Chapter 375 - 124: The Decisive Mendes
Chapter 375: Chapter 124: The Decisive Mendes
Blake didn’t spend much time pondering whether the Beastmen would flee.
Or rather, the situation no longer allowed him to think. The humans’ war cries grew closer, and according to the fleeing Goblin Warriors, the Flying Dragon was already overhead.
"Quick! Form up! Form up!"
"Stop them! Stop them! Get all the Stone we’ve stockpiled!"
Feeling the killing intent radiating from the distant human Soldiers, Blake finally understood why the Goblin Warriors from before had been so terrified.
Indeed, this army was on a completely different level from any they had encountered before.
...
From the sky, Robson silently watched it all unfold. Goblins swarmed from every direction, crashing into the human forces.
Looking down from above, it was like watching swarms of ants colliding.
The entirety of Ancient Dumu Town was packed to the brim with humans and goblins. The battlefield had even spilled out beyond the town’s borders.
"Look! A dragon! It’s that dragon again!"
"Avoid it! Avoid it!"
Robson rode Everton, with Huang Na flying alongside him.
From his vantage point in the sky, Robson didn’t even need to look for an opportune moment to strike. The goblins on the ground were in complete disarray and packed far too densely! Any random gout of Dragon Breath from Everton would be put to perfect use, without a single bit of waste.
ROAR!
Following a deafening roar, Everton unleashed a vicious stream of fire at the most densely packed area of goblins. Huang Na followed suit, breathing fire on another location.
Robson heard a SIZZLE, followed by the agonized screams of goblins.
These goblins were having the worst luck imaginable, running into Robson, a dragon, and a phoenix—basically the two most powerful types of magical beasts known in this world.
Normally, magical beasts of this caliber would only appear on major, formal battlefields, like the central front. In places like that, there would naturally be Magic Bed Crossbows and Military Mages to deal with such Flying Magical Beasts.
As Everton and Huang Na soared back into the sky, the fires they had left behind did not depart with them.
As far as Robson knew, there was nothing that could easily extinguish Dragon Flame and Phoenix Fire.
The first batch of incinerated goblins could even be considered lucky. At least they were taken in an instant, sent off to the Celestial Kingdom of the Beast God or some other deity.
It was when the flames spread to the second wave of goblins that the true power of a High-Tier Magical Beast’s fire became apparent. Ordinary methods were completely useless against these flames, leaving the goblins to slowly suffer the torment as their bodies burned.
Flames like these would likely spread across two or three more individuals before slowly dying down into a common fire.
"The Lord has cleared a path for us! Charge!"
Everton was originally from the Third Empire’s formal military academies, having received professional wartime training. He had since wandered the Human World and seen much.
That last gout of flame he’d breathed was masterfully executed. It landed right in front of the human Soldiers’ main point of attack, perfectly timed so that by the time the Soldiers charged through, the Dragon Breath had already become a normal fire.
"Long live Affleck! Long live the Lord!"
"Charge! For Affleck! For the Lord!"
The human Soldiers, organized into small squads, had long since gone wild at the sight of the endless goblins before them. Each one gripped their weapon and charged forward with all their might.
In their eyes, these weren’t goblins. They were walking military honors!
The goblins were already terrified by the dragon in the sky, the memory of the Dragon Breath’s devastating strike still fresh in their minds.
Now, seeing these frenzied human Soldiers, their will to fight dwindled even further. If not for the confidence from their recent victories, they would have already turned tail and fled.
But the moment they clashed with these humans, they realized just how laughable it was to compare this army to the humans they had fought before.
At the first contact, the sharp blades in the human Soldiers’ hands sliced their so-called weapons in two. Meanwhile, their own go-to tactics—clubs and Stone—were utterly useless against this new foe.
This was a one-sided slaughter. An utterly unreasonable war.
"Run! Run! This is nothing like what those guys said!"
"Devils! Demons!"
Just like the Soldiers who had first defended Ancient Dumu Town, the goblins collapsed at the first sign of contact.
The only difference this time was that as the goblins in the front tried to flee to the rear, there was no longer any room for them to move.
Goblins at the back, unaware of the situation, continued to surge forward, creating the bizarre spectacle of a goblin stampede trampling itself.
...
"Chieftain! Bad news! The humans have scattered the Aoqi Tribe!"
"It’s terrible, the Weima Tribe has fled..."
Blake’s eyes widened, his pupils shot with blood. He couldn’t seem to believe what was happening before him.
"Impossible! These aren’t humans! This isn’t a level humans can achieve!"
Blake stared in shock at the scene. Robson’s army had delivered a stunning blow, shattering the pleasant dream he’d been living in for the past few days.
Goblins were goblins, and humans were humans. The chasm between the races was not so easily crossed.
"No... that’s not right!"
"Where is Mendes? Where are those Beastmen?!"
"Right! Mendes! Quick! Get those Beastmen over here!
Tell them to hold the line! As long as the Beastmen attack, everything will be fine!"
...
"Fuck all that! Grab three days of rations, grab your weapons, and let’s go!"
"Move it! Move it!"
At that moment, Mendes, the one Blake had placed all his hopes in, had successfully gathered all the Beastmen and Gray Dwarves.
However, contrary to Blake’s expectations, Mendes had no intention of dispatching troops to Ancient Dumu Town. Instead, he had turned and was heading west.
’Was he kidding? What level was that human army on, and what level were his own forces?’
Mendes wasn’t sure of the exact gap between that human army and his own, but he was keenly aware of the difference between his ragtag troops and the elite soldiers Prince Odoruo once commanded.
If even someone as powerful as Prince Odoruo had been completely crushed by these humans, what chance did he, Mendes, stand?
His only mission now was to move his troops out and retreat to the west as quickly as possible.
’To be honest, I have no idea about the actual strength of the humans in the west. But no matter what, surely they can’t be more ridiculously overpowered than the army right in front of me, right?’
"Sir! Sir! There are humans to the south, too! The southern force is catching up!"
"Quick! Forget about them! Just retreat!" Mendes yelled to the Soldiers behind him.
...
The victory was already decided. Robson circled once more on his dragon before descending from the sky with a frown.
He wasn’t frowning because the Soldiers’ performance was poor, but because it was too good!
They were about to kill all the goblins!
In that short time in Ancient Dumu Town, Robson’s troops had taken down at least two thousand Goblin Warriors.
The number of kills elsewhere was countless.
’If this keeps up, what will I do if I end up just serving up easy targets for the nobles of Auric Province? I, Lord Robson, can’t actually be running a charity, can I?’
For the first time, Robson felt that being too strong wasn’t necessarily a good thing.
At least for now, the army’s strength was actually getting in the way of Lord Robson’s military plans.
"Ais, sound the horn. Have the army begin to withdraw."
"As for the other areas, proceed according to the original plan," Robson commanded, looking at Ais.
