Book 4, Chapter 50: Direction

After the Resolution Department left, the teenager returned to the basement and stood in front of the active biosentient entity.

While it was just an embryo and couldn’t fight, as a biosentient entity, the moment it connected to the Fu-Mu Entity’s domain and received information about all things happening in Central City, it could start providing strategic suggestions for the company.

At the same time, the active biosentient entity represented the headquarters’ will.

They had come to Jibei Road’s Central City to expand their business, but that was just on the surface. They actually had other tasks to do in the shadows.

Once the teenager put her hand on the ceramic box, she heard rustling sounds that seemed to have come from a distant place.

After a while, she pulled her hand back with slightly quickened breathing.

The tasks had entered her mind.

Once she composed herself, she started organizing them.

First, United Might’s headquarters had already formed an agreement with the municipal government. They would set up a channel leading to the merged space for the company, while the company would provide Central City with manpower strong enough to fight against the imperial army.

The company requested her to make good use of this chance to organize a group and head to the merged space in search of artifacts. This was of utmost importance to the company.

Since there was a gap in the World Ring, and it was right around this area, the chances of artifacts appearing here were much higher. The headquarters were also going to give her more powerful martial artists later on, since the branch company would have to compete against other companies and state-owned enterprises.

Next, she was to continue developing implants. The company needed more subjects, so she should get more suitable experimental subjects from the gangs, mercenary groups, the tournament, and other channels. If the conditions allowed her to do so, she could also head to the lower city district to set up an experiment area.

Last, she was to prioritize searching for artifacts. The moment she found one, she was to do whatever she could to secure it. If necessary, she could even use contingency measures.

Once the teenager sorted through all the requests, she sucked in a few deep breaths and walked out of the basement.

The assistant was waiting for her. When she saw the teenager, she bowed and said, “Miss, even though Central City has been in a state of crisis management over the past few months, we need to pay attention to the Resolution Department’s hostility. Please let me contact a few politicians we’re close to so that we can put pressure on the Resolution Department.”

The teenager’s expression had returned to one of calmness. “Do it.”

Back in his apartment, Chen Chuan was reading the report from the inspection. The fact that United Might had brought an active biosentient entity made their stance clear: They were planning to officially establish their footing in Central City.

United Might’s main businesses were logistics and private security services. They had plenty of armed combatants and powerful martial artists. The number of combatants they saw today could only protect the motorcade, so they were definitely not the company’s entire force.

As for United Might’s general manager...

Chen Chuan checked the photo sent by the information division. It showed a girl that was around sixteen years old. The report stated that she was Yang Ling, a United Might director’s adopted daughter. Aside from her name, though, she had no other information available. It looked like it had been intentionally withheld.

Her face gave Chen Chuan a sense of déjà vu. She looked quite similar to a certain person he’d seen in a photo.

He stared at her.

Could it be her?

Zhao Qian had said that they were never going to find Shen Zheng’s sister.

The worst case scenario would have been that she was no longer around, but Chen Chuan had a feeling that this was not what Zhao Qian meant.

And based on the information he gathered, Zhao Qian had received a significant promotion jump after coming to Central City.

It wasn’t surprising for a graduate from Martial Valor University to get Zhao Qian’s position. Sun Zhiming of Azure Dragon was a good example, but he had gotten his position through his own abilities and experience. Zhao Qian, though, had been promoted so quickly that it was almost as if he got his position the moment he joined the company.

It was possible that he had contributed greatly to the company, but Chen Chuan couldn’t find anything like that in his CV.

If that were the case... Chen Chuan thought of another possibility.

Certain people were born with unique talents, and companies valued them highly. If Shen Zheng’s sister was one such person, then everything would fall into place.

It would also explain why Zhao Qian got promoted so quickly. It would have been his reward for finding an important talent for United Might.

But why did they send her over? Was it because her talent was useful in helping United Might establish their footing here?

Zhao Qian had said that they would never find her. With Chen Chuan’s rank back then, it was indeed impossible for him to get into contact with a director’s adopted daughter. He couldn’t have fought against and taken down such a big company alone either. That was why he had asked Lu Fang to stop investigating for the time being.

But now, things were different.

If United Might could come back, the municipal government must have allowed it, although Chen Chuan was pretty sure that the Department of Administrative Affairs wasn’t happy about it.

This was a company that had tried to ship a propagated offspring out of the city, and yet, they were still able to stay in Central City? This would make people not care about Central City’s laws and order, which would lead to more chaos and violence.

Hence, even if the Resolution Department couldn’t chase the company out, they had to monitor it closely and keep it under a tight leash to make sure that its activities wouldn’t threaten Central City’s safety.

However, in order to deal with the Union’s representatives and the Linacrox Union’s diplomatic delegation, the Resolution Department couldn’t allocate a lot of manpower to watching United Might. Chen Chuan would have to decide just how far he could go with this task.

After some thinking, he decided that he needed to be patient about this. He should first learn what United Might was going to do, which meant gathering more information before taking his next step.

He called Safe Shield.

“Safe Shield, at your service. How may I help you, Lead Investigator Chen?”

“I need you to monitor United Might’s domain information at all times. If anything strange happens, tell me immediately,” Chen Chuan ordered.

“Understood. Your request has been listed as a critical task.”

“Okay,” Chen Chuan said and contacted Wu Bei. “Please monitor United Might’s communications with a resonator team. I need to know where all their calls are directed.”

“Got it!” Wu Bei answered excitedly.

Then, Chen Chuan contacted the Resolution Department. “I need to reassign Captain Bao.

“Alright, please send the potential list of replacements.”

Then, he made arrangements for other things he needed to pay attention to. Once he was done, he took a sip of his drink and returned to his daily training.

The next day, after he finished meditating, he took a shower, went to enjoy the merged space food he had ordered previously in the dining hall, and returned to his apartment to change. He opened the window to let Dawncall fly out, then went to his cabinet and took out a rectangular package.

With it and the Frost King Saber in hand, he left the apartment and took the elevator down.

Ten minutes later, he drove out of the Arcane Palace and headed north on the public road.

Yesterday, he had opened a gap on the public road to the east, but he had a feeling that he shouldn’t keep opening a gap in the same place. That was why he decided to head north this time.

Upon leaving the city, he took a turn and went to the wilderness. After driving for a little over half an hour, he parked his car near a wind-sheltered mound.

Once he got out, he set up a large blackout tent he had bought from Martial Valor University. He wouldn’t have to worry about people noticing him while training inside it.

Without any effort whatsoever, he set up the tent. Dawncall had come with him, and it served as his sentry. Since the Bird Reptile’s field of vision was much wider than Chen Chuan’s, it could locate people when they were still far away. If they proved to be a problem, it would warn him.

Chen Chuan went inside, but didn’t immediately open a gap. Instead, he grabbed the package and opened it to retrieve the long, spine-like bone with the jagged edges.

It was the artifact Talu had given him on the day he left Mistlight Island.

After going back to his apartment yesterday, he had thought of a possibility. Artifacts came from the other world. When he formed a mental connection with it, an existence from the other world would show up. Could the Frost King Saber absorb it as nourishment?

Chen Chuan didn’t know whether it would work, but he could try.

Shing.

He pulled out the Frost King Saber and put a hand on the artifact. Just when he wanted to test his hypothesis, he heard a chirp in the sky, and he scowled.

Chen Chuan walked out with his saber and saw cars heading over from several kilometers away. There were about seven of them. Five of them were armored combat vehicles, one was a fuel tanker, while the last was an off-road transport vehicle from Fenghai.

Judging by the direction they were headed, the cars were coming for him.

These wilderness hyenas had such sensitive noses. They had to have seen his tent and car.

As the cars got closer, the rumbling grew clearer. Soon, they were only a kilometer away. When they were around three hundred meters away, Chen Chuan heard gunshots.

Clearly, some of them thought that he wasn’t an easy target. So, even if they saw that he was alone, they decided to shoot first, ask questions later.

The bullets zipped past him. Occasionally, one or two came straight at him, but he hit them off with a casual flick of his hand.

The “hyenas” started panicking after noticing his reaction, because they knew that they had run into someone tough, and started turning around.

The next second, an invisible wave of energy swept past them, and their eyes rolled back before all of them lost consciousness. At the same time, they lost control over their bladders. The out-of-control cars started swerving off the road as their drivers stopped breathing.

The light in Chen Chuan’s eyes slowly faded away. Once he was back in his tent, he went to the spine-like bone and put his hand on it. The moment his mind came into contact with it, his body sank, and he saw himself touching the wrinkled, gray skin of a large creature.
