Chapter 423 - 370: Summoning System Superpower
Chapter 423: Chapter 370: Summoning System Superpower
Lex Cross’s large convoy had been traveling on the highway for just over an hour when they suddenly heard the sounds of superpowers clashing not far ahead.
A group of people drew closer to look and found a five-person squad fighting a small horde of about a hundred zombies.
From the looks of the scene, among the hundred-odd zombies was a tall one with an intact face, lurking at the left rear of the horde. It was taking potshots at the five-person squad, firing three consecutive Fireballs at the injured woman at the back of their group.
Realizing she could no longer hold her own, the woman spat a mouthful of blood into her palm and muttered an incantation. A red, bloody light enveloped her, and a massive fox appeared before the squad, engaging the horde of nearly a hundred zombies.
The fox’s fur was a deep, purplish-crimson, with only its forehead, the tips of its ears, its four paws, and the tips of its three tails being white.
It shielded the five-person squad, cracking open the skulls of the zombies in front of it one by one with its claws. The other four squad members’ faces lit up, and they began to fall back, trying to retreat with the woman.
But just then, the woman’s stamina clearly gave out, her spiritual power completely depleted. Her face was pale as she coughed up another mouthful of blood, her weakened body starting to sway as if on the verge of collapse.
"Rita!"
A man who wasn’t very tall but had well-developed muscles shouted urgently, rushing over immediately to catch the woman in his arms.
"Shawn, my superpower is depleted. I’m sorry!"
Shawn Hale’s heart ached for her. Supporting her body, he comforted her, "Don’t worry, Rita. I’ll protect you, no matter what!"
Another man also showed deep concern, but there was already someone else by the woman’s side. For the sake of their survival, he had to activate his superpower and do his best to hold off the approaching zombie horde.
Unfortunately, he was just a "useless" Water Ability User. Although he had reached the Middle Level and could create water for his teammates to drink, he could also conjure a temporary water shield to help them dodge fatal attacks.
But they were too exhausted. At this moment, they were completely unable to use their superpowers to evade the attacks of the hundred-or-so zombies.
As for the other two, one was a middle-aged man in a straw hat. He had a superpower, but it was a useless Perception Ability with no offensive power. The other was a Level 3 Fire Ability User, but he had already exhausted his spiritual power on the road and couldn’t even conjure a single spark.
’What are we going to do?’ This was the deadliest crisis the five-person squad had ever faced.
Just as they closed their eyes, resigned to their fate, a massive net of lightning descended from the sky, trapping the entire horde of over a hundred zombies.
"Hey, you five! Get over here! What are you doing, waiting to die?"
Five’s voice was loud and clear, and he shouted excitedly toward the group of five.
The closer they got to Morhaven, the sooner he would see the woman he had been thinking about for the past ten days.
’For some strange reason, ever since he found out that Cynthia Grant was the one who had taken care of him after he disappeared, Five had been feeling... off. Logically, an adult’s love life shouldn’t be built on a foundation of gratitude.’
’But he just couldn’t resist the urge to be by her side. Even just seeing her would be enough.’
The five of them—Shawn Hale carrying Rita, along with the other three—walked over. Not since the beginning of the apocalypse had they encountered a group this large.
Moreover, some people in this group clearly had Combat Power that was off the charts. A Thunder Ability alone was something they had never seen before. What’s more, that single Thunder Ability had controlled over a hundred zombies, and the lightning net had finished off two-thirds of them.
Five finished off the remaining zombies in a flash with his Wind Blades. The group continued toward Morhaven, splitting open the skulls of the zombies on the ground to dig out the Crystal Cores before moving on.
When the five saw that the large group was heading uniformly toward Morhaven, Rowan Holden immediately spoke up to stop them.
"Don’t go any further! There are man-eating plants and lots of beasts over there that will attack people. A friend of ours died in the forests of Morhaven.
Besides, for some reason, it’s started raining in Morhaven, but I have a bad feeling about it. It’s too dangerous. Don’t risk it! Let’s go to Orinburg together!"
Lex Cross and his group ignored the man’s words and continued walking toward Morhaven. This left the five of them feeling both anxious and awkward.
"Shawn, Mr. Rain, what do we do? Should we go with them?"
Shawn Hale and Rowan Holden nodded in unison.
"We go! Those men look incredibly powerful! All those zombies were nothing to them, and the ferocious beasts in the forest will be no match for them either! We’ll follow them. We absolutely cannot get separated from this group!"
They didn’t bother to speak quietly, and Lex Cross’s group didn’t seem to mind them tagging along. And so the massive group continued—a mix of people with superpowers and ordinary people, special forces soldiers and researchers. Five and the others were even carrying various pieces of research equipment, large and small.
Night fell quickly. They were getting closer and closer to Morhaven.
They were still a few hours away, but looking toward Morhaven from a distance, they could see the sky above it was thick with dark clouds, as if it were a world apart, under a torrential downpour. Yet from within the city, which was enveloped in greenery, a vibrant glow of firelight faintly flickered, illuminating the path ahead.
"Boss, Morhaven is constantly glowing with firelight for some reason. I think we should keep moving. Something might have happened over there!"
Lex Cross nodded. No one was more desperate to reach Morhaven immediately than he was.
But the other personnel, who had been walking for the better part of the day, couldn’t take it anymore. They had made a long and arduous journey here, thinking they could go straight to Morhaven and settle in. Who knew that they wouldn’t be able to enter Morhaven and would have to spend a full day walking from Orinburg instead?
After a full day of this, they were tired and hungry. Having brought no food because they expected to arrive directly, they began to complain.
"Captain Cross, why don’t we rest here for a bit before we go on? Everyone’s exhausted!"
"Yeah, those of us with superpowers are doing okay, but the ones without will get sick if they keep walking!"
"Exactly! Captain Cross, how about you guys go get some food? We can leave after we eat."
Lex Cross gave a cold smile. "If you want to stay, you can stay here."
With that, Lex Cross led the way, taking the thirteen special forces soldiers with him. Nolan Jennings followed with Tilly Wallace on his back, and Gavin Todd trailed behind them. Just like that, they left, leaving the rest of the group staring at each other in dismay.
Chelsea Todd was panting with exhaustion. Although she was a Level 3 Water Element user, her only skills were creating and storing water. Her constitution was good, but she was not one to endure hardship. Used to being a pampered heiress, her physical stamina was naturally not as good as other Level 3 superpower users.
On top of that, she had been providing water for everyone along the way, which had consumed a lot of her spiritual power. She was genuinely starving.
"Five, wait for me." She hurried to catch up with Lex Cross’s team and grabbed Five’s hand. "Can we not be in such a hurry? I’m so hungry, Five."
Donovan Yardley had also been placed in the group by Titan Adler. He had been quiet and reserved the entire way, staying by Mason Adler’s side to protect him. Seeing Lex Cross and his men about to get away, he pulled Mason Adler up from the ground.
"Young Master Adler, we’re leaving with Captain Cross and his team."
