Chapter 475 - 408: You Call Me Ugly?
Chapter 475: Chapter 408: You Call Me Ugly?
Lex Cross’s true form was at the Cosmic Level, just a single step away from the War God Level. On Earth, his Superpower Level cultivation had originally relied on absorbing Crystal Cores, just like everyone else.
However, due to the appearance of spatial rifts on Earth, he had begun to gradually recover his original Superpower Level.
In other words, he could slowly regain his power even without absorbing any Crystal Cores.
Though this wasn’t his original body, his Cosmic Level soul and consciousness had strengthened it to near-Cosmic Level durability when they merged.
So even though Lex Cross’s superpower hadn’t returned to its peak, his physical strength was currently unmatched by anyone on Earth.
Yet this old woman before him, as gaunt as a walking skeleton, had managed to leave marks on his arm just by gripping it with her hands—on a body with near-Cosmic Level fortitude.
This was just absurd.
Lex Cross glanced at the old woman and shook his arms, flinging her away. Although she was thrown backward, she only staggered a few steps before catching her balance.
They continued to glare furiously at Lex Cross and Flora Bloom.
"Outsiders, how did you get in here? And why did you destroy our Divine Tree!"
"My pet had no choice—it had to do it to pull us out of the illusion. Your illusion almost trapped us in there forever! We’re the ones who should be complaining!"
A glint flashed in the lead elder’s eyes. He didn’t look particularly angry, but his tone was even more unforgiving.
"For destroying the Divine Tree, you should die here. But, seeing as it was an accident, you may leave. Go now!"
The moment the elder finished speaking, the people behind him glared at Flora Bloom and Lex Cross. The old woman, however, refused to let the matter go.
"They can’t leave! A sky god has protected this place since the apocalypse. Outsiders can’t get in! Not only did they barge in and destroy the Divine Tree, but he also pushed an old woman like me! We can’t let them go!"
Flora Bloom was about to tell the Golden Crow to prepare for a quick escape, but Lex Cross just stood there with his arms crossed, showing no intention of leaving. Hearing the old woman’s tirade, he suddenly smiled.
"We had no intention of leaving in the first place!" He looked at the lead elder, pulled Flora Bloom to his side with one hand, and draped his arm over her shoulder as they walked toward the town’s residents.
"This peach grove is as beautiful as a painting. A fine place for a scenic tour. I wonder if some kind soul would be willing to put us up for a few nights?"
"Don’t you push your luck! We can’t let them stay here! Quick, seize them! Sacrifice them to the Divine Tree!"
"That’s right! Kill them! Only then will the great sky god continue to protect us from the demons outside!"
"Kill them!"
"Kill!"
"Kill!"
The crowd behind the elder erupted in a furious uproar. The sheer force of their cries was enough to shatter eardrums.
It was hard to imagine how such gaunt figures could produce such a deafening, full-throated racket.
"Village Chief! We can’t let them leave this place alive!"
Flora Bloom glanced at the elder they called the Village Chief. ’Looks like I was right,’ she thought. ’He’s the leader here.’
’Lex Cross wouldn’t have brought me to a place like this for no reason. Judging by his behavior, he must have planned this all along.’
’These villagers don’t seem to know much about the outside world. They know about zombies, but they don’t seem to know about people with superpowers.’
’And judging from their conversation, their current condition must have something to do with the "sky god" they keep mentioning.’
"Lex, why don’t we just stay at the Village Chief’s house? Since he’s the chief, I’m sure he’ll treat us to the best food and drinks they have."
Seeing that not only were they refusing to leave, but they now wanted to crash at his house, the Village Chief’s face darkened.
"Someone, tie them up!" the old woman shrieked from behind the Village Chief, her eyes cold as ice. "We’ll pick an auspicious time and turn them into fertilizer for the Divine Tree! An offering to the sky god for all his help!"
"Yes!"
"Yes!"
The old woman had whipped the villagers into a frenzy. They advanced on Flora Bloom and Lex, brandishing hoes, wooden clubs, and other items with little real offensive power.
Lex Cross remained impassive, but lightning crackled around him, eager to be unleashed. Just as the villagers closed to within a few steps, the electricity erupted, weaving itself into a net that instantly enveloped all of them—all except for the Village Chief.
Flora Bloom watched in amusement as the lightning net trapped the villagers. All one hundred of them were sprawled obediently on the ground, not daring to even think about touching the crackling web of electricity above their heads.
"Village Chief, may we go to your home now?"
As the pair started to follow the Village Chief, the old woman on the ground suddenly lunged, trying to break out of the net. She was immediately zapped by Lex Cross’s lightning, and her body went rigid with paralysis.
"I wouldn’t struggle if I were you, granny," Flora Bloom said, pointing at Lex Cross. "As long as he’s alive, that net isn’t going anywhere." Then, the two of them resumed following the Village Chief down the narrow, bluestone path.
The old Village Chief led the way, trembling, while Lex Cross ambled slowly behind him with an arm around Flora Bloom.
The bluestone tiles were smooth and even, making for a comfortable, non-slip path.
"Village Chief, I’d advise you not to try any funny business. If we get trapped here, I’ll have my little pet burn this entire peach grove to the ground."
Flora Bloom’s tone was casual, but it sent a chill down the Village Chief’s spine. "Please, young lady, don’t do that! Our people have lived in this ancient town for generations. We can’t let you destroy the grove!"
Lex Cross patted Flora Bloom’s shoulder. "Just lead the way, Village Chief." He glanced at Flora Bloom. "Sigh. This girlfriend of mine... she talks a tough game, but she always backs it up."
Flora Bloom shot him a glare. "You’re the one trapping people in a lightning net! You’re way more ruthless than I am!"
"Sure, I trapped them in the net. But you were the one who said it wouldn’t disappear unless I died. These villagers are a tough bunch. What if they all attacked at once and actually managed to kill me?"
Flora Bloom looked Lex Cross up and down. "You? Please. You could take on ten times this many people and not break a sweat."
At that, Flora Bloom suddenly pulled his hand away. "Speaking of which, you’ve been so clingy lately. And now you’ve dragged me out here for ’fun.’ What’s this really about?"
A flicker of something passed through Lex Cross’s eyes. "Can’t I take you out on a trip just for the fun of it?"
They walked for ten minutes. The path remained paved with bluestone, but the architecture on either side began to change dramatically.
The modern-renovated townhouses gave way to buildings that looked like they were from a much older, purely historical period.
As the three of them walked on, the Village Chief, listening to the young couple’s banter behind him, found his expression gradually softening.
"Young lady, that boyfriend of yours is quite good to you."
Flora Bloom hurried a few steps to catch up to the elder. "Oh? And how can you tell?"
Lex Cross pulled her back into his embrace. "Slow down!"
The elder stopped, turned around, and sized up Flora Bloom before looking at Lex Cross. "Well, for a man to be so devoted and protective of a girlfriend as ugly as yours... that’s a rare sight indeed!"
"Me? Ugly?"
Flora Bloom stared at the elder and pointed to her own face. "Are your eyes going bad, old man? You’re calling *me* ugly?"
