Chapter 416: Chapter 363: The Unreliable Golden Crow
"Chelsea, let me ask you something. When I woke up back then, I was at your house. Before I woke up, were you the one taking care of me the whole time?"
Chelsea’s expression faltered. Looking a little guilty, she immediately forced a laugh. "Who else would it have been? I’m the only child in my family!"
Five nodded, his expression still cold. "You came here looking for me?"
"Well, my dad sent me to ask if you all have time to come over for dinner." As she spoke, Chelsea started to fidget, her voice growing softer. "And also... about the two of us... Dad said it’s about time we... made a decision."
Five looked at Chelsea, the warmth he once had for her completely gone from his eyes. "No, we’re very busy lately. You should go back."
But Chelsea acted as if she hadn’t understood him at all. Instead, she grabbed Five’s arm and started acting coy.
"Five, where have you all been? I looked for you at the base all day!"
Five’s brow furrowed slightly as he pushed her hand away. "Chelsea, listen carefully. Thank your father for his kind offer on my behalf. But as for you and me... let’s just forget it."
It finally dawned on Chelsea that when Five said he was "busy," he was actually rejecting her. The color suddenly drained from her fair, innocent face.
"Five, why? D-Did I do something wrong? Why don’t you like me all of a sudden?"
Five’s expression was glacial. The atmosphere between them froze over, an iciness Chelsea had never felt from him before.
"Don’t say any more, Chelsea. Some things can’t be hidden forever. You should go. And don’t come looking for me again."
After saying his piece, Five went straight upstairs, leaving Chelsea standing alone in the living room in a daze.
Chelsea returned home, completely crestfallen. Her father, Liam Todd, and her mother, Wendy Joyce, weren’t there, but her aunt, Melissa Joyce, was. Seeing the tears welling up in Chelsea’s eyes, Melissa asked curiously.
"Weren’t you supposed to invite Lex Cross and Five over for dinner? Your father said now would be the perfect time to partner with Lex.
What about Five? You two should have settled your engagement a long time ago."
Hearing Melissa say this, Chelsea began to cry even harder.
"Auntie, Five... I think Five doesn’t like me anymore."
Melissa didn’t show the sympathy Chelsea expected. Instead, when she heard this, a faint smile played on her lips. "You should know perfectly well why Five put up with you for so long. What’s there to cry about?
Your parents will be back soon. If you can’t even handle a simple task like this, what good are you? I’m going back to my room to sleep. Don’t bother me."
As Melissa’s retreating figure disappeared, Chelsea felt even more wronged.
’My aunt used to dote on me! Why has she been like a completely different person since she came back from the quarantine zone? She’s always making sarcastic jabs at me, both openly and subtly. Sometimes she even sets traps just to watch me fall into them, amusing herself.’
’Why all these sudden changes?’
Chelsea couldn’t figure it out. She obsessed over it, replaying everything in her mind again and again, until she finally pointed the finger at one person.
Flora Bloom.
’My aunt has been at odds with me ever since she returned from the quarantine zone and lost her child. And back then, while my aunt was cooped up in there, besides all the other pregnant women, there was also that Flora Bloom!’
’Originally, there were no problems between me and Five. So how come as soon as this Flora Bloom shows up, Five suddenly doesn’t like me anymore?’
’It’s not very likely that Five found out I wasn’t the one who took care of him when he was injured after he disappeared, is it? The one who prepared the medicine at the time was Robin Grant. Robin was called away for an emergency, so he sent the injured, unconscious Five and the little girl who was caring for him to my house.’
She sucked in a sharp breath. ’That little girl... could it be Robin Grant’s granddaughter, Cynthia Grant?’
’But it’s been so long. Who would bother digging up the past just to prove something?’
She had never considered that Cynthia Grant was Robin Grant’s granddaughter. ’That girl seems so carefree and a bit ditzy. She doesn’t seem like the type to fuss over such things!’
Chelsea’s face flushed red as she mulled it over for a long time. In the end, she blamed all her misfortune and the recent changes on Flora Bloom.
’It must be Flora Bloom scheming behind my back and bad-mouthing me. Lex likes her, so Five has to listen to her!’
’Yes, that must be it!’
’No, I have to find a way to explain things clearly to Five!’
