Chapter 406 - 360: Threat in the Air
Chapter 406: Chapter 360: Threat in the Air
Flora Bloom’s superpower had been restored by absorbing the Energy Gemstone. But trouble comes in twos. Sure enough, just a few minutes later, another massive bird came charging at them.
Flora Bloom once again layered her water shields, consuming an entire Energy Gemstone just to block the massive bird.
’This can’t go on. Even though the Energy Gemstones are sustaining my spiritual power, they’ll eventually run out.
If a few more show up, I won’t be able to defend against them at all. The Crown Prince, Tanuki, where are we now? Can you find a place to land?’
The Crown Prince and Tanuki operated the plane’s instruments. A moment later, a BEEP sounded. "Flora, that’s Orinburg Airport right below us. We can land there. But getting from Orinburg to Morhaven by land will take a whole day."
"Right now, we’re in the air. One slip-up means the plane goes down, and we all die. Let’s land. If something goes wrong up here, we’ll be utterly helpless."
Cynthia Grant and the others in their seats were first thrown into a panic by the tilting of the plane. Just as they finally got used to it, the aircraft began to descend, gradually heading toward Orinburg Airport.
They opened the window shades. It would’ve been better if they hadn’t. To their astonishment, massive flocks of birds were flying right alongside them, at the exact same altitude.
In the cockpit, The Crown Prince, Tanuki, and Flora Bloom had noticed this as well. As the plane lowered its altitude, the surrounding airflow slowed down. However, this was also an altitude where many more birds and beasts could thrive.
Flora Bloom watched the birds and beasts flying parallel to the fuselage, so tense she held her breath, terrified that one of them might suddenly veer off course and make ’intimate contact’ with the plane.
Fortunately, it wasn’t until the plane landed smoothly on the empty tarmac of Orinburg Airport that everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief.
After the plane came to a complete stop, no one rushed to get off. Instead, The Crown Prince and Tanuki thoroughly checked the inside and outside of the plane. Only after confirming there were no issues did they open the cabin door.
For some reason, there were only two other planes parked on the tarmac. Outside these planes, only a few zombies dressed in airport staff uniforms were wandering about aimlessly.
The group disembarked onto an eerily quiet tarmac. The distant terminal, much like the one at Morhaven Airport, was crammed with a sea of zombies. However, inside a few VIP lounges, two Middle Level zombies that looked deceptively human were pressed against the full-length windows, their intelligent eyes seemingly fixed on Flora Bloom and her party.
Zombies should have gone wild at the scent of living flesh, yet this horde lacked that expected frenzy.
It seemed that every zombie, upon reaching the main entrance of the terminal, would instinctively recoil and shrink back inside.
Flora Bloom couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.
She stored their plane in her space. The Crown Prince and Tanuki then led her to the two empty aircraft, where they found a significant amount of aviation gasoline, kerosene, and jet fuel. Flora Bloom stored it all in her space.
After securing the supplies from the two planes, Flora Bloom made a point to observe her surroundings. Suddenly, she saw patches on the ground that were neither dried zombie brains nor dried blood.
The smell and the shape—white patches with brown flecks—were clearly bird droppings.
Moreover, the tarmac was covered in these droppings. Many were old and dried, but they were covered by fresh layers, indicating a continuous accumulation.
The group quickly dealt with the zombies scattered in twos and threes on the tarmac—three Level One and three Second Level zombies—and dug out six Crystal Cores.
"We need to get out of here. These bird droppings on the ground are giving me a bad feeling." Everyone agreed with Flora Bloom.
What they had just encountered in the sky had already given them a terrible premonition. It had been three months since the apocalypse. ’Are the skies becoming a threat now, too?’
Flora Bloom summoned Juggernaut. The group quickly climbed onto its back, and then Flora Bloom directed it to head toward Morhaven.
On the tablet Flora Bloom had wrangled from Azuregard City, the satellite signal was at full strength. It clearly showed that the area outside the airport was packed with vehicles, with motionless zombies inside or next to every single one.
If they tried to leave that way, not only would the vehicles block their path, but they would also likely be surrounded by zombies.
Luckily, they had the behemoth Juggernaut, which carried them as it smashed right through the airport wall and onto the main road. Its massive feet crushed the abandoned cars and zombies on the road, leaving them with no danger to speak of.
But just then, a strange CHIRPING came from overhead. A flock of sparrows, beating their tiny wings in unison, swerved through the air.
However, their destination wasn’t the group on Juggernaut’s back, but the zombie corpses the behemoth had just crushed.
Flora Bloom could sense that this flock of sparrows had not yet been touched by the virus; they still possessed the ordinary biological traits of their pre-apocalyptic kin.
’But what about the future?’
