Chapter 562 - 561: Big Trouble

Chapter 562: Chapter 561: Big Trouble

Feeling stirred up, Zeng Ni, Yan Feifan, and the others found a nearby coffee shop and settled into a secluded booth.

They each ordered a drink. After the server left, Zeng Ni impatiently checked her bank account on her phone again.

"It hasn’t come through yet. Mr. Han said it would take two hours at most, so it looks like we’ll have to wait about another hour."

Zeng Ni patiently tried to reassure both the others and herself. Then she added thoughtfully, "As soon as the money comes in, Hai Zi, Rongrong, Xuenong, I’ll pay you back the 1.42 million you all chipped in."

"By the way, how much did you all sink into that shop in total?"

Xu Yanhai, Sun Xuenong, and Shang Xiaorong exchanged a glance, then sheepishly blurted out their numbers.

"Mrs. Zeng, I lost 1.26 million."

"1.18 million!"

"I lost the most—1.55 million."

Zeng Ni sighed softly, her voice tinged with self-reproach. "It looks like none of you could resist the temptation and used up all three chances. It’s all my fault."

"I’ll cover it."

She picked up her phone again, opened the calculator app, and mumbled as she typed, "Okay, 12.8 million minus 1.42, minus your 1.26, 1.18, and 1.55, then minus my 1.64 million... that leaves..."

"5.75 million."

Zeng Ni looked at Yan Feifan and smiled. "Feifan, we were only able to get our money back from that shop because of you. It’s all thanks to you."

"This has also been a valuable lesson for us. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, just traps set by other people."

"Feifan, the remaining 5.75 million is all yours."

Yan Feifan waved his hand in refusal. "Zeng Ni, I’ve already gotten my reward. I got two jade rings worth over ten million for less than a tenth of their price."

"I can’t take this 5.75 million."

Zeng Ni insisted, "Feifan, without your skills, we wouldn’t have gotten a single cent of our money back."

"We can’t be greedy. The extra money should be yours..."

Xu Yanhai, Sun Xuenong, and Shang Xiaorong chimed in, agreeing that they were already overjoyed just to get their money back.

After some back-and-forth, Yan Feifan finally agreed to accept 1.42 million.

This meant he effectively spent nothing and got two top-tier jade rings worth over ten million for free.

Zeng Ni, Xu Yanhai, Sun Xuenong, and Shang Xiaorong split the remaining 4.33 million, with each person getting 1.08 million.

Zeng Ni gave the last 10,000 to Duan Yu as a celebratory red envelope.

With the money distributed and everyone happy, the group chatted over their coffee and tea while waiting for the transfer to complete.

About ten minutes later, seven men flooded into the coffee shop and walked straight toward the booth where Yan Feifan and Zeng Ni were sitting.

The man in the lead, who looked to be in his thirties, was sharply dressed in a suit and had his hair slicked back.

Following closely behind him were six able-bodied young men, all wearing tight-fitting black or camo T-shirts.

Seeing the group striding toward them with obvious ill intent, Duan Yu quickly stood up, took two steps forward, and blocked their path.

Yan Feifan, Zeng Ni, and the others also rose from the booth, their expressions wary and on guard.

"Dr. Yan Feifan..."

The slick-haired man met Yan Feifan’s gaze and said with a humorless smile, "My boss was quite astonished by your... confident performance. He sent me to invite you for a chat."

"I do hope you’ll indulge us, Mr. Yan."

Zeng Ni answered for Yan Feifan, "And what if he doesn’t want to?"

The slick-haired man shot Zeng Ni a look before turning his eyes back to Yan Feifan. He chuckled. "My boss’s orders were to be sure to bring Mr. Yan. As a subordinate, I naturally have to do whatever it takes to complete the tasks my boss gives me."

"So please, Mr. Yan, don’t make this difficult for me."

Zeng Ni shot back without yielding an inch, "What if we do make it difficult? What are you going to do about it? This is Jingcheng, and we’re not just some ordinary folk you can push around."

"If you dare to try any dirty tricks, even ten Yu Yuan Workshops won’t be enough to save your boss from the fallout."

The slick-haired man dug his pinky into his ear, a mocking tone in his voice. "Miss Zeng, we live in a society governed by laws. We’re a legitimate company. You shouldn’t be thinking of us as some kind of gang."

"It’s just that..."

His expression suddenly turned vicious, and he glared at Yan Feifan once more.

"What we cannot tolerate is being played for a monkey."

"A single glance and a casual pick, and you hit the jackpot. If it were just once, fine. We could write it off as dumb luck, a blind squirrel finding a nut. We’d just bite the bullet and take the loss."

"But three times in a row? Are you really playing us for three-year-olds?"

"This is absolutely intolerable!"

The slick-haired man’s face was a mask of fury. He jabbed a finger at Yan Feifan’s nose and snarled, "You’d better come clean and tell me exactly what kind of cheating trick you used."

"Then you’re going to spit back out every last thing you took from us."

"Or else..."

The slick-haired man’s voice dropped to a sinister threat. "Society is progressing, the rule of law is progressing... but all sorts of accidents still happen, one after another."

"A random car accident, slipping on a banana peel, a flower pot falling off a roof on a windy day..."

"Mr. Yan, I’d be willing to bet that if you don’t confess and cooperate, you and your family might just run into one or two of these ’accidents.’ Or maybe more."

The man’s words made Yan Feifan’s expression turn terrifyingly dark, so grim it looked like thunderclouds gathering.

’I knew it,’ he thought. ’I was too flashy, too arrogant back at Yu Yuan Workshop. Of course, they’d get suspicious.’

But for them to skip any investigation and jump straight to threats—especially threats against his family—that crossed a line for Yan Feifan. It was a fatal mistake.

A flicker of fear went through him, but it was instantly consumed by a surge of killing intent.

He shot the slick-haired man a piercing glare, then took out his phone and dialed a number.

The call connected quickly, and a woman’s voice came over the line.

"Mr. Yan, it’s a rare pleasure to get a call from you. Is there something you need me to handle?"

Yan Feifan had called Wen Ning, the assistant to the director of the PLA General Hospital.

"Mr. Wen, I’m in Jingcheng, and my personal safety is under serious threat. I’d also like to use this incident to gauge just how much weight I carry, to see how important I am to you people."

"I’m leaving this in your hands."

The slick-haired man watched Yan Feifan make the call, a disdainful sneer on his face.

"Go on, make your calls. Call whoever you want. Call a few more people while you’re at it."

"There’s no situation our boss hasn’t seen. The names of the powerful people he knows would be enough to scare you to death."

Yan Feifan didn’t even glance at him, continuing into the phone, "I want to see just how thoroughly you can handle this."

The words had barely left his lips when Wen Ning’s voice came back instantly from the phone.

"Mr. Yan, rest assured. I’ll contact the Chief to handle this immediately."

"What’s your location?"

Yan Feifan gave her the coffee shop’s address and ended the call.

He met the slick-haired man’s gaze and said coldly, "Now we’ll see whose connections are stronger—your boss’s, or mine."

"But I’ll tell you this much: after the threats you just made, there’s no longer any possibility of us resolving this peacefully."

"Either you arrange an ’accident’ and kill me, or I will stop at nothing to destroy you."

"There is no third option."

"Oh?" the slick-haired man sneered. "Playing tough, are we? I’d love to see if you really have what it takes to back up a life-or-death challenge!"

Just then, Duan Yu’s phone rang.

He pulled it out and answered.

"Chief, the situation is under control for now!"

"No!"

"Understood!"

After saying that, Duan Yu put his phone away, smoothly pulled a black object from the back of his waistband, and aimed it right at the slick-haired man’s forehead.

When the slick-haired man got a clear look at the object pointed at him, his legs gave out, and he involuntarily dropped to his knees on the floor.

He couldn’t help but scream internally. ’This is bad... This is really, really bad...’
