Chapter 817: Huo Lang and Daya’s Determination! Law Enforcement Team Taking Sides?
“It’s over! It’s all over!”
“Fairy Gu and Lord Mosquito are truly done for this time!”
Sighs rose and fell among the crowd of onlookers. Everyone’s faces were pale with despair as they watched the Jiang Family Grand Elder closing in step by step on the girl and the mosquito.
“The Jiang Family Grand Elder has practiced cultivation for thirty thousand years, and his cultivation has long reached the Half-Step True God Realm,” someone murmured. “I heard he met all the conditions to advance to the True God Realm ages ago. He’s only missing a single opportunity to break through and become a True God. With a powerhouse like that, he wouldn’t even flinch if a True God Realm expert showed up!”
Another chimed in, “Lord Mosquito is only at the Void Refining Realm First Layer, and Fairy Gu is merely at the Divinity Transformation Realm First Layer. Even if they have some unorthodox tricks, they can’t possibly defeat the Jiang Family Grand Elder!”
“Yeah! The gap in their realms is just too vast.”
The onlookers sighed continuously, feeling deep pity for Gu Yuexi and Chu Sheng. They all believed that this time, the duo was doomed.
“They were just too young, too impulsive,” an Elder Cultivator said, shaking his head with a sigh. “If they hadn’t killed Jiang Qingyao and Jiang Xinglan, and instead left some leeway, there would still be room for negotiation. At worst, they could have just left Luoping City, and the Jiang family wouldn’t have hunted them to the ends of the earth. But look at them now—they killed a Jiang family prodigy and their most favored princess. It’s no wonder the Jiang Family Grand Elder immediately moved in for the kill the moment he arrived, completely denying Fairy Gu any chance to explain herself.”
A middle-aged cultivator nearby frowned, unable to hold back his retort. “It was Jiang Qingyao who started it! She came looking for trouble, attempting to murder them and steal their treasures. Fairy Gu acted in self-defense. According to the laws of Luoping City, Fairy Gu shouldn’t bear any responsibility for the deaths of Jiang Qingyao and Jiang Xinglan. They brought it upon themselves.”
The Elder Cultivator shook his head. “But the Jiang Family Grand Elder is clearly hell-bent on killing Fairy Gu and Lord Mosquito for revenge. What can we do about it? We’re just ordinary loose cultivators; our words hold no weight. Not to mention us—didn’t you see the Law Enforcement Team turn their heads and pretend not to notice? Even the authorities have tacitly approved of the Jiang Family Grand Elder’s illegal actions. Alas, the Law Enforcement Team is ultimately in cahoots with the Eight Great Clans. They would never stand up for loose cultivators like us.”
“You said it!” someone else agreed. “We’re just ordinary loose cultivators. Our voices are too weak to change anything. All we can do is watch.”
Listening to the helpless, defeated discussions of the surrounding loose cultivators, Huo Lang, who stood at the very front of the crowd, clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white. As he stared at the Jiang Family Grand Elder’s lofty, unbearably arrogant demeanor, the fury he had suppressed for so long suddenly boiled over.
“Who says we loose cultivators can only be slaughtered at will?!” Huo Lang suddenly roared at the top of his lungs, his booming voice drowning out the surrounding murmurs. Everyone froze, falling silent as they turned to look at him in unison.
“Who says we loose cultivators can only be oppressed by the Eight Great Clans, forever denied a chance to rise?! Who says we loose cultivators can only accept our lot in life and never change our fate?!”
With a fierce stomp of his foot, Huo Lang shot into the air. In a flash, he blocked the Jiang Family Grand Elder’s path, his eyes locked dead on the older man. His entire body trembled, but he didn’t take a single step back.
“Today, I’m risking it all! Even if I die, I’ll die in front of Lord Mosquito!” he shouted. “I’m going to let those from the Eight Great Clans know that we loose cultivators have backbone! We loose cultivators aren’t soft persimmons you can just squeeze whenever you please!”
With that, he gritted his teeth and flew forward a bit more, facing the Jiang Family Grand Elder’s oppressive aura head-on.
Huo Lang stretched out his hands, forcing himself to appear calm. “If… if you want to kill Lord Mosquito and Fairy Gu, you’ll have to… have to step over my dead body first!”
He was shaking violently, his teeth chattering uncontrollably; he was obviously terrified out of his wits. The aura of a Half-Step True God Realm expert was simply not something a Junior Cultivator at the Profound Understanding Realm could withstand. Yet, he refused to yield an inch, standing ramrod straight right in the middle of the path.
Forced to halt his advance, the Jiang Family Grand Elder frowned. He looked down at Huo Lang from his high vantage point, his eyes brimming with disdain. “A piece of trash with mere Profound Understanding Realm cultivation dares to interfere with my business? Do you have any idea who I am?”
“I… I know.” Enduring the terrifying pressure radiating from the Jiang Family Grand Elder, Huo Lang stiffened his neck and replied, “You… aren’t you just the Jiang Family Grand Elder? What’s so great about that?”
“Oh?!” The Jiang Family Grand Elder laughed out of pure fury, his gaze growing icy. “It seems I truly haven’t walked around Luoping City in too long. Now any random stray dog dares to block my path. You really don’t know the meaning of death. Boy, what is your name…” He paused and sneered. “Never mind. I have no interest in knowing the name of a corpse.”
With a wave of his right hand, a world-destroying power coalesced in his palm. The pulsating grayish-black light was enough to make one’s heart palpitate in terror. A single palm strike from this would undoubtedly reduce Huo Lang to ash, leaving not even a speck of dust behind.
Terrified, Huo Lang squeezed his eyes shut and waited for death to descend, yet he felt no regret in his heart.
Right at that moment, he felt a warm grip tightly grasping his right hand. Huo Lang opened his eyes in astonishment.
Standing beside him was none other than Daya. She wore a simple, earnest smile on her face, flashing a set of white teeth at him.
“Brother Lang, didn’t we agree to stand in front of Lord Mosquito together?” she asked. “Why did you sneak up here without waiting for me!”
Huo Lang opened his mouth, tears spilling uncontrollably from the corners of his eyes. It was a mix of fear and deep emotion. He nodded vigorously and gripped Daya’s hand even tighter.
“Good buddy! We’re in this together!”
Hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder, the two stood firmly in Elder Jiang’s path. Beneath that crushing pressure, their frail silhouettes stood as unyielding as two small mountains.
Elder Jiang furrowed his brow slightly and remarked with frosty impatience, “Profound Understanding Realm. Another one coming to seek death.”
The Divine Power in his palm intensified a notch, the light shining even brighter, ensuring that a single strike would obliterate them both. It would save him the trouble of having to strike twice.
Not far away, the members of the Law Enforcement Team watched this unfold with hesitation. They all turned their heads to look at their captain, Xiao Feng, waiting for him to make a decision.
They hadn’t been in a position to intervene when Elder Jiang targeted Chu Sheng and Gu Yuexi. After all, Chu Sheng had indeed killed the Jiang family’s prodigy. Revenge, however dubious its justification, still served as an excuse for the Jiang family. But Huo Lang and Daya were completely innocent—they were just two ordinary, young loose cultivators. Allowing Elder Jiang to publicly slaughter the innocent clearly violated Luoping City’s rules. The Law Enforcement Team couldn’t possibly justify turning a blind eye.
Noticing his team members’ gazes fixed on him, Xiao Feng felt a severe headache coming on and rubbed his temples. He had already lowered his principles and made compromises time and time again today. If he truly allowed Elder Jiang to murder Huo Lang and Daya—committing senseless slaughter in public—the righteous Dao heart he had always pursued would inevitably collapse. It would guarantee the birth of a Heart Demon in his future Cultivation, eliminating any possibility of advancing further. However, he also wasn’t in a good position to stop the Jiang family from taking their revenge.
After agonizing over the situation, Xiao Feng came up with a compromise.
“Big Head, Er Gou, go up there and drag that man and woman away. Don’t let them cause trouble here.”
The eyes of the Law Enforcement Team members lit up, and they immediately gave Xiao Feng a thumbs-up.
“Our captain always has a way! This way, we don’t offend the Jiang family, and we still save those two kids.”
Receiving their orders, Big Head and Er Gou charged forward at once. Grabbing Huo Lang and Daya by the arms—one from the left, one from the right—they prepared to forcibly drag them away…
