked urgently. "To be honest, when my father had his accident in the mountains, five people went in, but only two came back out."
"What a coincidence!" Zou Ming frowned. "Xu Xianhui gave us their names: one was Hu Laosan, and the other was Du Xiangbao."
"Hu Laosan and Du Xiangbao?" Su Qing took a deep breath. "Of the two bodies found in the mountains back then, one of them was Hu Laosan. That Du Xiangbao made it back alive, but I heard he left the village not long after."
"In that case," Zou Ming said, "it’s highly likely that Du Xiangbao fled out of guilt."
