Chapter 1807: Chapter 1334: You’re Lying! (2)
Min Rui hurriedly explained, reiterating his point—he was being sincere. He was just about to face the college entrance exam; it wasn’t a life-and-death moment. There was no need for his family to make "sacrifices" for him. They didn’t even let themselves speak loudly or laugh at home.
"Alright, mom understands. Starting tomorrow, the house will go back to how it used to be."
After hearing Min Rui’s words, Kang Li didn’t need to think much to guess that it was the tense atmosphere at home that was putting invisible pressure on her eldest son. It wasn’t that he was personally stressed, but rather the family’s behavior that made him feel it. That wasn’t good.
Having realized this, Kang Li naturally had to make a change, to keep the family from being all tense and pressure Min Rui any further.
"Mom..."
"Hm?"
"I promise I’ll get good grades!"
"Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. When the time comes, just perform as normal, that’s enough."
"Okay."
Min Rui nodded, but what he was actually thinking was that he wanted to make his parents proud, to strive to become a top scorer on the college entrance exam, just like his parents hoped.
Of course, thinking was one thing, but as the exam approached, he knew he couldn’t relax on his studies. He had to prepare thoroughly, review solidly, and enter the exam room with a calm mind.
But nobody could have expected that, about twenty days before the college entrance exam, on a weekend evening, Min Rui was hurt by thugs on his way home from a classmate’s house because he stood up for justice.
When she got the call from the hospital, Kang Li’s heart tightened. She kept it from the elders and the kids at home and drove to the hospital by herself.
Comminuted fracture of the left arm, two broken ribs, already being wheeled into surgery. That’s what Kang Li learned when she arrived at the hospital.
"Aunt Kang, sob... I’m sorry, Brother Ming Rui was hurt by the bad guys while trying to save me..."
The girl sobbed and blamed herself. Kang Li’s face was cool, but her eyes couldn’t hide her anxiety and worry. She didn’t respond to the girl.
"Tong Tong!"
Hurried footsteps echoed from far to near. The newcomer was a man, someone Kang Li knew. His face was full of worry. As soon as he reached the girl’s side, he said, "Alright, stop crying, Daddy’s here!"
Casually soothing his daughter, the man turned to Kang Li. "Is Ming Rui’s condition alright?"
"Comminuted fracture of the left arm, two broken ribs, he’s in surgery right now. As for whether there are other issues, we’ll have to wait until the operation is over to know."
Kang Li glanced at him and responded casually.
"I’m sorry!"
The man gave Kang Li a deep bow.
But Kang Li moved aside and said, "I’ve already learned the basics of what happened. It’s not your daughter’s fault. My son was trying to do the right thing and was injured by the thugs."
Even as she said this, Kang Li deeply regretted not having driven to pick up Ming Rui from his classmate’s place, which led to the accident on his way home.
This needs explaining: a week earlier, Min Rui’s desk mate had had surgery for acute appendicitis. After being discharged, he couldn’t return to school right away to study, so he called Min Rui over, asking his desk mate to come to his house and help with a few questions.
Since the two got along well, Min Rui immediately agreed when he got the call, saying he’d go to his friend’s house that weekend—which was today.
No one expected that, as the two said goodbye in the late afternoon, Min Rui left his friend’s residential compound and, passing through an alley, saw a girl being dragged off her bicycle by three thugs—it was clear they intended her harm.
He recognized the girl as a classmate of Ming Han and Ming Wei, a little girl from the compound. There was even a good chance she was his half-sister. Of course Min Rui couldn’t just do nothing.
Fine, even if he didn’t know her, faced with something like this, Min Rui still couldn’t turn a blind eye. So he ran straight over, without a word, to rescue the girl.
The three thugs told him to mind his own business, or face the consequences.
Min Rui rebuked them harshly for their uselessness. When one of the thugs swung a fist at him, he didn’t hesitate and fought back.
At first it looked like the thugs didn’t have the upper hand. Unexpectedly, another thug joined in.
Min Rui had learned martial arts with Kang Li since he was young, and picked up a few moves from the Jiang Family’s bodyguards. He could easily handle two of them alone.
The problem was, there were three of them—and the third one had grabbed a stick about a meter long. It looked solid, he gripped it tightly, his face twisted, and he swung it hard at Min Rui’s head.
The move was so fast that Min Rui knew he couldn’t dodge. In desperation, he blocked with his left arm—with a "crack", his left arm was broken by the blow.
The girl—Xiao Tong—kept crying and screaming for help!
By the time people arrived at the entrance to the alley, Min Rui had already been beaten to the ground by the three thugs, blood at the corner of his mouth, protecting his head as best he could, enduring kicks from all three of them.
The people who responded to the call for help—seven or eight of them—came running from both ends of the alley. The three thugs realized something was wrong and tried to run, but they were all caught.
After learning the basics of what happened from the good Samaritan who brought Min Rui to the hospital, what could Kang Li say?
Say her own kid shouldn’t have tried to be a hero?
Obviously, that’s not an option.
After all, the kid’s values are right. If someone sees a bad guy bullying a girl and just pretends not to see it, walks the other way—from a personal standpoint, maybe it’s not exactly wrong, but from a moral perspective, it’s just too cold-blooded.
