Chapter 856: Worth It
Chapter 856: Chapter 856: Worth It
"It seems Captain Zhang has more self-control than you."
Leng Yebai’s voice was somewhat cold, making it impossible to discern any emotion.
But only Leng Yebai knew that he was in a bad mood.
He possessed brainwaves, if only he had the immense strength of Captain Zhang, everything would be easily resolved.
He still felt too weak.
The sixth rank superpower was already ahead of most superpower users in the world, but he still felt it wasn’t enough.
He needed to become stronger, only then would his family be free from any threats.
This time, Captain Zhang risked it all, but what about next time?
Could it be the Base Commander, or perhaps Xiao Niu?
Leng Yebai slightly clenched his fist, and the purple lightning at his fingertips occasionally struck the beach.
The sound of sizzling arose.
"As the overall captain of the Human Survivor Alliance, he’s already done everything he could."
Aside from the Bai Family, Zhang Yiming rarely gave such high praise to anyone.
The two of them exchanged words, intermittently saying something else.
Suddenly, both of them looked in the same direction, then walked toward the sea.
In the unseen darkness, a black silhouette quickly surged up from the seabed, lying face-up in the water.
A humanoid body lay there motionlessly, allowing Zhang Yiming and Leng Yebai to pull him out of the sea.
"So, what bad things were you saying about me when I wasn’t around just now?"
A very hoarse voice came from within the humanoid body.
Weak, yet with a touch of cunning.
"We were praising you!"
Leng Yebai held the humanoid body with one hand, feeling the coldness all over it.
For a moment, he couldn’t tell if it was the cold seawater, the cold body, or the cold blood.
Everything seemed cold.
"Oh, thanks for the compliment."
The hoarse voice sounded again, expressing thanks without a hint of emotion.
For the first time, Zhang Yiming and Leng Yebai were this united; they carried the body swiftly to the shore.
"Sorry, you placed my arm the wrong way; please swap my left and right arms."
Captain Zhang lay on the ground, and in the darkness, only his extremely pale face could be seen, everything else was pitch black.
It was unclear whether it was due to the deep night or his body being stained with the zombie’s black blood.
Leng Yebai paused in silence and bent down to adjust Captain Zhang’s limbs.
After a while, he barely managed to assemble a human-like figure.
No one knew what Captain Zhang had gone through on the seabed, nor whom he had experienced such a tragic battle with.
Zhang Yiming and Leng Yebai only knew that the seabed had calmed down, and besides those old creatures hiding well in their nests deep down, the other giant zombie sea creatures were all—destroyed.
And the man who had caused chaos under the sea now lay on the ground, unrecognizable as a human.
The smell emanating from him was thick with decay.
His flesh was mangled.
Leng Yebai took out a crystal core from his pocket, placing it in Captain Zhang’s palm.
After a moment of thought, he placed the crystal core over Captain Zhang’s heart.
His arms were severely torn, completely unable to absorb the crystal core.
"Might as well put it in my mouth!"
Captain Zhang lay like a hogtied person on the ground, his voice very calm, only slightly hoarse, with no other emotions.
The beach beneath him had been soaked by the black blood flowing from his body.
Leng Yebai complied.
One by one, the crystal cores turned to dregs, and Captain Zhang’s broken body slowly returned to its original form.
Zombies possess a perverse yet powerful recovery ability.
When the sun shone on the beach again, Captain Zhang had already stood up.
His clothes were tattered, his arms and legs bare, but he looked clean, without a trace of filth.
His skin was even paler, and his overall demeanor appeared more sinister.
His gold-rimmed glasses had disappeared, and his scholarly aura was replaced by a sense of ferocity.
It wasn’t a deliberate display of ferocity, but an instinct buried deep in his bones.
It was identical to Zhang Yiming’s demeanor.
Standing together, though their appearances weren’t alike, one would get the feeling they were molded from the same cast.
Especially their demeanor.
"Seeing the sunshine is quite nice, it’s just a little regrettable, still not as good as you."
Captain Zhang lazily glanced at the sun, speaking without the slightest hint of regret.
He seemed unable to feel regret anymore.
Only a single obsession remained in his mind—to complete his unfinished mission.
Like a machine already destroyed, still clinging to life, fulfilling its duty.
"It no longer matters; this world hinges on your thoughts."
Zhang Yiming spoke calmly.
Among zombies, strength is compared through brainwaves.
Currently, Zhang Yiming is still the zombie with the strongest brainwaves, still the emperor among zombies.
But Captain Zhang also possesses powerful brainwaves, second only to Zhang Yiming, and has strong superpowers as well.
If Zhang Yiming and Captain Zhang truly fought, Captain Zhang might be able to suppress his fear and face Zhang Yiming.
It’s hard to say who would win.
This was why Captain Zhang initially dared to collaborate with Zhang Yiming.
He wasn’t afraid of Zhang Yiming reneging and going mad, as he could counterbalance this unknown factor with himself.
Of course, all of this hinges on Captain Zhang’s perfect self-control.
At the very least, now, he’s doing better than Zhang Yiming.
"Do you regret doing this?"
Leng Yebai looked at Captain Zhang, only to see his back.
Captain Zhang seemed a bit greedy for sunlight, taking two more steps east, already standing in the sea, yet unaware.
Leng Yebai felt he was very selfish; no matter what shape the world took.
As long as his family lived well in this world, he wouldn’t choose the same path as Captain Zhang.
He only wanted to stay by his family’s side, willing to risk his life for them, but not for the world’s survivors.
He had once become a zombie, but to him, it was a painful memory, meaning he had to part from Xiao Niu.
"Worth it."
Captain Zhang answered only with these two words and then said nothing more.
Alone, with no attachments, his powers were born for all superpower users.
The sound of a bus door opening was heard.
Captain Zhang slowly turned back toward the bus, taking a deep breath.
Damn!
It’s truly fragrant!
A wealthy family indeed! Even the scent is fragrant!
Captain Zhang took another deep breath, just as he intended to inhale again, Zhang Yiming stood before him.
His eyes carried a warning.
"Don’t be so petty, just taking a sniff, you’re too tense, hence overly cautious; it’s better to confront your instincts, sniffing isn’t illegal."
A slight wicked smile hung on Captain Zhang’s lips, but his eyes remained clear.
The more restrained he was, the stronger the instinctual backlash.
A single slip, and all would be lost.
Captain Zhang chose a different path than Zhang Yiming.
Taking a whiff for relief was still good; facing the bloodthirst could conquer the bloodlust.
