Chapter 466 - 399: Misunderstanding
Chapter 466: Chapter 399: Misunderstanding
The golden firebird was enormous. The closer it got, the more it terrified the two people in the treetop, leaving them too scared to move an inch.
Golden feathers, golden eyes, a golden crest, and golden talons. It was gold all over, and its wingspan looked to be more than thirty meters wide.
Oscar Owen’s brow was deeply furrowed. This was the largest bird he had ever seen. If it was targeting their village, no amount of people could hold out against its assault.
’I have to get everyone to retreat to a safe place immediately.’
"Fisher, this situation is critical, and you must do exactly as I say. Your Fog Element can conceal you. Use it, and go tell everyone to retreat to the foot of the mountain. Immediately."
Of course, Marina Goldsmith knew how serious the situation was. A firebird that large looked like it could obliterate everyone in their village with a single flap of its wings.
"But, Big Mr. Owens, what about you? Come with me!"
"I can’t. If we’re its target, I have to hold it off! Go, quickly! Save as many people as you can! Don’t delay! Take my mother with you—don’t wait for me!"
Oscar Owen knew he had no hope of victory against this enormous firebird. He could only try to stall it. But even that might not buy them much time.
Her voice catching, Marina Goldsmith managed a single word, "Okay," then turned and vanished into a cloud of mist.
This mist was somewhat similar to the kind Flora Bloom often used. The difference was, Flora’s mist could conceal one’s form and block out sound.
Marina Goldsmith’s mist could only provide concealment; any loud noise would give her away. On her way, she did startle a few weasels hibernating in their burrows.
"Master, there’s movement up ahead."
The Golden Crow, carrying Flora Bloom, was flying at high speed through the air when it suddenly spotted movement on a nearby mountain. It seemed to be a few small weasels.
"Oh?" Flora Bloom peered intently. A wisp of white mist flashed past, not particularly conspicuous in the dark of night. Coupled with their distance, anyone else would have completely missed it.
But Flora Bloom was a Water Ability User herself—and one with exceptionally strong spiritual power at that. She was an expert at using such white mist for deception.
"Let’s fly in for a closer look."
The Golden Crow obeyed, swiftly descending with Flora Bloom toward the mountain where it had spotted the movement.
The mountain was lush and green, but at night it was difficult for an ordinary person to see anything. The Golden Crow’s eyes, however, were sharper than a gyrfalcon’s, capable of spotting the smallest objects from a kilometer away.
Just as the two of them closed to within five hundred meters of the mountain, still descending.
A dozen Wind Blades flew at them, forming a net in the air.
"Dodge!"
At Flora Bloom’s curt command, the Golden Crow gave a powerful flap of its wings and shot back up into the sky, dodging all the Wind Blades.
In the treetop, Oscar Owen started at the sound of that single word: "Dodge!" He peered through a gap in the leaves at the great golden bird in the sky. A woman was sitting casually cross-legged on its back.
"Flora Bloom?"
Sensing the spiritual power of a Wind Ability User, Flora Bloom immediately looked toward the treetop. Just then, Oscar Owen’s figure came into view.
"Oscar Owen?"
"Flora Bloom, is it really you?"
Oscar Owen’s eyes lit up with joy and surprise. But when he saw Flora Bloom’s stomach, his smile gradually froze. "Are you...?"
Flora Bloom patted her eight-months-pregnant belly. "Eight months along. Huh? What are you doing here?"
Oscar Owen lowered his guard, an unreadable emotion swirling in his eyes as he looked at Flora Bloom. "It’s a long story... Do you want to come down?"
Flora Bloom had the Golden Crow land in a clearing. But just as she dismounted, a flurry of ice and snow began to fall from the sky, shot through with crackling bolts of Thunder Energy.
The Thunderbird was not as massive as the Golden Crow, but it wasn’t much smaller. It was being ridden by Lex Cross in pursuit of Flora Bloom’s Golden Crow.
As a species, Thunderbirds couldn’t compare to the Golden Crow clan. Furthermore, the Golden Crow’s bloodline had been awakened through a ritual, resulting in a massive boost to its size, superpowers, and other abilities. So even though the Thunderbird was a higher level, its speed was still no match for the Golden Crow’s.
The Thunderbird was still a hundred meters up, unable to descend quickly enough. Lex Cross used the flakes of ice—each as thin as a cicada’s wing—and the bolts of Thunder Energy as stepping stones, leaping from the sky.
He landed right beside Flora Bloom, his eyes filled with reproach. The sheer force of his presence not only pressured Flora Bloom but sent a tremor of unease through Oscar Owen as well.
"It’s you? Captain Cross? What are you..." Oscar Owen looked at Lex Cross, noticing his gaze was fixed entirely on Flora Bloom. "You two know each other?"
Flora Bloom shot Lex Cross a glare. "Can’t I even come out for some fresh air?"
Lex Cross’s thick brows furrowed. "Your parents are worried sick about you."
"I ran into a friend. I’ll hang out for a bit and be back later!"
Lex Cross sized up Oscar Owen and gave a slight nod by way of greeting. "My wife. She’s a bit mischievous, please bear with her."
Those words sent a shockwave through Oscar Owen’s heart.
The Lex Cross he’d met several months ago was already a master among superpower users. Back then, Lex Cross had been cold and aloof; after saving them, he hadn’t even bothered to spare them a single word.
’He’d known Flora Bloom for a long time. And that belly... she couldn’t have gotten pregnant after the apocalypse, could she?’
’Were those two secretly together even before the apocalypse?’
Seeing that Lex Cross and Oscar Owen already knew each other, Flora Bloom didn’t bother with introductions. Instead, she said, her face flushed with annoyance, "Who’s your wife? What are you talking about? Shoo, shoo, stop following me everywhere! I’m a grown woman, and I have the Golden Crow with me. I’ll be fine!"
But Lex Cross acted as if he hadn’t heard a word. When he saw her start to follow Oscar Owen toward the village on the mountainside, he simply fell into step behind them.
After several minutes of silence, the village ahead suddenly erupted. Flames lit up the sky as a large crowd of people holding torches charged out.
"What’s going on?" Flora Bloom stopped, listening to the chaotic sound of footsteps. She could feel the fluctuations of superpowers coming from every single person.
’Damn! A thousand or two, and every last one of them is a superpower user!’
’Luckily, their Superpower Levels are all over the place. If they were all Middle Level, a single attack from each of them would be enough to overwhelm me.’
On high alert, Lex Cross instantly appeared in front of Flora Bloom. A black energy emanated from him, enveloping the three of them completely.
"Big Mr. Owens, we’re here to help! Where’s that firebird monster?"
"Charge! Everyone, together! Let’s knock that firebird out of the sky and roast it for dinner!"
"Hurry! Where’s Big Mr. Owens? We have to help him!"
Just as the crowd charged up the mountainside path, they saw Oscar Owen being swallowed by a cloud of black energy.
At that moment, the fierce mountain folk couldn’t care less about some bird monster. All they knew was that the leader of their Korsan Base had been swallowed by black energy and was in danger.
And so, the Metal Element users formed a line in front of everyone else, while the Earth Ability Users erected a wall around the mass of black energy. Wind and Fire Element superpowers were hurled into the enclosure—at Lex Cross’s black energy—as if they were free.
In an instant, the spot where Lex Cross and the others stood was enclosed by an earthen wall. With Fire and Wind Element energies churning chaotically inside, the space had effectively been turned into an Alchemy Furnace.
"Wait! Stop! It’s all a misunderstanding!"
Oscar Owen yelled desperately, but his voice was completely muffled by the black energy, inaudible to those outside.
