Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 541 - 540: What You Fear Is What You Get

Chapter 541: Chapter 540: What You Fear Is What You Get

Monday morning, around 8:00 AM, in the comprehensive diagnostics building of the Affiliated Hospital.

We Xin walked into the large, empty office next to the director’s, first opening the windows to air the room out.

She then walked over to her desk, set down her briefcase, and took a clean, light-colored cloth from a drawer. She began to meticulously wipe down her desk and chair.

Even though the desk and chair looked spotless, We Xin would feel unsettled if she didn’t give them a thorough wipe-down...

After wiping down her own desk and chair, as well as those of several colleagues, We Xin, her forehead dotted with sweat, closed the window and turned on the air conditioning.

She pulled the door open, about to go wash the cloth, and nearly collided with the person on the other side.

"Ah... Mr. Yan!"

"Mr. We, morning! You’re the first one here, as always."

We Xin smiled faintly and stepped aside, letting Yan Feifan into the office.

"Come cool off, Mr. Yan. It’s a bit hot today. The temperature was already thirty degrees Celsius this morning."

As she spoke, We Xin took a folder from her briefcase and handed it to Yan Feifan.

"Mr. Yan, these are the man’s treatment records from the Armed Police General Hospital, along with the various tests he underwent."

"You should take a look."

After he took the folder, We Xin added, "The police will be transferring the man over around nine."

"His full medical history should also be compiled and delivered to us by then."

Yan Feifan grunted, casually sat down at a nearby desk—in Lei Qingping’s seat—and began leafing through the documents...

When We Xin returned from washing the cloth, she found, just as she’d expected, that Yan Feifan had already placed the folder back on her desk.

’The speed at which he processes information...’

’It’s infuriatingly enviable!’

We Xin sized up Yan Feifan, who appeared to be sitting there, lost in thought.

Compared to a few months ago, while he was still slender, he looked much healthier. His cheeks finally had some flesh on them, and his complexion was much ruddier.

His fingers, in particular, no longer looked like skin and bones; they had become noticeably fuller, which was a pleasant sight.

Beyond the physical changes, We Xin felt that Yan Feifan had gained the calm, confident air of a renowned physician.

Just by sitting there, he had a presence that was impossible to ignore. You could tell he was no ordinary person.

’Or maybe it’s just my own perception?’

We Xin sighed to herself.

In just four or five short months, Yan Feifan’s career had skyrocketed, and he was now a renowned doctor on par with Mr. Qee.

In contrast, the rest of them had barely made any progress at all.

’It’s infuriating to compare yourself to others.’

We Xin reigned in her complicated feelings and asked, "Find anything, Mr. Yan?"

Yan Feifan shook his head. "Based on the current test results, I can’t find any physiological signs that would explain his mental instability or physical incapacitation."

"I studied them for half the night and came up with nothing either."

We Xin shared her own conclusion, then offered her analysis. "Perhaps this is just the guy’s last-ditch effort to evade legal punishment."

"A friend of mine said his actions will likely be defined as endangering public safety. Given the severe consequences, the prison sentence will be at least ten years."

Yan Feifan said, "Oh," and then asked, "What about the vehicle inspection results?"

We Xin shook her head. "The vehicle was badly burned. They say the detailed inspection report won’t be ready for at least a week."

"However, according to the detailed data from the car manufacturer, the brakes were never applied. The car was just slowly, continuously accelerating."

"This also matches what was seen on the surveillance footage."

Yan Feifan asked doubtfully, "Wasn’t the car supposed to be equipped with a collision avoidance system?"

"And it didn’t do anything at all?"

We Xin smiled. "The car’s issues aren’t our problem. We’re only responsible for determining if there’s something wrong with the man himself."

"Mr. Yan, let’s say it’s true, just as he claims—that he has absolutely no memory of the thirty minutes leading up to the accident. What do you think could have caused that?"

Yan Feifan analyzed, "There are many possibilities."

"The most likely scenario is that the violent impact caused some form of brain injury, leading to short-term memory loss. It’s like blacking out from drinking."

"If the physical incapacitation occurred *before* the accident, we can’t rule out some kind of toxic substance..."

We Xin cut in, "But Mr. Yan, his alcohol and drug tests were both negative."

Yan Feifan suggested, "Maybe it’s a new type of drug?"

"A toxic or allergic reaction to certain drugs or substances could cause temporary physical incapacitation..."

Yan Feifan suddenly recalled Xiao Man’s call from yesterday. "I heard the dashcam recorded his wife berating him nonstop right before the accident."

"It’s also possible he did something rash in the heat of the moment."

After a pause, Yan Feifan continued slowly, "There’s one more possibility. It’s like the old story of Fan Jin, who went mad with joy after passing the imperial exams. Under extreme emotional stress, he could have lost control and entered a hysterical state."

"That would explain why he has no memory of that period of time."

"Furthermore, in that hysterical state, he would have been driving on a sliver of consciousness, relying on instinct and muscle memory."

"He could operate the vehicle normally but would be unable to react to any sudden events on the road..."

"Stop, stop..."

We Xin cut him off. "Mr. Yan, whatever you do, do not mention that hysteria theory to the patient."

"Hysteria is considered a type of acute mental illness, and it comes in many forms. Some hysterical episodes can appear and disappear without a trace."

"It’s the perfect excuse to get him off the hook."

Yan Feifan chuckled. "Don’t worry, I know how to keep my mouth shut."

He thought of something and quickly asked, "Oh, Mr. We, have you heard about what happened with Dandan?"

We Xin nodded emphatically. "Everyone knows."

"Oh, Mr. Yan, you have no idea how terrifying Mr. Qee was for a few days there. He chewed the rest of us out so badly we didn’t know which way was up."

She gestured with her finger toward the director’s office next door. "For two days, we could hear him and his daughter arguing, clear as day, right through the wall."

Yan Feifan asked with concern, "And now? Has he cooled down?"

We Xin sighed. "He’s calmed down some, but if we mess up, we’ll still get a vicious earful."

Then she asked curiously, "Mr. Yan, after that man’s... part... recovers, will it really function like a normal one?"

Yan Feifan stated frankly, "Theoretically, yes. And it can be used anytime, anywhere."

"But, theory is one thing. It remains to be tested in practice."

We Xin pursed her lips in a knowing smile. "Tsk, tsk... Anytime, anywhere... That’s the dream of so many men!"

"Mr. Yan, once your phalloplasty procedure is perfected, the line of patients waiting for it will probably stretch from this hospital all the way to the Yangtze River."

Yan Feifan rolled his eyes. "That’s not the men’s dream. That’s the women’s dream."

Looking as though she’d just discovered a new continent, We Xin asked in surprise, "Mr. Yan, are you speaking from personal experience?"

"Are you, um, having trouble keeping up with Dr. Yu Suye, the hospital’s number one beauty?"

Those words immediately got Yan Feifan flustered.

"How is that possible? Mr. We, don’t just make wild guesses..."

Just then, the office door was flung open.

A grim-faced Qee Sheng appeared in the doorway and barked, "This office is not a place for idle chatter."

Qee Sheng looked at We Xin and Yan Feifan, who had instantly snapped to attention, and softened his tone. "I just received word from the police."

"The man is claiming that under the intense verbal provocation from his wife, he flew into a rage, his mind went blank, and he fell into a hysterical state."

’Well, I’ll be damned. God damn it...’

’Speak of the devil. Did some expert give him pointers?’

Yan Feifan couldn’t help but exchange a look with We Xin...
