Chapter 671 - 670: Perform More
Chapter 671: Chapter 670: Perform More
On Thursday morning, Yan Feifan spent over three hours at the Little Red House, where he successively completed puncture and injection procedures on two brain tumor patients.
At 12:30 in the afternoon, while he was having lunch in the Little Red House’s small cafeteria, he heard some distressing news from Yu Suye, who had made a special trip to see him.
Liao Ziqiang, Guan Zhe, and some of their good-for-nothing friends had gotten into an accident during a yacht party last night.
Yan Feifan asked in surprise, "A yacht accident?"
"Don’t tell me it was the one that capsized at the mouth of the Yangtze River in the early hours of the morning?"
Yu Suye affirmed, "That’s the one. It was the Guan family’s huge luxury yacht. They just bought it from Italy this year!"
"How do you know all this in such detail?" Yan Feifan asked warily.
Yu Suye shot him a look. "Feifan, don’t jump to conclusions. Liao Zili was the one who told me."
Without waiting for Yan Feifan to ask, she continued in a rush, "Guan Zhe got his family’s permission to invite a bunch of friends to party on the yacht..."
Yan Feifan cut in, "He must have invited plenty of girls, right?"
Yu Suye gave him another look before continuing, "In the middle of the night, for some unknown reason, the yacht collided with a freighter."
"Liao Ziqiang was badly injured, but his life isn’t in danger."
"As for Guan Zhe, he fell overboard and went missing. He wasn’t found until this morning, when he was rescued by a passing ship. They said he’s still breathing, so he’s alive."
Taking advantage of a pause in Yu Suye’s explanation, Yan Feifan pulled out his phone and scrolled through the latest news about the yacht accident.
The report said that divers had recovered two bodies from the overturned yacht; they already showed no signs of life.
Two others were still missing.
Yan Feifan sighed, put down his phone, and said, "You never know if tomorrow will come, or if an accident will first."
After a pause, he asked, "Have those two been transferred here? Do they want me to get involved?"
Yan Feifan couldn’t help but mutter to himself, "Those two scumbags. Finally come crawling to me for help."
"Feifan, you’re thinking too much!"
Suppressing a laugh, Yu Suye said, "Liao Zili specifically said that once the police are done with the accident investigation, both of them are being sent to Meilin Clinic for further treatment."
"They look down on the medical care available here in China, you know."
Yan Feifan scoffed, his face full of contempt. "The Liao Family are all a bunch of xenophiles. They forget where they come from the second a surgery is done."
Yu Suye said with a grin, "Liao Zili also mentioned that it’s not that they didn’t consider coming to you, but given the bad blood between you and his brother..."
"It’s not like they have no other options for treatment. They’re not about to walk in here voluntarily just so you can humiliate them and then fleece them for all they’re worth."
Yan Feifan chuckled. "I guess they’re self-aware, at least."
Then he changed the subject. "To be honest, even if their family came to me for help, I wouldn’t take the case."
Yan Feifan said with a straight face, "It’s not because I detest them, but because I need to manage my work and time more rationally."
"I avoid taking on messy, unnecessary cases whenever possible."
Yu Suye hmphed. "Speaking of work, Mrs. Chen said a volunteer for a penile reconstruction surgery is coming from the United States next week. Mrs. Zhong made the connection."
Yan Feifan nodded. "Get everything arranged and let me know in advance. I’ll clear my schedule."
Just then, Dr. Peng Zhanghua from the Department of Oral Surgery walked into the small cafeteria and sat down across from Yan Feifan.
"Dr. Yan, for the macroglossia correction surgery you’re performing this afternoon, would it be possible for me to act as your assistant so I can learn from you?"
Yan Feifan was taken aback for a moment, then quickly said, "Dr. Peng, you’re putting it too strongly."
He added with great seriousness, "Dr. Peng, I would welcome your supervision and guidance!"
Peng Zhanghua, however, was not one to stand on ceremony. He humbly replied with a sincere expression, "Dr. Yan, I wouldn’t dare presume to supervise or guide. I’m simply here to learn and observe."
After a brief pause, he added with feeling, "To be honest, Dr. Yan, I performed a macroglossia correction surgery this morning."
"That surgery was a test for me. It was a chance to apply the improvements I’ve been reflecting on these past few days, after the two eye-opening experiences you gave me."
"And I have to say, I feel it was the most successful macroglossia correction surgery I have ever performed."
Peng Zhanghua clasped his hands together in a gesture of respect. "Dr. Yan, you’ve given me a moment of true clarity, like the fog suddenly lifting."
"Thank you!"
Yan Feifan replied humbly, "You’re too kind! I really don’t deserve such praise."
"Dr. Peng, that’s only because your own accumulated experience is so profound. You were already at a tipping point, ready for a breakthrough. That’s the only reason my insights could have such an eye-opening effect."
Peng Zhanghua chuckled. "Dr. Yan, there’s no need to be so modest. I’m well aware of what the reality is."
"I often discuss surgical plans with my colleagues, and I regularly attend observation seminars."
"None of them have ever given me this kind of jolt..."
Sitting beside Yan Feifan, Yu Suye beamed as she watched him squirm uncomfortably under the constant praise and thanks. A wave of pride washed over her, as if his glory were her own.
’That’s my man,’ she thought.
Yu Suye interrupted the still-talking Dr. Peng. "Dr. Peng, Feifan hasn’t finished his lunch yet."
"Feifan performed two puncture and injection procedures for brain tumors this morning, and he needs to rest for a little while after lunch."
Dr. Peng quickly stood up. "My apologies, I got carried away with my excitement."
"Dr. Yan, please, finish your meal!"
"I’ll handle all the preoperative preparations for the American girl..."
After finishing lunch, Yan Feifan returned to his office and lay down on the sofa to rest.
Yu Suye sat quietly beside him, keeping him company.
"Feifan, just rest. I’ll wake you up when it’s time."
Yan Feifan urged her, "You don’t have to stay. Your afternoon work hours are about to start."
"And don’t worry about me oversleeping. Someone will come get me."
Yu Suye looked at him pointedly. "I just want to spend more time with you."
Seeing that Yan Feifan was about to speak again, she ordered, "Not another word. Close your eyes and get some rest! Now."
Yan Feifan obediently closed his eyes...
About ten minutes later, Yan Feifan was woken up by a phone call.
The call was from Liang Qing, the vice president in charge of medical affairs, who had been transferred from City First Hospital.
"Dr. Yan, you’re aware of the yacht that collided and capsized at the mouth of the Yangtze River this morning, right?"
"I saw the news online," Yan Feifan replied curtly.
The words had barely left his mouth when Liang Qing’s voice sounded from the phone.
"A friend’s child was one of the victims. His physical injuries aren’t serious, but he’s in a deep hypoxic coma from the drowning."
"Dr. Yan, I hear you’re heading a research project on waking patients from vegetative states, is that right?"
Yan Feifan explained, "Mr. Liang, my project has not yet reached the clinical trial stage with human subjects."
He added, "Right now, the project’s main focus is on waking patients in deep comas due to brainstem damage. We have not yet begun to address hypoxic comas."
Mr. Liang said, "Oh," over the phone, then changed tack. "Dr. Yan, perhaps there’s still some uncertainty about the exact cause of my friend’s child’s coma."
"Quite a few people were injured in this yacht accident."
"How about this, Dr. Yan—you’re a famous genius doctor, after all. You can lead a small medical team over there to provide assistance."
"It’s a case of ’when disaster strikes, help comes from all sides.’ Plus, you’ll get some media exposure and generate a little publicity for the hospital."
Hearing this, Yan Feifan grimaced.
’This accident, counting the injured and the missing, involves just over ten people.’
’A patient load of this size is more than enough for any single tertiary hospital to handle. Why would they need assistance from another one?’
’This Mr. Liang really knows how to chase a trending topic.’
"Mr. Liang, I have a surgery scheduled for two o’clock this afternoon. You’ll have to arrange for someone else to go."
Mr. Liang persisted. "Sending another doctor won’t have the same newsworthy impact as you going, Dr. Yan."
"Dr. Yan, you’re a recipient of First- and Second-Class Merit medals! At critical moments like this, you need to step up and be seen."
Yan Feifan gave a short, sharp laugh. "Mr. Liang, I didn’t earn my medals by putting on a show."
"I need to start preparing for my surgery now."
"Mr. Liang, that will be all."
Then, without waiting for a response, Yan Feifan ended the call.
