Chapter 2005 - 2003: Envy
Chapter 2005: Chapter 2003: Envy
Gu Qiaoqiao then started telling Chen Lanxiu about Nie Luan’s situation.
She couldn’t say whether the two of them had really hit it off at first sight and would later just become ordinary colleagues, or maybe eventually walk toward each other—none of that was something Gu Qiaoqiao could predict.
But what she could do was tell Chen Lanxiu the things about Nie Luan that she was familiar with.
Including the fact that there was one-tenth Mystic Sect blood flowing in his veins.
And that his grandfather was Sect Leader Nie.
Of course, Gu Qiaoqiao wasn’t familiar with the other members in Archive Room No.1 at all—those would have to be handled by Chen Lanxiu herself—but even so, this was enough information for Chen Lanxiu to have a clear picture of Nie Luan in her mind.
However, she couldn’t sense any malice coming from Nie Luan.
All she felt was wave after wave of goodwill, just like from Gu Qiaoqiao.
But when it came to feelings, Chen Lanxiu was still a blank sheet of paper. The moment Nie Luan was mentioned, she couldn’t help blushing, and she didn’t dare meet Gu Qiaoqiao’s eyes.
Gu Qiaoqiao didn’t find it strange at all. This was perfectly normal—wasn’t it just like her and Qin Yize back then?
She had fallen for Qin Yize at first sight, and for many years she’d thought it was a one-sided crush. Only after seeing their past life in the Mysterious Dragon Box did she realize that Qin Yize had fallen for her at first sight as well.
Otherwise, with his temperament, he absolutely would never have agreed to take her as his wife. Even a debt of gratitude wouldn’t have been enough—he only agreed because he wanted to marry her himself.
The pity was that back then they had both been too young—one naïve and clueless to the dangers of the Mortal World, the other used to being cold-hearted and aloof, not understanding his own true feelings.
So in their previous life, that was why things had ended in such a tragic way.
Fortunately, she’d been given a chance to do it all over again, and this time everything came in time. They hadn’t missed each other, and now their life was very happy. The two of them together were both a couple who supported each other through thick and thin and lovers who were still very much in love.
But what she had with Qin Yize was something that couldn’t be copied. Everyone has their own fate.
So Gu Qiaoqiao looked at Chen Lanxiu with faint amusement, reached out and pinched her cheek, teasing as she said, "What’s with you, huh? How come the moment we talk about Nie Luan you turn this red? Didn’t you two just meet?"
Chen Lanxiu had no choice but to lift her head and meet Gu Qiaoqiao’s gaze.
Seeing the smile in Gu Qiaoqiao’s eyes—she clearly wasn’t that much older than her, yet for some reason, being with her gave Chen Lanxiu a strange sense of peace.
Though a little shy, Chen Lanxiu wasn’t like ordinary people—after all, she possessed a strange power, so her mind was naturally different.
So she quickly gathered her emotions and asked in a very soft voice, "Sister Qiaoqiao, do you believe in love at first sight?"
Gu Qiaoqiao nodded, her voice laced with a smile. "Of course I do. Xiuxiu, did you fall in love at first sight with someone?"
Even though Chen Lanxiu had gotten her emotions under control, under such a simple and direct question from Gu Qiaoqiao, her face flushed again.
Her hands twisted together, her head lowered, but she still answered honestly, "Sister Qiaoqiao, I have a really good impression of Nie Luan."
That was an indirect admission.
"Xiuxiu, Nie Luan is indeed good, and very outstanding. But his experience is a bit complicated, and for now the two of you are still in a superior–subordinate relationship. But feelings aren’t something that change according to your will, nor are they something you can control. Just follow your heart. As long as it doesn’t affect this job you have right now, or your future studies, then it’s fine."
Chen Lanxiu’s heart had been a little anxious, but when she heard Gu Qiaoqiao say this, her smile instantly curved, brows and eyes turning into little crescents, because she could tell Gu Qiaoqiao wasn’t strongly against it. That reassured her.
"I understand, Sister Qiaoqiao. It’s just something in my heart—no one knows what will happen in the future." Then Chen Lanxiu lifted her head again to look at Gu Qiaoqiao, and said a bit embarrassedly, "Sister Qiaoqiao, you absolutely can’t tell anyone about this."
"Don’t worry, your Sister Qiaoqiao won’t go around telling people."
"Sister Qiaoqiao, that’s not what I meant."
Chen Lanxiu grew a little anxious, her face flushing red. She did trust Gu Qiaoqiao, but she also felt there was something off about how she’d phrased it.
"Alright, alright, I know that is what you meant, and also kind of not what you meant. Anyway, I get what you mean."
Half-serious, half-joking, Gu Qiaoqiao bantered with Chen Lanxiu.
Chen Lanxiu quietly let out a breath of relief.
This kind of thing, it was enough just to know in her heart, so there was no need to bring it up again.
Besides, even she herself didn’t know how things would turn out in the future. They’d only just met; how could there be so many feelings? In fact, Chen Lanxiu calmed down quickly. At the moment, the two of them were upstairs chatting in the bedroom. Downstairs, Xiao Bao and Xiao Bei were playing with White Wolf, Xiao Bai had gone to Gu Garden on some matter, and Qin Yize was in the study dealing with official business.
After Gu Qiaoqiao and Chen Lanxiu went downstairs, what they saw was Xiao Bao and Xiao Bei playing together.
A trace of envy flashed through Chen Lanxiu’s eyes. She genuinely envied Xiao Bao and Xiao Bei for being able to grow up so happily. When she was little, she hadn’t been nearly that lucky.
Chen Lanxiu happily ran off to play with Xiao Bao and Xiao Bei.
And after watching from the side for a while, Gu Qiaoqiao headed to the study.
By then, Qin Yize had finished reading the last document, signed his name in bold strokes, closed it and placed it on another corner of the desk, where there was already a tall stack of files.
Gu Qiaoqiao said with some distress, "Ah Ze, you have to go through this many documents every day. You’re working so hard."
Qin Yize replied half-jokingly, half-seriously, "Yeah. I have to make money to support the family, support my wife, support the kids—of course it’s going to be a bit hard."
Gu Qiaoqiao smiled with narrowed eyes. "Giving you the chance to support a wife and kids—you should be feeling lucky about that."
Qin Yize hurriedly nodded. "Mm, my wife is right. An opportunity this good, I couldn’t get even if I begged for it. It’s not hard at all—I’d gladly swallow the bitterness like it’s sweet."
As he spoke, he kept tidying the desk. Gu Qiaoqiao pouted. "I can tell you’re not being sincere."
The study door was only half-closed, so you couldn’t see in from outside. Qin Yize’s gaze turned darker; he reached out, pulled Gu Qiaoqiao into his arms, and pressed her to his chest as he kissed her deeply.
Only after a long moment did he reluctantly let her go.
With a slightly hoarse voice, he asked, "Was I sincere this time?"
Leaning in his arms, Gu Qiaoqiao said lazily, "That’s more like it."
Qin Yize dropped another kiss on Gu Qiaoqiao’s forehead, and only then did the two of them sit down separately. Qin Yize reached out and smoothed his wife’s hair, asking in a low voice, "Did Chen Lanxiu go to Nie Luan’s place?"
Gu Qiaoqiao nodded. "She did. Everything went smoothly. She’s already signed the agreement. She’s now an official member of the archives, with a salary and benefits, and if she manages to get into university they’ll even cover her tuition."
"Those terms are really good. At the very least, it guarantees Chen Lanxiu’s living expenses for the next five years." Qin Yize felt that the conditions Nie Luan offered were indeed quite good.
