"Hurry up and let him go!" Deputy Director Zhang of the sub‑station barked at Officer Wu.
"Ah!" Officer Wu nodded, walked over, and unlocked the handcuffs for Su Xiaoliu.
"We’ve really wronged you, Mr. Su, I’m very sorry. This time it’s our station that dropped the ball." Deputy Director Zhang said as he shook hands with Su Xiaoliu.
"No, no, Officer Wu’s been very friendly to me." Su Xiaoliu looked at Officer Wu with a squinty smile and said.
"That’s best." Deputy Director Zhang turned his head and gave Officer Wu a meaningful look.
A bead of cold sweat slid down Officer Wu’s forehead again.
"Mr. Su, what exactly happened here?" Deputy Director Zhang asked Su Xiaoliu.
"Deputy Director Zhang, here’s how it went. Our guys from the construction site went to a little convenience store near the Beishan District Development Zone to buy water and ice cream. The shop owner jacked the price into the stratosphere—just a few bottles of water and a few ice creams, and he actually wanted 2,000 yuan. Our guys said forget it then, they weren’t buying. The shop owner tried to start a fight, so the two of them started brawling. Our guys left enough money and then took the stuff they’d already grabbed and walked off."
"Then the little shop owner showed up at our site with twenty or thirty guys carrying sticks, and they had another fight with our construction crew."
"Mm, and then?" Deputy Director Zhang asked again.
"We’ve got more people on our crew, so the shop owner’s gang took a loss. But they weren’t willing to let it go. That night they brought even more people over, not only beat up our guys, they tore down our site’s perimeter wall. Leaning on their numbers, they smashed up all the construction equipment on site. We’re looking at a loss of over a hundred grand, easy." Su Xiaoliu rattled the whole story off in one breath.
"Oh... so that’s how it is." Deputy Director Zhang nodded.
"So, Officer Wu, what’s your understanding of the situation?" Deputy Director Zhang turned his head and asked Officer Wu.
Officer Wu was a bit nervous.
It was obvious this Deputy Director Zhang was here to protect Su Xiaoliu. Since Zhang had no intention of arresting Su Xiaoliu, if he insisted on pushing it, he could just wait for Zhang to make his life hell later.
So obviously, he couldn’t tell it straight.
But not telling it straight was also tricky, because there was a laptop sitting right there on the table, and on it the shop’s surveillance footage was paused. The frame was frozen on Su Xiaoliu’s twisted face and the wooden stick about to smash into the fridge.
The evidence was right in front of them—how was he supposed to talk nonsense?
Officer Wu didn’t know what to do, hemming and hawing, refusing to speak.
Of course Deputy Director Zhang wasn’t stupid; the second he walked in he’d seen Su Xiaoliu on the surveillance screen.
But Zhang still kept that calm, fully‑in‑control demeanor, nodded at Officer Wu and said, "It’s fine, just tell it like it is."
"Here’s what happened. At 11 p.m. tonight I got a call to report a crime. The convenience store owner, Boss Sun, told me someone had smashed up his shop. He showed me the surveillance and said the guy who trashed his store was over in the Beishan District Development Zone, so I went out on the call and brought this Mr. Su back to the station."
That one word "brought" was used very artfully.
"So you’re saying you’ve got evidence? Could it be a mistaken identity?" Deputy Director Zhang narrowed his eyes at Officer Wu.
Officer Wu caught on in a flash. Without answering, he turned the laptop around, lowered his head and carefully studied the face in the footage again, then compared it with Su Xiaoliu sitting right in front of him.
Deputy Director Zhang also put on a show, leaning in to glance twice, then asked Officer Wu, "Is that the same person?"
"Ah, would you look at my eyes—getting old and I’ve got presbyopia now. How could I possibly think that’s the same guy!" Officer Wu slapped his forehead like he’d just had an epiphany.
After that, Officer Wu stepped up to Su Xiaoliu again, wanting to shake hands.

"Mr. Su, I’m really sorry, this one’s on me. I apologize to you. It was our station that made a mistake; whoever smashed the convenience store, it must have been someone else!" Officer Wu said.
Su Xiaoliu also put on an act, shaking hands with Officer Wu as he said, "Officer Wu sees right through things and handles cases with care and responsibility. Truly admirable."
On the surface, Su Xiaoliu was praising him, but why did it sound so off?
"Since the misunderstanding’s been cleared up, we at the station apologize to you, Mr. Su. Dragging you down here so late at night, we really are sorry. We’ll arrange for you to head back right now." Deputy Director Zhang said to Su Xiaoliu.
"Alright."
Deputy Director Zhang then sent someone to escort Su Xiaoliu back to the construction site.
The next morning, bright and early, Deputy Director Zhang called Deputy Director Qiao to report in.
"Deputy Director Qiao, the matter’s been cleared up. It was all a misunderstanding. I’ve already sent the guy back."
"Good."
"Alright then, I’ll let you get back to work, Deputy Director Qiao."
Qiao Yutong then called Song Xiaodong.
"I’ve already dug your guy out for you." Qiao Yutong said.
"Whoa, that’s great, thank you so much, Deputy Director Qiao."
"Don’t call me Director Qiao!"
"Director Qiao, didn’t you tell me before, not to call you Tong Tong in front of my wife?" Song Xiaodong said.
"I don’t care. I want to hear it now."

"That’s disgustingly cheesy."
