Book 4, Chapter 88: Water Deity
The assistant stood in front of Yang Ling in her office. She bowed to Yang Ling before handing over an interpreted telegram from the headquarters.
“Jibei Road’s government might have already sent their men to search for the artifact, so United Might has to go to the merged space as well. The headquarters wants us to start the backup plan before the second group comes. We are to take action first with you heading the operation.”
Yang Ling took the telegram and read it. “We’ll need a lot of nutritional fluid for the backup plan. Do we have enough in stock?”
“We’ve prepared it beforehand. Even though the Resolution Department tightened the control over nutritional fluid and used it as an excuse to confiscate part of our stock, they took the portion we prepared to deal with such investigations. The company has given us enough stock for our operation.”
The assistant stared at Yang Ling, as if she was waiting for her to give confirmation.
“I’ll do as planned,” Yang Ling stated softly.
The assistant said nothing more and bowed. She came forward, took the telegram from her, and left with the same expression as before.
After the assistant left, Yang Ling went to her desk and opened a drawer. She picked a box of pills and went to her exclusive elevator.
It went down and eventually arrived at the basement. When she walked out, her footsteps rang clearly in the spacious and dim area.
When she arrived in front of the ceramic box containing the embryo of the active biosentient entity, she tapped her Realm Pass and waited for a bit. Immediately, a large amount of fluorescent nutrient and calorie-dense fluid flowed into the ceramic box through the tubes attached to it.
While the active biosentient entity was still an embryo, after several modifications, it could be brought to maturity through a large quantity of nutritional fluid. It wouldn’t become a true mature active biosentient entity, but they could use other methods to make up for its flaws. They could even give it power above that of what a mature active biosentient entity should have.
This would drain the active biosentient entity’s life force and potential, but the headquarters were doing it for the artifact. Compared to a Class Three artifact, an active biosentient entity was not worth anything.
Yang Ling opened the box of pills and took out a thumb-sized crimson pill. A few seconds after taking it, her head started swimming, and her breathing became labored. She started hearing all sorts of strange sounds around her.
Strange sights showed up before her eyes, and the large ceramic box disappeared. Instead, she saw what was inside. It was a fingerling with smooth skin instead of scales. It was staring at her with its cone-shaped head. A moment later, this sight vanished, and everything returned to normal.
This was a form of mental resonance, and it made her want to puke. She covered her mouth, took a few steps forward, and put her hand on the ceramic box.
As more nutritional fluid entered it, light started shining from the box. After an unknown amount of time, she heard movement from within it. Then, she saw a strange creature slowly crawl out of the mouth of the box.
The creature resembled a fish that was about three meters long, but it had thin, strong limbs under its belly. Its head was smaller than its body, and it had holes on the sides for ears. Its body was in the shape of a plane, and its skin was smooth but tough. It was dark blue in color and gave off a shine that made it seem like there was water flowing beneath it.
When it breathed deeply, gentle fluorescent light shone on its skin. The creature was connected to the tubes that were injecting nutritional fluid into it. With a shake, it broke off from them and silently got further away from the box.
Yang Ling’s eyes were still shut due to the medicine’s effects making her head swim.
The fish-like thing circled her once before slowly attaching itself to her. Then, its chest spread open to reveal a cavity with white tissue on its walls. Long tendrils came out toward her body and limbs. Some of them pierced her skin.
Yang Ling’s mind regained some clarity. She touched the tendrils, then cast a glance at the reflection on the smooth ceramic box, but she didn’t turn around. Instead, she sucked in a deep breath, spread her arms and fell back into the fish-like creature until she touched the soft tissue.
The opened chest slowly closed up until it covered her entirely. Their bodies and minds became one, as if they had become a single being. Yang Ling felt as if she had gained a powerful body full of life.
This was Water Deity, the active biosentient entity of United Might’s branch company. Once it merged together with someone through mental energy, it could display great fighting power. They could also share energy with each other.
Yang Ling took some time to get used to it. Then, with natural ease, she fell down on Water Deity’s limbs. They felt as if they had always been a part of her, and she had no problem controlling them.
Yang Ling took a few steps with her new body, and her footsteps were so light that she practically made no sound. She also felt that she could move at will on the walls and ceiling.
The colorful tendrils hanging under her chin moved due to sensing something. They were her domain sensors and could receive and seek information from the world around her with great clarity.
Soon, she heard footsteps above. The fins on her back fluttered like wings, and the color of her body faded slowly to blend with the air.
Water Deity had great camouflage abilities, which could increase her survivability in the merged space. After all, their main goal wasn’t to win against strong enemies, but to survive.
The footsteps drew closer, and the assistant arrived. When she saw the severed tubes outside the ceramic box, she walked on the steel framework supporting the ceramic box and looked inside. To none of her surprise, she found that it was empty.
She sensed something and looked up. A cone-shaped head resembling that of an eagle and a fish slowly appeared in an originally empty spot. Then, its whole body showed up, and it was staring at her with narrow and long green eyes.
The assistant wasn’t scared. Instead, a fervent gaze appeared in her eyes. “Miss, have you fused with it successfully?”
Soon, a mental message was projected to her Realm Pass.
“Yes.”
The assistant’s usual indifference was replaced with great excitement. She bowed and said, “If Mr. Yang were to see how high your compatibility rate is with Water Deity, he’d be glad.”
“I need food.”
“Food, is it?”
The assistant straightened her back, and a strange glint appeared in her eyes. “I’ll get everything ready.”
It was the third of October two days later.
At 7 a.m., a small sightseeing airship flew out of Oceanway District’s harbor and stopped above the ocean, just like usual.
Chen Chuan stood within his cabin and brought the Frost King Saber high above his head to swing it down. A gap instantly formed, and piercing light spilled out.
Over the past few days, he fed the Frost King Saber with the remaining nutritional cans. Now, the gap could easily stay over four hours at a time.
This meant that he could spend the entire morning training.
As the Frost King Saber continued growing stronger, he was pretty sure that he could make the gaps stay for even longer, but he wasn’t going to do that, because the longer a gap stayed, the more likely it was going to attract the existences from the other world. If he didn’t deal with them carefully, he might alert the whole world about it. His training would then no longer be efficient.
Four hours was the perfect amount of time.
He sat down and set the Frost King Saber aside to begin his daily mental training.
In the blink of an eye, four hours passed. Just as he was about to end his training, he felt a chill and saw a shadow moving behind the gap. At the same time, his second self started turning unstable.
He had seen such sights rather often over the past few days, but the thing that came over today didn’t seem to be a regular existence.
Chen Chuan grabbed the Frost King Saber and stood up. As he stared ahead, something invisible launched itself to stop the gap from shutting completely.
Chen Chuan sensed the thing trying to force its way out, but he couldn’t see anything. All that betrayed anything happening was a twisting shadow on the floor.
Shing...
He drew the Frost King Saber out of its sheath. Before the sheath landed, he brought the saber high above his head and swung it down on the gap.
A strange feeling assaulted him, and surprise flickered in his eyes. His mental energy surged out, attached itself to his saber, and attacked the gap along with his weapon.
The saber cut through the gap from above, and its tip stopped right at the end of the gap. The opening vanished, like he had deleted it with an eraser.
The invisible existence also disappeared. Only some burnt marks could be seen where the shadow once was to prove that it had been there.
Chen Chuan stayed in his stance for a while before observing the Frost King Saber.
It seemed like the saber wasn’t just able to open gaps, but could also close them, which meant that Chen Chuan didn’t have to wait for them to shut on their own. Before today, it hadn’t been strong enough to do that. It was not a surprise, though. The Fu-Mu Entity’s propagated offspring were able to do such things, so it only made sense that the mysterious creature in his saber could do it too.
Excitement flickered in Chen Chuan’s heart. He could think of many more ways to use the saber.
