Chapter 264 - 260: A Missile Soars into the Sky
Chapter 264: Chapter 260: A Missile Soars into the Sky
"BOOM!" "CLANG CLANG CLANG!"
"WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH!" "BANG BANG BANG!"
The battle had reached a fever pitch, a fight to the death. Spurred on by the massive reward of sacking the city, the Red Sun Army fought with no fear of death, their morale soaring as they launched a ferocious assault.
A rain of arrows howled, and rubble was flung into the air.
At White Cloud City’s southern gate, atop the gatehouse tower, Squad Leader Hong Hai had taken an arrow to the leg. Blood streamed down, soaking his pant leg red. He was currently leaning on a crutch, standing on the city wall and directing the guards in battle.
"Squad Leader Hong, you’re injured! It’s too dangerous here. You should go back and rest!" A few guards stayed close by Hong Hai’s side, fending off the stray arrows as they repeatedly tried to persuade him.
"Rest?" Hong Hai shook his head and gave a bitter smile. "How could I possibly rest in a situation like this? Once the city falls, no one will escape with their lives. Since the Gang Leader entrusted the southern gate to me, I must defend it well—unless I die trying..."
As Hong Hai was speaking, his expression suddenly twisted. His gaze locked onto something ahead as he cried out in alarm, "Old Xue! Get out of the way!"
Not far away, Squad Leader Xue Yong had just cut down an enemy officer who had made it onto the wall. As he started to get up, he saw a massive boulder, the size of a millstone, whistling toward him.
The boulder was hard granite, launched at high speed by a catapult. It hurtled over with a roaring wind, carrying immense force. Given its size and velocity, it would undoubtedly smash a person into a meat paste.
’So fast... damn it all. It’s over. I’m going to die!’ Xue Yong, covered in blood, stared at the boulder screaming through the air. He knew he was exhausted and had no way to dodge. Still, the man was surprisingly calm about it. After all, he’d killed dozens of enemies; he had already broken even.
The boulder whistled closer and closer, casting a heavy shadow. Xue Yong’s eyes went wide as he watched it, about to be smashed into pulp.
Just then—
"ROAR!"
A loud, bestial roar suddenly echoed.
A flash of cyan shot past his eyes. A massive Gale Leopard leaped over his head, its cyan fur rippling slightly, demonic energy surging from its body. It raised its sharp claws and swatted at the descending boulder.
"BOOM!"
Stone fragments flew and scattered. The millstone-sized boulder was smashed to pieces by a single swipe of the Gale Leopard’s claws. Stone dust rained down amidst flying grit.
"G-Gang Leader!" Xue Yong stammered, his face lit with joyous surprise as he looked at the cyan figure on the Gale Leopard’s back.
The commotion naturally drew the attention of many other guards.
"It’s the Gang Leader! He’s here!"
"Where?"
"The Gang Leader’s over there! He just saved Squad Leader Xue."
"This is great! The Gang Leader is finally here!"
"Brothers, muster your Spiritual Power! Kill these invading Red Sun Army bastards! Fuck them up!"
In an instant, morale on the city walls soared. The blood-soaked guards began a fierce counterattack. The originally crumbling defenses suddenly became much more solid.
Hong Hai’s face was filled with joy. Leaning on his crutch, he limped over to Ye Xing, bowed, and said, "This subordinate greets the Gang Leader!"
White Cloud City was divided into four main gates—east, west, north, and south. Hong Hai and Xue Yong were responsible for defending the southern gate.
"Mm, you’ve all worked hard." Ye Xing, dressed in cyan robes, slid off the Gale Leopard’s back. He asked in a low voice, "What’s the status of the battle?"
"The situation isn’t optimistic, but it’s still within our expectations. We’ve lost nearly two thousand brothers, while the enemy has suffered forty to fifty thousand casualties. If we hold on for another two or three shichen, we should be able to deploy the reserve forces," said Hong Hai.
"There’s no need to send more men. Too many brothers have already died!" Ye Xing said, a wave of grief washing over him as he looked at the guards lying in pools of blood on the wall. These were his men, brave soldiers who were fighting for White Cloud City and had died defending it.
"No reinforcements? What do you mean by that, Gang Leader?" Xue Yong grew anxious and confused. He quickly said, "But Gang Leader, if we don’t send reinforcements, the city will be breached! Even more people will die then! Those sons-of-bitches down there want to sack the city! We—"
"You talk too much!" Hong Hai slapped the back of Xue Yong’s head. His eyes were thoughtful as he said, "The Gang Leader has his own plans!"
The frenzied slaughter continued on and below the city wall. People were dying with every passing moment.
The bodies piled up below the wall were so numerous that describing it as a mountain of corpses was no exaggeration. Ye Xing felt not a shred of pity for the dead Red Sun Army soldiers. They were the ones attacking White Cloud City. Even if they were just following orders from their superiors, it didn’t change the fact that they were invaders.
As the saying goes, great rewards bring forth brave men. Lured by the enormous profits of sacking the city, tens of thousands of Red Sun Army soldiers attacked with frenzy.
Arrows rained down with howls, and catapults frantically launched massive boulders.
"This war should be over," Ye Xing said, his gaze icy as he looked toward the Red Sun Army’s Central Army Camp in the distance. Banners fluttered there, one of them prominently embroidered with the name ’Ouyang’.
Finding an empty spot nearby, Ye Xing opened his Qiankun Bag and took out a missile.
The missile was cylindrical, wider at the tail and pointed at the tip, and was about as thick as one or two men could wrap their arms around. It was the type launched from a vehicle. This was a powerful, modern, large-scale weapon. The missile was equipped with a smart radar detection system that could automatically lock onto a target. Combined with its super-high launch speed and wide area of effect, it was a terrifying weapon.
"Huh? Gang Leader, what’s that?" Xue Yong asked curiously.
"It’s a missile. An extremely deadly weapon," Ye Xing said grimly as he began to operate it.
"A weapon? Is it like a Heaven-shattering Thunder? It’s just so big, it must be inconvenient to carry," Xue Yong muttered.
Ye Xing couldn’t be bothered with the idiot. He quickly operated the missile, and with the press of the final button...
"VMMMM!"
With a deafening roar, the missile shot into the sky, trailing thick white smoke. Like a comet, its tail of fire streaked across the dark night sky, dazzlingly bright.
"H-holy... shit! This... this big guy just flew up on its own!" Xue Yong yelped, staring in utter shock at the ascending missile. He, Hong Hai, and a dozen or so others were close enough to witness the launch firsthand.
"The missile’s trajectory... it seems to be heading for the Red Sun Army’s Central Army Camp!" Hong Hai’s eyes shone with anticipation. "The Gang Leader’s weapon is simply incredible. It can actually fly on its own. If this missile is as powerful as ten or twenty Heaven-shattering Thunders, it could probably deal a heavy blow to the Red Sun Army’s Central Army Camp! It could paralyze their command headquarters."
It could only be said that Hong Hai’s thinking was too simple. How could the power of a missile be compared to a mere ten or twenty grenades? Not to mention a nightmare-class nuclear warhead, even a conventional missile was terrifyingly powerful.
The dazzling missile that shot up from within White Cloud City instantly captured countless eyes. At the four gates—east, west, north, and south—and throughout the city, innumerable residents looked up at the night sky in astonishment.
Across the pitch-black night sky, the dazzling missile streaked past, trailing a long tail of fire!
