These two kids’ faces were pristine, their posture steady, and their eyes shone with a strange, piercing clarity. However, Hector Vaughn quickly brushed the thought aside. He had no time to waste on minor anomalies.
"Hey! How did you escape?" Hector Vaughn demanded, stepping closer. "Return to your holding cell immediately! Otherwise..."
He deliberately paused, trying to loom over them to instil fear. Before he could finish his threat, however, the young girl interrupted him.
"Otherwise what?" Xiaohua asked innocently, blinking her large eyes and tilting her head to the side. "What are you going to do to us? I really want to know."
Hector Vaughn froze, stunned. He had certainly not expected a child to talk back to him like that. The two children standing before him were, of course, Xiaohua and Xiaoliu.
"You..." Hector Vaughn glared daggers at Xiaohua, trying to intimidate her with sheer malice.
Seeing the threat, Xiaoliu immediately stepped forward, positioning his small body directly in front of Xiaohua to shield her.
Hector Vaughn assumed the children had finally remembered their place and were growing frightened. A cruel smirk spread across his face, fully expecting them to yield to his commands. He could not have been more wrong.
"Xiaoliu, what should we do?" Xiaohua asked from behind his shoulder. "Should we put him to sleep too?"
"I don’t know." Xiaoliu replied calmly. "You should ask Master."
"Hmm..." Xiaohua nodded solemnly. "I will ask Master now."
Listening to their exchange, Hector Vaughn finally pieced the truth together. These two children were directly responsible for the state of his men. They were the ones who had somehow incapacitated the entire base.
"Hey, brats!" Hector Vaughn yelled, his temper flaring. "What did you do to my men?!"
Xiaoliu remained dead silent, staring back at Hector Vaughn with cold, indifferent eyes, as if the man standing before him wasn’t even worth an answer.
That look utterly infuriated Hector Vaughn.
"Don’t you dare look at me like that!" Hector Vaughn shouted.
He reached into his jacket, unholstered a handgun, and aimed it directly at the two children.
Xiaohua’s expression remained entirely unbothered. Xiaoliu’s eyes simply narrowed into razor-sharp slits.
Bang!
Hector Vaughn pulled the trigger. The gunshot crackled through the quiet compound. He expected to see blood spill onto the deck.
Instead, his eyes nearly bulged out of his head at what happened next.
The boy’s arm suddenly morphed. His limb elongated and twisted into something resembling a thick, woody vine. The branch shot toward a nearby tree and coiled tightly around a major bough. With a powerful, effortless contraction, Xiaoliu’s body was yanked into the air. At the exact same instant, his other arm whipped out, wrapped securely around Xiaohua’s waist, and swept her upward with him.
Bang!
The bullet struck the dirt harmlessly where they had been standing a fraction of a second earlier.
Hector Vaughn stood completely paralysed, his jaw slack. He could not process what his eyes had just seen.
"You..." Hector Vaughn stammered, his voice trembling. "You..."
For several long seconds, he could not form another word.
Then, a buried memory suddenly flashed through his mind.
One of MicroTech’s offsite research directives had focused on aggressive biological mutations and integrating foreign biological attributes into human hosts. They had run numerous trials on pediatric subjects. Most of those trials had been catastrophic failures. The subjects had either died from systemic shock, lost motor control, or developed monstrous, uncontainable mutations that necessitated immediate termination. Yet rumours had circulated about a pair of successful anomalies...
Hector Vaughn’s eyes widened in realisation. Could it be...? Are these two the successful prototypes?!
His heart beat wildly against his ribs. For a fleeting second, raw greed and excitement eclipsed his fear. The research under their purview had actually produced a miracle! It worked!
However, that surge of euphoria evaporated just as quickly as it had arrived. His expression soured as the reality of his current predicament hit him. The successful subjects had broken containment. Not only had they escaped, but they had also single-handedly neutralised every soldier on the island. If he could capture them right now, they would be priceless, far more valuable than all the data drives and research equipment currently being shredded underground.
Hector Vaughn tightened his white-knuckled grip on his pistol.
"Don’t think you’re getting away!" Hector Vaughn roared up into the branches.
"Xiaoliu..." Xiaohua peered down at him from her perch, blinking innocently.
"Hmm?" Xiaoliu responded.
"Do you think he still does not understand the situation he is in?" Xiaohua asked.
"I think he does not." Xiaoliu looked down at Hector Vaughn’s red face for a moment.
"Then should we teach him?" Xiaohua asked with a grin.
"Let’s wait for Master." Xiaoliu shook his head.
Hector Vaughn’s jaw twitched violently. He had no idea who this "Master" was. But one thing was painfully clear. These two children were far from ordinary test subjects. And if their Master was anywhere on this island, then the person who had silently brought down his entire operations base was already standing right behind him.
For the first time since the raid began, a chill of genuine horror settled into Hector Vaughn’s chest.
"Oh... Master is here." Xiaohua suddenly stated, looking off in a specific direction.
Hector Vaughn immediately whipped around to look where she was pointing. However, there was no one there. He narrowed his eyes. Was that brat trying to play him for a fool? He assumed Xiaohua had deliberately lied so he would turn his back, giving the two children an opening to bolt.
Hector Vaughn quickly snapped his head back around. To his utter surprise, the two children had not moved an inch. Neither Xiaohua nor Xiaoliu had tried to run.
