Chapter 1324: Crushing Expectations
’It seems she has her answer. To think she’d accept my words so readily—is it because she’s a mage?’
The average person would have tried their best to convince themselves that it was a misunderstanding. After all, it was not easy to accept a life changing truth. However, based on how Leah suddenly stopped speaking as if a harsh realization struck her, it meant that she was able to piece everything together in a single moment.
As someone who devoted their life to seeking knowledge and the pursuit of truths in magic, Leah had no choice but to accept what was uncovered.
After what felt like an eternity of lingering silence, Leah asked, "Is it possible to fix my magic circuits? As for the price—I am willing to use the reward granted to me by the Kroma Family."
Leah managed to somewhat gather herself; however, her face had lost some color from the shock and her expression was mostly devoid of energy and life.
"I’ve manipulated strands of magic before, but... Magic circuits are highly complex and delicate. It’s possible that I can fix it; however, there may be long term complications that I cannot foresee. Worst case scenario, your magic circuits may become damaged beyond repair." Izroth replied.
He added, "There’s also the possibility that whoever artificially arranged your magic circuits left hidden traps. It’s not something that can be taken lightly since they’re skilled enough to avoid the eyes of professors and elders at your academy."
It was true that Izroth had greatly expanded his knowledge surrounding magic. But, it was far from his area of expertise. Books and observation alone were not enough to truly master something. And, at the moment, Izroth’s magic theory far outweighed his current practical magic abilities.
Leah could not hide her disappointment. Right when she saw a path forward, it became riddled with dangers.
"...At the academy, students are divided into different ranks based on their mastery of spells. Most students start off at the lowest, Green-rank. But, those who already come from distinguished magic backgrounds usually start off one rank higher at Blue-rank. From there, it goes Yellow, Red, Purple and finally, Colorless. In order to graduate from Aeritentiam Academy, students are required to reach Yellow-rank." Leah said as she removed the wand from her side and held it forward, displaying the yellow symbol etched onto its base.
She then continued, "When I first entered the academy, I was given Yellow-rank. At first, people praised as a genius, but I ignored it. There was no shortage of people who tried to win me over. However, no matter grand I looked in their eyes, I knew the truth. None of them understood how much effort I put into standing where I am. Then, the second year started."
"There were still those who considered me a genius, but most had written me off as being simply talented. Then the third year came. I had turned from being a genius or someone talented, to a person who must have relied on underhanded means to achieve my rank. By the fourth year, I was given the nickname ’The Greatest Sage’. Not as a sign of respect, but rather because I was viewed as the greatest waste of talent in the School of the Great Sage." Leah said as she clenched her fists.
"Back then, I could not comprehend it. I was never prideful. I never called myself a genius. I never claimed to be talented. Yet, none of that mattered. Others decided to view me however they pleased and when I failed to meet their deluded versions of me, I became someone to be looked down on and mocked. It taught me a valuable lesson that I will never forget about people and about life. Do you know why I am telling you all of this? It is not for pity or sympathy. I want you to know the kind of life I have lived over these past few years."
"Even if the possibility of success if slim, just once—I want to silence all those who have looked down on me and crush every expectation they had of me and more. I want the nickname ’The Greatest Sage’ given to me as a form of mockery to transform into a new truth."
The more Leah spoke, the more clear the look in her eyes became, along with the determination in her voice. There was still a presence of sadness; however, Leah was already looking toward the future.
A carefree smile appeared on Izroth’s face.
’She hasn’t fully recovered from her shock, but she’s still looking ahead. That kind of mentality is not easy to come by. I thought about trying to solve it myself, but if she is showing this much determination... How interesting. I suppose I’ll have to ask for a favor when I pay a visit to Proximus.’
"I hope you keep that level of determination going forward. Since you seem serious about this, then I will lend you a hand in stepping above those who dared to look down on you. Of course, you must pay an appropriate price." Izroth said with a meaningful gaze.
Leah furrowed her brows. She was concerned that what she offered before was not enough. However, if even a reward from the Kroma Family could not satisfy Izroth, then Leah had no idea how she was supposed to come up with the proper funds.
"I do not have that much personal wealth, but I have managed to save up a bit... On top of the reward I would have received from the Kroma Family, I can also give you access to my research notes and-" Leah started; however, Izroth quickly cut her off.
Izroth held up his hand as he shook his head and said, "As I’ve said before, that is a reward you’ve earned. I am not so shameless as to take it from you as payment. And, when it comes to wealth, while I may not be able to compare to nobles like the Kroma Family, I won’t necessarily lose to those minor noble families. Instead, let’s make a deal. If I can introduce you to someone who can solve the issue of your magic circuits, after you graduate from the academy, I want you come work for me for three years. Of course, I will pay you appropriately and fund your research projects within the realm of reason."
Leah eyes widened in shock at Izroth’s offer. It was due to the terms he offered being far too generous for someone who held all the cards in his hands. Even if he wanted her to work for free, Leah would not be able to complain. After all, what was three years compared to the rest of her life?
However, Izroth was not someone so shortsighted. He could take advantage of Leah in her most vulnerable moment. But, this kind of approach was not one that Izroth enjoyed using. In the end, true loyalty was not something that could be forced.
In Izroth’s eyes, Leah’s potential was worth at least that much of an investment. Seeing as how she was able to reach her current level through her efforts alone, what would it be like if the one thing holding her back was removed? It would be like opening the flood gates!
Not to mention, Leah was the first resident of this world that Izroth came across who had the rank of "Hidden Rare". While Izroth did not know precisely what this meant, it was enough to catch his interest. Though, most importantly, Leah had a good head on her shoulders. And, her skills when it came to controlling mana were leagues above her peers.
"This... I am willing to accept. But, at the risk of potentially sabotaging my own interests, why are you giving me such favorable terms?" Leah asked curiously.
The logical part of her wanted to accept immediately before Izroth changed his mind. However, the mage part of her filled with curiosity could not help but ask the question that entered her mind.
"It’s true that you have potential. But, if I had to give a reason, it’s the look in your eyes. I respect it. For me, that much is enough. Of course, if you fail to prove your worth, I won’t hesitate to kick you out before the three years are over." Izroth said with a carefree smile.
Hearing that, Leah let out a soft giggle. However, the giggle swiftly ceased as her expression changed. The way she was feeling a moment ago, she thought it would be a long time before she ever felt anything positive. But, that deep emptiness seemed to be, although very slowly, being pushed back.
"Rest assured, I will do my best to ensure that I do not fail to meet your expectations. It will be a pleasure working with you, Supreme Elder Izroth." Leah said politely as she gave a slight bow.
"Just Izroth or Palace Master is fine. I look forward to working with you." Izroth replied casually.
