Chapter 314 - 72: Post-war Affairs
Chapter 314: Chapter 72: Post-war Affairs
Late at night, the camp at Wayne Mountain was brightly lit.
Inside the main tent, Robson was tallying his losses and gains from the past few days.
He used to have the assistance of Valentino and Viscount Feiman, but now he had to rely solely on himself.
Fortunately, this task wasn’t complicated with the support of the Mount & Blade panel—or rather, the war itself hadn’t been complicated.
This war on the eastern front seemed like a lot had happened, but in reality, it was all over in just over ten days. They had set out in early February, and it was now just a few days shy of March.
Throughout this period, Robson’s army had been advancing triumphantly. Aside from a few risky moments at critical junctures, they had essentially steamrolled through everything else. The number of Soldiers lost was around one hundred.
Most of the losses occurred on the first night they arrived at the battlefield, especially among the elite Dwarves, the Centaurs, and the Bloodthirsty Jackal Wolfman unit. At all other times, the enemy had basically collapsed at the first sign of contact, and there had hardly been any real fighting.
Although he had only lost about a hundred Soldiers, looking at the red text on the Mount & Blade panel, Robson still felt a sharp pang of heartache.
Because Robson had charged so aggressively, those fighting on the very front lines were basically his most elite Warriors.
These were Soldiers that he, Lord Robson, had spent tremendous effort to train. The losses were heaviest among the Tier Five and Tier Six Cavalry, with over fifty of them falling.
Of course, if any other Officers knew what was going through Robson’s mind right now, they would probably be furious enough to jump out of their boots!
On the battlefields between the Frank Kingdom and the Beastman Empire, daily losses were counted in the thousands.
Especially with the results Robson had achieved—it was no exaggeration to say he had made his name in a single battle. He had single-handedly swept the enemy from the entire front line. Even if it was just the eastern front, it was an achievement to be proud of!
Robson didn’t dwell on it for too long and turned his attention back to the Mount & Blade panel.
Although these losses pained Robson, the corresponding gains were enormous.
The gains from this war, as displayed on the Mount & Blade panel, were the large number of Tier Seven Soldiers.
For a Tier Seven Soldier, the experience bar was as long as the one Lord Robson had needed to break through to the Golden Tier.
Among the promoted Soldiers, Tier Six Archers made up the vast majority. Out of one group of one hundred and twenty Tier Seven Soldiers, one hundred were marksmen. There was no helping it; the most outstanding performers in the entire war were the Magic Crossbows from the Edward family.
These crossbows, originally useless, had been turned from trash into treasure in Robson’s hands, becoming a devastating weapon on the battlefield.
A sky full of arrows against Beastmen—opponents with zero defense who loved to use swarm tactics—was an overwhelmingly crushing blow. Of course, these Magic Crossbows couldn’t be used constantly. Tier Six Soldiers were not yet Extraordinary, and their arms would pretty much give out after firing a single volley.
But this minor drawback did not diminish Robson’s fondness for these durable Magic Crossbows. ’Sooner or later, I, Lord Robson, will have to produce my own Magic Crossbows. Of course, it would be even better if I could get some generous aid from Marquis Oscillate.’
Aside from the group of Tier Seven Soldiers, the other major source of Tier Sevens was Robson’s own Cavalry Team.
This Cavalry Team under Robson’s command had been active throughout the entire campaign. Although the Fengman Knight Order did most of the charging at the front, the Cavalry Team following behind still reaped considerable rewards.
In total, about one hundred Tier Seven Cavalry were created.
These two batches of Tier Seven Soldiers combined already numbered over two hundred!
One had to understand that Robson’s Tier Seven Cavalry basically represented the peak of human potential. Based on Robson’s previous experiments, with a little more Magical Beast Meat or a few Magic Potions, they could essentially become pseudo-Extraordinary. And even as pseudo-Extraordinary, with their experience as elite soldiers, they would have no problem fighting a Bronze Tier One or Two on even terms!
Moreover, this was only for Soldiers without Extraordinary talent becoming pseudo-Extraordinary. It was still uncertain what would happen with those who did possess such talent!
Robson could now say that he had a reserve Extraordinary Corps of two hundred.
Don’t underestimate the number two hundred. Even for the Fengman Clan, with its thousand-year heritage, their entire family’s Extraordinary forces only numbered around a thousand.
A newly-risen great noble like Earl Uman had an Extraordinary Corps of only about two hundred. Of course, the quality of Earl Uman’s Extraordinary Corps was likely a bit better than what Robson had.
If judged solely on his Extraordinary Corps, Robson was already at the standard of an Upper Count. Even taking everything into account, a mid-rank status was no problem at all.
According to the normal progression, he had already reached the threshold to make a run for the status of a great noble.
The only thing Robson regretted about this war was that the gains for the second and third groups were too small.
Their respective Tier Three ratios had barely changed. The third group did gain a few dozen Tier Fours, but the change wasn’t significant.
But this couldn’t be helped. The second and third groups weren’t present when it was easiest to gain experience during the war. They only arrived near the end to catch the tail end of the fighting.
Just as Robson was observing the Mount & Blade panel, his Personal Guard outside the tent suddenly stirred.
"Lord, it’s Captain Ais..."
"Ais? Let him in."
Robson moved from his chair. Besides the visible improvements, like the elite corps, there was another, more subtle improvement: the army’s command structure.
Claude’s Cavalry Commander skill was now max level. Bo Yang, for some unknown reason, had unlocked the Infantry command skill, and Fioro’s Bowman Commander skill had leveled up again.
Of course, the most obvious change was with Ais.
Ais’s biggest change was that his name had now appeared on Robson’s Mount & Blade panel!
Originally, Robson thought that only the Extraordinary could have their names appear on the panel. But later, even the commanders of the second and third groups didn’t show up on it.
Now that Ais, a mere mortal, had also made it onto the Mount & Blade panel, Robson was a bit confused about its inclusion criteria. ’I’ll just have to study it later.’
"[Ais (No Extraordinary Level): Talents: Intermediate Military Array Commander, Low-Level Corps Command, Low-Level Logistical Transport
"Skills: Frank Border Watcher Swordsmanship
"Frank...]"
What surprised and delighted Robson was that as soon as Ais appeared on the Mount & Blade panel, he had unlocked three talents at once!
These were talents, mind you!
Talents were different from skills. According to Robson’s own observations, a talent represented the speed of advancement for its corresponding skill.
For example, Claude possessed the Cavalry Commander talent, and it only took him a few months to max out the Cavalry Commander skill.
Meanwhile, Bo Yang had only just now developed the Infantry command skill. Of course, there were exceptions to everything. Robson himself, for example, had no "talent" option at all, yet his various skills still advanced at a divine speed.
What made Robson happiest, however, was a certain possibility.
Ais’s appearance on the Mount & Blade panel proved that geniuses could indeed emerge from among the Peasants.
’I don’t know about others, but as for Ais, his ancestors have been farming for the Odogin Family for three generations.’
’This means that as long as the education is up to standard, I, Lord Robson, can discover talent from among the commoners in the future.’
’Talent discovered within my own territory will surely be far more reliable than any outsiders.’
