Chapter 665 - 664: An Endless Stream

Chapter 665: Chapter 664: An Endless Stream

Pan Jichuan walked out of Yan Feifan’s office in the Little Red House feeling as if he were in a dream.

’Did my wish really come true so easily? Did I actually succeed in becoming his student?’

His original plan was to create and seize every possible opportunity to gradually strengthen his relationship with Yan Feifan, playing the long game.

Once the time was right, he believed he could seamlessly transition to studying under Yan Feifan.

But as they say, things never go according to plan.

This morning, news that Yan Feifan had taken on a student broke out of nowhere, and Pan Jichuan couldn’t sit still any longer.

He knew all too well how many people, both openly and secretly, had their sights set on Yan Feifan.

Now that the floodgates were open, he figured that anyone with even a shred of connections would be rushing in.

If he waited until he’d properly established a relationship with Yan Feifan, he wouldn’t just have trouble getting a foot in the door; there wouldn’t even be standing room left.

In his desperation, Pan Jichuan threw caution to the wind.

He handed off his work, rushed to Yan Feifan’s office, and stammered out his admiration and his wish to be taken on as a student.

To his surprise and delight, Yan Feifan tossed him a few rubber tubes, had him demonstrate several vascular suturing techniques, and then agreed to his request without any hesitation.

Pan Jichuan was ecstatic, unable to believe his luck.

He had been prepared to be rejected and had been ready to play the part of a spurned but devoted admirer for the foreseeable future...

As he walked out of the Little Red House, his excitement beginning to subside, Pan Jichuan looked back up at the building’s ninth floor.

He now understood why Yan Feifan had asked him to demonstrate the vascular suturing techniques.

It was to confirm whether his suturing skills had improved significantly since the last time he’d asked for guidance.

Pan Jichuan felt a wave of relief.

’Thankfully, I put in the hard work, did more than enough practice, and corrected the issues Yan Feifan pointed out.’

’Otherwise, I wouldn’t just have been turned away this time; I would’ve lost any future chance of being accepted.’

This little test taught Pan Jichuan that from now on, he had to meticulously carry out any task Yan Feifan assigned him.

And if he couldn’t do something, he shouldn’t lie about it.

Yan Feifan’s photographic memory was no exaggeration. He could use some trivial detail to check if you were a person of your word.

"AHHH..."

Pan Jichuan let out a sudden, loud cry, releasing the irrepressible excitement surging through him. Ignoring the startled looks from passersby, he broke into a run, heading for the general surgery department...

What Pan Jichuan didn’t know was that Yan Feifan had readily agreed to take him on as a student for several reasons. His patient efforts had not been in vain and had left a good impression, his own skill level was decent, and he was clearly hardworking. But beyond all that...

The most important reason was that Yan Feifan didn’t want all his students to be the result of deals or recommendations from others.

Simply put, Yu Beihua, as well as the students recommended by Chen Yu and Qiu Ge, had all been foisted upon him.

Although Yan Feifan had agreed, he was still a little peeved about it.

’Damn it,’ he thought, ’I don’t even have the freedom to choose my own students.’

Pan Jichuan’s proactive arrival at his doorstep couldn’t have come at a better time...

At noon, Yan Feifan was having lunch with Yu Suye and Yu Beihua in the main staff cafeteria.

"Is your paperwork all sorted out?"

Yu Suye shook her head. "I just filled out a form at HR. Apparently, it still has to go through some approvals and a review process."

"But Xiaohua’s paperwork for his advanced studies is all done."

Yan Feifan hummed in acknowledgment and said to Yu Beihua, "I’m going to be busy for the next few days. Why don’t you start as my assistant so we can get to know each other."

Yu Beihua quickly nodded. "Okay."

Yan Feifan then looked at Yu Suye. "At eleven-thirty, the political commissar of the Binjiang Military District came to my office. He apologized and said they had mishandled the villa situation, causing me undue trouble."

"He said the issue is resolved now, and we can live in the villa without any worries."

"He also said if anyone else is foolish enough to cause trouble, I should call him directly, and he’ll take care of it."

Yu Suye was delighted to hear this.

She had really fallen in love with the villa’s location and surroundings, so she was overjoyed that the issue was resolved.

"Feifan, did the commissar say what exactly happened with the university?"

Yan Feifan smiled. "He said he went to Binhai University with his colleagues from the municipal government this morning to demand an explanation."

"The university’s explanation was that it was the action of ’an individual comrade with low political and ideological awareness who presumptuously misinterpreted the leadership’s intentions.’"

"It was a personal mistake."

Yu Suye couldn’t help but chuckle. "An assistant to the president... isn’t their administrative rank equivalent to a vice president?"

"How can someone at that level still have ’low awareness’?"

Yu Beihua quietly explained, "Aunt, the administrative rank of a presidential assistant is usually on par with a department head, one level below a vice president."

"In a high-level appointment, they can be on par with a vice president."

"However, the presidential assistant is usually the president’s confidant and is involved in managing core affairs, so the position is no less important than a vice president’s."

After a pause, Yu Beihua added his analysis, "The university leadership’s statement clearly means they’re throwing this presidential assistant out as a scapegoat."

"It’s also possible that this assistant really did want to take a gamble to make a name for himself."

"Or maybe, the guy was set up."

Yan Feifan shot Yu Beihua a look. "Let’s not waste our energy analyzing this messy business."

"However Binhai University handles this, it’s fine as long as it doesn’t affect us anymore."

’Treating patients and performing surgery is so much simpler...’

’A patient’s problem is objective. All we have to do is find it and solve it effectively.’

Yu Beihua quickly buried his head in his food and said no more.

After they finished eating, Yu Suye asked, "Feifan, should we go to the finance department to check on your sister?"

Yan Feifan shook his head. "There’s no need."

"I video-chatted with my sister before coming to the cafeteria. She said her sprained ankle is much better and she can get around fine with one crutch."

"She ordered takeout for lunch..."

When Yan Feifan returned to his office in the Little Red House with Yu Beihua, he was surprised to find Lv Xing, the daughter of the vegetative patient from Jingcheng, waiting for him in the hallway.

"Has there been a change in your father’s condition?"

Lv Xing quickly explained, "Mr. Yan, there’s been no change in my father’s condition. It hasn’t gotten better, but it hasn’t gotten worse either."

"It’s just..."

Lv Xing said cautiously, "I heard a rumor... that the vegetative patient who woke up has taken a turn for the worse."

Yan Feifan led Lv Xing into his office and admitted frankly, "What you heard is correct. That patient’s brain function has begun to degenerate due to secondary damage to other parts of the brain caused by the experimental treatment."

"At present, we haven’t been able to halt this degenerative trend."

Lv Xing asked worriedly, "Mr. Yan, then... then..."

Yan Feifan explained, "We are in the process of refining the experimental therapy, and we have developed a clear and promising improvement."

"It’s currently undergoing further verification trials."

Seeing the deep worry on Lv Xing’s face, Yan Feifan said, "Since it’s an experimental therapy, there’s a significant amount of uncertainty and risk involved."

"We expect to receive approval for clinical human trials within the next week or two."

"Lv Xing, if you’re willing to take the risk, you can bring your father to the hospital next week to participate in our clinical trial."

"If you’d rather play it safe, you can wait until our research yields conclusive results, and then decide what to do based on the circumstances..."

After sending off the deeply conflicted and worried Lv Xing, Yan Feifan tossed a tablet to Yu Beihua.

"This has the files for all my patients this week. Familiarize yourself with them."

Yan Feifan then tossed his phone to Feng Jian in the outer office.

"Unless it’s a life-or-death emergency, if anyone calls for me, tell them I’m busy."

All morning, it had been one person after another looking for him, or his phone ringing off the hook.

Most of the callers were people he barely knew, all eager to invite him out for a meal or tea without getting to the point.

Yan Feifan had no intention of wasting his afternoon the same way.

His hopes were high, but reality was harsh.

All afternoon, a steady stream of people came looking for him at his office... It was an endless procession.
