Chapter 636 - 635: My Mind Is Made Up
Chapter 636: Chapter 635: My Mind Is Made Up
They always say, "Just this once." If this had been Xv Fang’s first mistake, Yan Feifan might have given him another chance on account of his previously good performance. That wouldn’t have been out of the question.
The problem was, this was his second mistake.
As for the promise to never practice medicine again, Yan Feifan scoffed. He didn’t believe it for a second.
After all, getting fired over the euthanasia incident hadn’t been enough to make him learn his lesson and act with caution.
A mere promise would keep him away from hospitals and away from practicing medicine?
Yan Feifan didn’t believe it.
In his view, only a sufficiently harsh punishment would make Xv Fang realize the gravity of his errors and learn the difference between right and wrong.
More importantly, being repeatedly asked to take the fall made Yan Feifan feel coerced, and he was deeply uncomfortable with it.
He looked Miao Quan in the eye and asked, "Teacher, did Xv Fang’s parents ask you to come see me?"
Miao Quan said with a hint of shame, "Mr. Xv is quite accomplished in neurology. He’s helped me solve some difficult cases in the past."
"Besides, if this whole thing blows up, the fallout will be widespread. It could easily drag a lot of people down."
Miao Quan humbled himself and pleaded, "Feifan, this time, just do it as a favor for me!"
Hearing this, Yan Feifan sighed in disappointment. "Just as I thought. That phone call this evening was to ask for a favor."
He added with contempt, "If you’re going to ask for a favor, just ask. Why dress it up in such high-and-mighty language? So hypocritical."
Noticing Miao Quan’s confused expression, Yan Feifan briefly recounted the phone call he had received from Xv Jiande that evening.
After a moment of silence, Miao Quan said slowly, "It’s true, Xv Fang’s mother has been the one in constant contact with me."
"But for Mr. Xv to claim he didn’t know, and even to take the moral high ground by claiming he’d disown his own son for the sake of justice... that’s just ridiculous."
Yan Feifan went over the whole situation in his mind again and seized upon a key point.
"Teacher, does this Mr. Xv want to become an academician that badly?"
Yan Feifan continued, "His ultimate goal in having me take the fall to protect his son is to stop this from affecting his academician election."
Miao Quan sighed with a mix of emotion and longing. "You could say that becoming an academician is the highest honor a scientific professional can achieve in this country. Society has attached a great deal of prestige to the title."
"Mr. Xv..."
Miao Quan shook his head and sighed softly. "He’s facing the final hurdle now. The coronation of his life’s work is right in front of him. It’s understandable that he might lose his composure and act irrationally for a moment."
Yan Feifan snorted sarcastically.
He, too, had great ambitions of becoming an academician.
But with the previous example of Academician Hao Junpeng from the Affiliated Hospital and his misconduct and neglect of his students, and now Xv Jiande’s hypocrisy and willingness to cover things up, Yan Feifan’s reverence for the title had diminished considerably.
Seeing that Yan Feifan still hadn’t given an answer, Miao Quan continued to persuade him, "Feifan, I know you’re reluctant and angry, but that’s just how society is. You’ll always run into situations where you feel helpless, where you have to compromise, make trade-offs, and exchange favors."
He then tried to entice him, "As long as this incident passes smoothly, Feifan, you will earn the gratitude and friendship of Mr. Xv and many people at Union Medical College Hospital."
"Since they work in Jingcheng, they’re in a prime position and have very close ties with the National Health Commission."
"In the future, Feifan, your research projects, funding, and honors will come in a steady stream..."
"Teacher..."
Yan Feifan cut him off bluntly, "Teacher, do you think I’m someone who needs connections and special treatment to get research projects, R&D funding, and honors?"
Miao Quan was slightly taken aback and said awkwardly, "Well, with your talent, Feifan, you naturally don’t need any special treatment."
"It’s just that having people looking out for you can save you some trouble and make things go more smoothly."
After a pause, Miao Quan tried again, "Feifan, you’re still young. Taking a small loss now will definitely pay off in the long run."
"You have to give before you can take. When you need help in the future, you’ll naturally receive strong support from many sides."
"Feifan, you can’t guarantee that your own career won’t hit a rough patch, that you won’t run into problems or make mistakes, can you?"
Well...
Yan Feifan felt that what he was saying made a lot of sense, but he also had a nagging feeling that something wasn’t right.
He shook his head hard, then raised a hand to stop Miao Quan from continuing.
Yan Feifan sorted through the information in his mind one more time, clearing his thoughts.
"Teacher, there are two solutions to this problem."
"One is that I take the fall."
"Two is that Mr. Xv voluntarily withdraws from the academician election."
Yan Feifan analyzed, "If Mr. Xv issues a statement and voluntarily withdraws from the election because of his son’s mistake, not only would his reputation remain intact, he might even gain some sympathy."
"His rivals wouldn’t be able to keep hounding him over it, and this whole affair with Xv Fang would quickly die down."
"Mr. Xv could lie low for a few years, focus on his research, and his chances of making a comeback would be even greater, with no lingering issues to worry about."
Yan Feifan’s analysis was so logical that he even managed to convince himself.
"Teacher, this solution is much more sound. There’s no way you didn’t think of it, yet you’re still pushing so hard for me to take the fall."
"Your intentions..."
Miao Quan was silent for a moment before saying, "He’s worried and afraid. He’s already done so much preparatory work and feels he has a strong chance in this election."
"In a few years, too many things could change."
"Feifan, when you get to our age, you’ll understand. You only get one or two life-changing opportunities."
"If you don’t seize them, you miss them for a lifetime."
Yan Feifan nodded with a degree of understanding, then suddenly asked, "Teacher, what does Xv Fang himself think about this?"
"He..."
Miao Quan shook his head. "He did say that a man should take responsibility for his own actions, but what he thinks now doesn’t matter."
"His mother has already rushed to Binhai..."
Miao Quan didn’t finish that thought, changing the subject instead. "Feifan, if you take the blame for this, with your current medical achievements and future prospects, you’ll get a slap on the wrist at most—a public notice of criticism or some minor disciplinary action."
"And the benefits you’d gain are obviously immense."
"Feifan, why are you so resistant to this?"
"Can’t you just swallow your pride for once?"
"In a way, you could consider Xv Fang half a student of yours."
Miao Quan then goaded him, "Feifan, that incident a while back, where the electrical stimulation caused that at-fault driver to die from a grand mal seizure... I know for a fact that many people at the hospital, from top to bottom, took considerable risks to cover that up for you."
"So how is it that when it’s your turn, you’re unwilling to make a small sacrifice for others?"
"Feifan, you can’t just enjoy the protection of others and be so selfish that you give nothing back, can you?"
"I’m selfish and don’t give anything back?"
Yan Feifan, who had been feeling a weight on his chest this whole time, suddenly felt his temper flare.
"Teacher, since the day I woke up and returned to work, has there been a single day I haven’t been studying and working my fingers to the bone?"
"I may have made mistakes, but I can say with a clear conscience that I’ve never done anything that I regret or that goes against my principles."
"But this thing today..."
"Being asked to take the fall... it just doesn’t sit right with me."
Yan Feifan stood up from his seat, his voice rising considerably.
"I know many people at the hospital, including you, Teacher, have looked out for me and given me a lot of leeway. But I’m certain of one thing: it’s because I’ve always been doing the right thing, or at least walking the right path."
"If I were to go astray, I imagine you all would bring the hammer down on me, not shield me the way you’re shielding Xv Fang right now."
After a pause, Yan Feifan added furiously, "Xv Fang is a ticking time bomb."
"If he isn’t punished this time, with his personality, he’ll probably get someone killed one day."
"And when I hear that news, I will regret it for the rest of my life."
"And Xv Jiande—he’s so focused on the trivial pursuit of the academician title that he’s lost sight of what’s important. He’s hypocritical and indulgent, and he doesn’t prioritize medical research. He doesn’t deserve to be an academician."
The more he spoke, the clearer his thoughts became. Yan Feifan looked at Miao Quan, who was about to speak again, and said, "Teacher, my mind is made up."
"If you try to persuade me again, I won’t call you ’Teacher’ anymore..."
