Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 543 - 542: A Proper Show of Gratitude

Chapter 543: Chapter 542: A Proper Show of Gratitude

After a week of treatment and recovery, both Qin Lang, who had undergone a craniocerebral hematoma ablation, and the sixteen-year-old girl showed significant improvement.

Qin Lang could now clearly articulate simple sentences, such as, "Mr. Yan, thank you."

Although he needed a moment to gather his thoughts and spoke with a slight stutter, it was a monumental improvement compared to when he could only express himself with grunts.

The improvement in the girl’s vision was also readily apparent.

Her visual resolution had increased by nearly fifty percent.

Previously, looking at anything was like seeing through several layers of gauze for the girl. Now, it was as if one or two of those layers had been removed.

To put it more concretely, it was like upgrading a camera’s resolution from two megapixels to three.

Moreover, the girl’s field of vision had also expanded.

Field of vision refers to the extent of the observable world seen by the eyes at any given moment, with the head and eyeballs held steady.

Generally, the horizontal field of view for both eyes covers a region of about 60° to the left and right.

The vertical field of view extends 50 degrees above the horizontal plane and 70 degrees below it.

Now, the girl’s field of vision had recovered to eighty percent of the normal range—an improvement of about ten percentage points from before her treatment.

However, the improvements in Qin Lang and the girl’s conditions were not without a price.

They both now suffered from new symptoms: paroxysmal headaches and diminished hearing in one ear.

Qin Lang also had the addition of mild tinnitus.

’Are these post-operative complications temporary? Will they gradually diminish or disappear as the surgical trauma heals?’

’Or are they permanent?’

Yan Feifan found it difficult to say. Only time would tell.

Shen Daoran had brought them over to express their gratitude, along with many expensive gifts for Yan Feifan.

Given the hospital’s strict no-gift policy, and with everyone watching, Yan Feifan politely declined most of the gifts. He only accepted a piece of calligraphy personally brushed by Shen Daoran.

"Miraculous Recovery"!

Although Yan Feifan knew nothing about calligraphy, he had to admit that the large characters Shen Daoran had written were exceptionally beautiful.

In his eyes, the piece displayed profound skill.

Without twenty or thirty years of ceaseless practice, it would be impossible to produce such powerful, elegant strokes, as fluid and vigorous as a startled dragon.

This made Yan Feifan realize that the scholarly air exuded by some of the characters Shen Daoran played was likely a natural part of the actor himself.

’If I hang this in the villa’s living room,’ Yan Feifan thought, ’aside from the visually pleasing calligraphy itself, the signature "Shen Daoran" alone would be enough to make countless people green with envy.’

What Yan Feifan hadn’t expected was how incredibly excited the two senior doctors, Mr. Qi and Mr. Miao, were to see Shen Daoran.

They asked for numerous autographs and photos. If it weren’t for their duties, the two old-timers would have loved nothing more than to keep Shen Daoran for a long chat.

Although Qin Lang and the girl were being discharged, they still faced a long road of medication and rehabilitation.

Yan Feifan carefully went over some important aftercare instructions with them, then personally escorted the group out of his office and all the way to the elevators.

When Yan Feifan returned to his office, he found Mr. Qi and Mr. Miao avidly admiring Shen Daoran’s calligraphy.

"Feifan, this piece..."

Yan Feifan cut Mr. Miao off. "Teacher, don’t even think about it. The inscription clearly states it was gifted to me."

"I’ll get one for you next time I have the chance."

Qee Sheng quickly chimed in, "Feifan, make sure you remember to get one for me, too."

Yan Feifan agreed before reminding them, "Zhou Guangji..."

They continued their analysis of Zhou Guangji’s file. After studying his medical history and that of his family, they failed to uncover any useful information.

By afternoon, some of Zhou Guangji’s test results had started to trickle in.

Given the circumstances, Mr. Qi wasn’t trying to cut costs on diagnostics; he ordered every test that might possibly be relevant.

If everything went according to plan, all of Zhou Guangji’s tests would be completed by the following evening.

At nearly 2:00 PM, Zhou Guangji’s brain scans were spread across both light boxes in Mr. Qi’s office, completely covering them.

Yan Feifan’s eyes swept over the scans, and he immediately felt something was off, though he couldn’t pinpoint the problem right away.

He had no choice but to examine them one by one.

Before long, he actually found something.

"Mr. Qi, Teacher, look at this scan. His frontal lobe, right here..."

Yan Feifan pointed to an almost imperceptible shadow on one of the scans. "There’s a very subtle lesion here."

Mr. Qi put on his glasses and leaned in for a look, as did Miao Quan.

"This trace of damage is far too faint. It could just be an artifact from the MRI scanner."

Miao Quan added, "Or it could be a minor brain contusion from the violent impact of the crash."

Mr. Qi mused, "Even if we rule out a scanner artifact, a lesion of this degree, in that location, couldn’t cause physical incapacitation."

"There is one way it could," Yan Feifan corrected.

"Epilepsy."

"The bio-electrical surge from a sudden seizure could cause this level of brain damage."

"Moreover..."

Yan Feifan analyzed, "A mild seizure could have caused Zhou Guangji’s body to stiffen and his consciousness to blur. That would have made him unable to respond intelligently or quickly to the emergency."

Mr. Qi scanned the cranial images on the light box several times.

"I don’t see any lesion indicative of seizures."

"Feifan, are you suggesting that this fellow, by some incredible coincidence, had his first-ever mild seizure the exact moment before the accident?"

"The odds of that are so minuscule, I’d sooner believe he’s suffering from a conversion disorder!"

"Mr. Qi," Yan Feifan said with a straight face, "the odds are indeed low, but we can’t completely rule it out, can we?"

Mr. Qi snorted. "Feifan, go buy fifty lottery tickets tonight. If you come back tomorrow having won even second prize, let alone the grand prize, I’ll concede you’re right."

"Mr. Qi, I’m trying to have a serious analysis of the possibilities," Yan Feifan said, frustrated. "And you’re comparing it to sheer luck."

"The kind of low-probability event I’m talking about has happened many times throughout history."

Mr. Qi and Miao Quan exchanged a look and shook their heads. "He’s still young," Mr. Qi said. "Always drawn to the novel and exotic possibilities."

Mr. Qi then added in an earnest tone, "Feifan, we can’t put the cart before the horse. Let’s first rule out all the other, more likely factors. Only then will we consider your long-shot possibility..."

For the rest of the afternoon, they analyzed Zhou Guangji’s test results as they came in, but found nothing conclusive.

Around 6:00 PM, another visitor came to the Diagnostics Department looking for Yan Feifan.

It was Mr. Pan Lirong.

"The homeowners at the estate are very enthusiastic about funding a new branch of the Affiliated Hospital. Mr. Zuo, a few other eager homeowners, and I have come to discuss the specifics with Mr. Liu."

"Mr. Yan, will you be joining the discussion tonight?"

Yan Feifan shook his head with a smile. "Mr. Pan, my presence won’t make a difference in a meeting like that."

Pan Lirong smiled. "That’s true. Mundane affairs like this shouldn’t occupy your valuable time, Mr. Yan."

After a pause, he asked in a low voice, "Mr. Yan, could I speak with you privately for a moment?"

"Of course."

Yan Feifan led Pan Lirong into the large, empty office next door and asked with concern, "Mr. Pan, is it a health issue?"

"No, no!"

Pan Lirong said with a laugh, "My health is excellent. I can even go to the golf course and sink a few putts now."

He paused, his expression turning serious.

"This morning, Mr. Cao—the grandfather of the little boy who tragically died in the car accident—came to see me."

"Sigh... In just a day or two, he’s aged a decade."

Pan Lirong sighed regretfully, then continued in a low voice, "Mr. Cao isn’t short on money, and he certainly doesn’t care about a measly compensation from the other party."

"What he wants most is for that man to get the punishment he deserves."

"Mr. Yan, is that man actually sick or not?"

Hearing this question, Yan Feifan immediately became wary.

"Mr. Pan, I’m not at liberty to disclose information about that."

"I can only say that our diagnostic team will respect the objective facts. We will not falsify or fabricate anything."

Pan Lirong let out a soft, "Oh." He said, "I understand, Mr. Yan."

"Mr. Cao also made a point of telling me that, as thanks for saving his granddaughter’s life..."

"...once this matter is resolved, he will be sure to express his gratitude in a very significant way."
