Chapter 1225: Chapter 1222 Evidence
Upon hearing this statement, the soldiers looked at each other in dismay, not expecting that the sickness was a sham and that there was a spy poisoning them from within.
“Three…” Chu Heng’s gaze slid across each person’s face, “two…”
His hand had already reached for the long sword by his side, his dark eyes betraying no emotion, suggesting he was certain of something.
“One…”
His final word fell.
A Soldier suddenly knelt down with a thud, “Lord Chu, spare our lives, how could we ever poison anyone?”
“You cannot harm the innocent. This vicious disease was caused by unclean drinking water, not poison that could create the same symptoms.”
Other soldiers also knelt down, begging for mercy.
With consecutive thudding sounds, in less than half an incense stick of time, nearly half of the soldiers had knelt.
Those still standing looked around in confusion and desperation, completely oblivious to what was happening.
Chu Heng ignored the kneeling soldiers, producing a prescription and a handful of brown rice, “This brown rice is what everyone eats daily, and it has been mixed with medicine. Before leaving the post station, I consulted with a local doctor and obtained proof.”
“A spy has infiltrated our ranks, poisoning the food we consume.”
“Conveniently, I had not mentioned this before and had been observing in secret, already having found evidence.”
“Bring the person here,” Chu Heng commanded.
The cook and another soldier were then brought forward.
The cook’s face turned pale with fright, as he kept kowtowing, “Lord Chu, I am wronged.”
“Go, take out the mosquito-repellent sachet from his waist,” Chu Heng ordered.
Zhang Ahai was the most eager. Being of humble origin, it was extremely difficult for him to stand out in the military camp. Now, having finally obtained a task, someone was sabotaging it secretly!
“Let go, or don’t blame me for getting rough,” Zhang Ahai, convinced that the cook was problematic, saw him protecting the sachet, reached over roughly, opened it to look, and his expression changed. He instantly reported back to Chu Heng, “Lord Chu, the cook indeed has an issue, the medicinal herbs in the mosquito-repellent sachet are all wet.”
He poured out the medicinal herbs, some damp herbs all mixed together and damaged significantly.
“Speak, were you hiding poison?” Zhang Ahai scolded angrily, glaring fiercely.
The cook argued, “Lord Chu, you are mistaken; the sachet just contains mosquito-repellent medicinal herbs. If Lord Chu does not believe me, let the doctor check,” he asserted.
“Really?” Zhang Ahai, seeing his utter lack of fear and full confidence, began to doubt whether he had actually misunderstood.
But Lord Chu would not speak rashly.
He subconsciously turned his head to look at Chu Heng.
Chu Heng’s gaze turned to the cook, who blinked and lowered his head, not daring to meet his eyes.
“The medicinal herbs indeed have no issues,” said Chu Heng indifferently.
The others were startled and even more perplexed.
Chu Heng stood up and reached for the sachet, “The problem, however, is with the sachet itself.”
Ignoring the cook’s shocked expression, he asked Zhang Ahai to fetch some clear water, dropped the sachet into it, and the originally clear and colorless water turned dark brown.
“Doctor Liu, come and verify this,” Chu Heng said, lifting the sachet out and placing it on the table.
Doctor Liu came over, and after inspecting for a while, he quietly said, “Lord Chu, this sachet has indeed been soaked in medicine for a long time, but whether it can cause the disease, I cannot determine right away.”
“Oh? Is that so?” Chu Heng continued, “Doctor Liu, how long will you need to verify it?”
The accompanying doctor stole a glance at him and, with trembling hands, gestured a five, “Five days will suffice.”
