Book 4, Chapter 64: Discovery

A few minutes later, Chen Chuan opened his eyes and removed his mind from the artifact. Light shone in his eyes for a while before fading away.

While his strength and speed hadn’t doubled after overlapping with his second self, he became considerably stronger than before. He easily killed the opponent he had originally thought to be dangerous.

He brought the Frost King Saber up, and he could sense faint vibrations coming from it. Clearly, the saber had gained a lot of benefits from it, which meant that this was the correct path to take, albeit perilous, because every time he went inside, the existence he faced got stronger, and if he lost even once, he might just end up dead.

After overlapping with his second self, Chen Chuan could get stronger, but there was a limit to it. Meanwhile, he still couldn’t see the limit of how strong the other existence could get. Chen Chuan had to assess and maintain the right balance. After a brief consideration, he decided that with his current strength, he could challenge the existence up to four more times before he had to stop.

But as he continued training, his mental energy was bound to get stronger, so he might get new breakthroughs.

He took a few steps back and brought his saber up before swinging it down. In an instant, a glowing gap appeared.

Compared to before, Chen Chuan was now familiar with opening gaps, and they were always stable. He had also formed a few observations. There was no need for a gap to be too long, but it was better for them to be wider. It made training easier when the length and breadth matched his size when he sat down.

Because of it, there were more things spilling over from the other world. However, this gap was, at the end of the day, quite small and didn’t last long, so most of the time, only insects came over. A couple other creatures he couldn’t identify had shown up a few times, but up to this point, Chen Chuan hadn’t met anything that was a threat to him.

He set the Frost King Saber beside him and sat down in front of the gap. Once he adjusted his breathing, he faced the air flow and light from the gap and used Awakening Clarity to guide quintessence to him while refining his mind.

His first few gaps only lasted for around an hour, but after all his hard work, they could stay for nearly two hours.

Soon, the hours passed, but the gap remained and showed no signs of wavering. Clearly, the Frost King Saber had gotten a huge boost in power this time and an extra twenty or so minutes were added to its original time.

But Chen Chuan knew that it was going to be harder to increase the time further down the line. At most, the gaps he opened would last for around four hours, which would be the most ideal situation.

Yet this was already enough. The longer a gap stayed, the more difficult and problematic the creatures that came over would be. Chen Chuan didn’t have a Single Flow School predecessor protecting him here, so he had to fight all of them himself, which would just waste his time.

The gap in front of him started disappearing slowly, and Chen Chuan stood up. He felt like his mind had become incredibly sharp. He could also hear abnormal voices as well as see abnormal images around him, but in a single moment, he squashed all of that down.

These were just some inevitable side effects that came with making his mind stronger.

The mind needed the body to support it. To make his mental energy stronger, he had to make his brain’s mutated tissue grow, and the growth of mutated tissue depended on the body.

He had already built a strong and sturdy foundation, so he could keep improving. Otherwise, even with sufficient resources, he couldn’t go on. His stronger-than-average foundation meant that the limit of his mental energy was greater than that of the average martial artist, so he might also encounter some problems his predecessors never encountered.

Chen Chuan paid close attention to this, though with his second self around, he could have his second self withstand some of the things never stated before in records.

When there was only a bit left of the gap before him, he heard faint knocking on the door. He looked over and saw an interpreted telegram slide under his door.

He went over and picked it up. After reading through it, he found that Huang Weiyi was asking for him, though he didn’t state the reason why. Chen Chuan guessed that the agent had gotten some kind of clue regarding United Might.

Chen Chuan put the telegram and everything around him away. Things had gone pretty well this time. No strange insects came out, so he didn’t need to clean up.

After around ten minutes, the airship changed directions and went back to Central City. While passing by the harbor, Chen Chuan looked down and, since the fog was gone, saw a clear view of the anchored ships. There were two Distant Mountain-class warships and a Snowy Plains-Class flagship.

Some strong martial artists might be staying in the ships, because when he looked over, he sensed several gazes trained on his airship.

He then looked outward and saw a few airships flying around White Bird District and Central City, but he didn’t see the airship with the Linacrox Union’s martial arts master. He should still be above an island nation.

They returned within Central City’s waters, so Chen Chuan put on his Realm Pass to contact Huang Weiyi. The agent immediately answered his call. “Lead Investigator Chen, hello!”

“Any news from your side, Mr. Huang?” Chen Chuan asked.

“Yes. I wouldn’t have bothered you otherwise.” From their conversation last time, Huang Weiyi had figured out that Chen Chuan wasn’t the type to engage in small talk, so he went straight to the point.

“Based on your instructions, we found three suspicious people in the intersection between Roaring Victory District and Deep End District. They match the description you provided.”

Huang Weiyi sent the location over.

Chen Chuan took a look. The place wasn’t far from Lu Fang’s martial arts school. It was around six kilometers northwest.

There were a lot of non-citizens gathered there. Based on the location, it was at the center of one of the gathering places. According to what Chen Chuan remembered, there was an entrance leading to the lower city district a few hundred meters from this place, which would make it easy to retreat or go back and forth between the lower city district whenever they wanted.

“Only this place?” he asked.

“Right now, this is the only place we’ve discovered with suspicious people that match your description. We’re still looking into other places, but we didn’t want to hold up your work, so I immediately contacted you the moment we found them,” Huang Weiyi explained.

Chen Chuan believed that United Might would not have all their people gathered in one place, but Huang Weiyi was still really capable for being able to find these people within such a short amount of time.

“Do you have anything else for me?” he asked.

“Yes. We have some photos. Please take a look.” Then, he sent a dozen photos over.

Chen Chuan skimmed through them. The first showed a man with a ghastly gaze; he was looking outside with a slight turn of his head. Most of his face was covered by the curtains, but Chen Chuan could still see a thin face, a powerful body, and the unique demeanor of martial artists.

The second was a stocky man. He had thick limbs, and he wore a custom-made protective vest. Some of the metal buckles had a matte finish, which made it clear that he wasn’t from the lower city district but came from some powerful organization.

The third was a woman. She was so well-built that she was bigger than the previous two. She was also a head taller than they were. This woman had a crew cut, and Chen Chuan was only able to tell that she was a woman based on her bone structure.

The other photos were of these people moving about. Based on them, Chen Chuan could figure out their general movement rhythm and their strengths.

“How did you get the photos?” he asked.

He could tell based on the three’s postures that the photos were taken at different times. No average person would have been able to monitor these people. If they stared at them a bit longer, they would catch their attention, which made long periods of surveillance impossible.

“I have a subordinate who can see everything within three kilometers in his mind,” Huang Weiyi explained.

“He can remember all the details about what he saw, and he’s really good at drawing, so he can draw everything he sees. His drawings are no different from photos.

“That’s not all. He can also reconstruct the movements of people for a few seconds before and after he first sees them. He can draw all of that too.”

Chen Chuan was quite surprised. This was clearly an incredibly unique mental talent. He checked the photos again and found that some of them were reconstructed.

There was no way he could have lied about them either, especially in terms of the details. The unique movement rhythm of martial artists couldn’t be forged at random.

This ability was great for investigations.

“Are you still watching?” he asked.

“Yes. We are.”

“Keep watching, then. They should have already discovered you. If you stop watching, they might think that you’re prepared to do something,” Chen Chuan stated calmly.

“They have?” Huang Weiyi was stunned.

“They’re not the average person,” Chen Chuan pointed out.

If these people possessed mental energy, then no matter how far away they were, they could sense the people who were constantly watching them.

“What...”

Huang Weiyi felt chills crawl down his spine, and cold sweat beaded on his head.

He had never considered the possibility of being exposed, but Chen Chuan shouldn’t be lying to him.

He knew the Resolution Department’s targets weren’t the average person. This was apparent from the photos, but Huang Weiyi had even gotten near them. If those people had come out of their buildings back then...

“Calm down. Just go on as usual. If they haven’t done anything so far, it’s because they’re trying to figure out where you’re from or do not see you as a problem. Regardless of which it is, just maintain your current mode of operation. I’m going back now,” Chen Chuan stated coolly to help Huang Weiyi regain his nerves.
