Chapter 269 - 38: Soldiers from Heaven

Chapter 269: Chapter 38: Soldiers from Heaven

Seeing this, Chief Umm finally let out a sigh of relief.

He had been blind—too hasty. He’d somehow overlooked that this group of humans numbered a little over a hundred.

After all, Chief Umm currently had nearly three thousand gathered around him. Even if the enemy were Extraordinary humans and his side were just ordinary goblins, they could still take a pound of flesh from them. Once Knights lost the mobility of their mounts, they were even less effective in stationary combat than veteran Infantry. Of course, that Infantry would also have to be Extraordinary.

And based on Chief Umm’s understanding of humans, these guys would certainly never trade their lives for goblin lives.

Even if they did trade their lives for goblin lives, he, Umm, would still come out way ahead.

Just as Umm was about to order his people to charge again, another wave of hoofbeats suddenly sounded from the rear.

’More of them?!’

Umm’s heart leaped in alarm. This time, however, he had learned his lesson. He began to use his battle aura to sense the vibrations in the ground, trying to track the human cavalry’s movements.

But the more he listened, the more something felt wrong.

’This wave of Knights... the commotion they’re making isn’t small! It’s definitely more than a hundred men!’

Umm looked to the south. Although he was a Silver-rank Extraordinary, goblins were born with poor night vision. Becoming Extraordinary at best only doubled that ability. This was also why Extraordinary goblins weren’t highly regarded; the Extraordinary power simply multiplied their base abilities. If you start with one and multiply it by a hundred, you only get a hundred. Some people, however, were born with a base of a thousand.

Chief Umm could only see clouds of dust rolling in the distance. Gradually, a Knight Team of nearly a hundred men charged out of the dust.

"For Feng Man! For the Kingdom!"

"For Feng Man..."

Seeing this, the weight in Chief Umm’s chest finally lifted. Goblins and kobolds were gathering around him in ever-increasing numbers. Although they had no real system of arrays to speak of, their sheer numbers were overwhelming!

’Never mind a hundred men,’ he thought. ’Even if they doubled that number, what could they do?’

Unless another Knight Order of the same size as the first one appeared, trying to scatter several thousand goblins with a single charge was basically wishful thinking.

Just as Chief Umm was feeling fortunate, the vibrations from the ground beneath his feet grew louder and louder.

Chief Umm was filled with shock and doubt. He looked again, and it was still the same hundred Knights.

’Can so few people really make this much noise?’

Just as Chief Umm was wondering, a force of cavalry several times larger suddenly emerged from behind those hundred Knights. Although they didn’t look as robust individually as the Knights in front, their strength lay in their massive numbers.

Chief Umm looked over and saw they were almost five times the number of the previous Knights!

"For the Lord! For the Affleck Domain!"

The Affleck Domain was the land enfeoffed to Robson. This was clearly Robson’s First Cavalry Team.

’So many of them!’

Chief Umm’s heart seized in shock. He had to admit he had celebrated too soon.

"Spread out! Spread out!" Chief Umm waved his arms frantically, roaring in all directions.

Chief Umm’s voice mingled with the sound of human hoofbeats, finally dissolving into the chaotic clamor of the goblin horde.

It had to be said, goblins had a strange talent for hearing about Gold Coins. The environment before hadn’t been any better than it was now, but they had heard Chief Umm’s mention of Gold Coins crystal clear. Now, Chief Umm was shouting orders with even more force, yet the horde paid him no mind.

Chief Umm’s eyes grew red with fury as he watched this scene, but he was helpless. He could only start calling for the Warriors of his own tribe to fall back. In the current chaos, however, it was impossible to tell tribes apart; the goblins couldn’t even distinguish themselves from the kobolds.

Just as Chief Umm was about to send in his last reserve unit, the goblin mob finally began to stir.

As the human cavalry advanced, some goblins finally sensed something was wrong and began to look around.

It wasn’t that there were no Extraordinary individuals in the goblin horde; it was just that most were only first or second-tier Bronze, with physical abilities far inferior to Chief Umm, who was already Silver-rank.

Among the masses of goblins and kobolds, some Extraordinary goblins began to cry out in terror. It started with the goblins in the south, then slowly spread northward as more and more of them spotted the human cavalry.

Only now did they begin to remember what a large-scale attack by human cavalry actually looked like. They scrambled to flee in all directions.

Unfortunately, an army is not something easily gathered, nor is it something easily dispersed.

The southernmost goblins began to run in every direction, ignoring the pleas of the Goblin Chiefs around them. The goblins behind them were not so lucky.

Because the human cavalry was already upon them.

At first, the goblins in the center of the horde hadn’t seen the large cavalry unit behind the hundred Knights. Thinking they were the same as the previous group and remembering the reward Umm had offered, they began to screech and cackle, hoping to claim a few human heads and earn their prize.

Just as many of the Goblin Chiefs in the center had predicted, the first wave of Knights to charge was like a clay ox sinking into the sea; they only managed to roll into the middle of the goblin horde before being swallowed up.

It wasn’t that these Knights were weak; it was mainly that there were simply too many goblins.

After Chief Umm’s bounty announcement, nearly all the goblins and kobolds in the small town were converging on the battlefield. Goblins and kobolds didn’t have much in the way of military formations; four or five thousand of them were simply clustered together in a single mass.

Facing a goblin horde of this scale, even daring to charge was an act of courage in itself.

Watching the human cavalry about to bear down on them, the entire goblin dog-headed people phalanx—if you could even call it a phalanx—began to seethe with unrest.

Although they weren’t very bright, they still had basic common sense. One look at the human cavalry in the distance was enough to know they could be pierced straight through.

.....

"According to Plan Five! Begin the attack!"

Looking at the Beastmen horde just a stone’s throw away, Claude raised his long spear and shouted to the Cavalry Team behind him.

"For the Lord! For Frank!"

The cavalrymen behind Claude roared in response.

Then, the entire Cavalry Team began to skillfully change formation. In no time, the whole unit had transformed into a rolling wall of steel.

Among Robson’s forces right now, judging by rank alone, the most elite unit aside from the First Regiment had to be the Knight Team.

The percentage of fifth-tier members in the Knight Team wasn’t much different from that of the First Regiment.

After giving the order, Claude immediately tightened his grip on his long spear, his eyes fixed firmly on the path ahead.

Claude had absolute trust in his Soldiers. One order was all that was needed.

"Die!"

Seeing that he was about to charge into the goblin camp, Claude ignited his battle aura. In an instant, man and horse became one. He raised his long spear and thrust forward. Because the goblins were packed so densely, Claude’s single thrust instantly eliminated three or four of them.

By now, the entire goblin force had realized something was wrong and began to scatter in all directions. The retreat was so frantic that waves of goblins and kobolds were trampled to death by their own comrades. The greatest disadvantage of a chaotic formation was beginning to show...

Compared to the goblins that managed to run away, even more remained frozen in place, utterly bewildered. This, however, created a considerable obstacle for Robson’s Cavalry Team.

But fortunately, Claude had already commanded the Cavalry Team to complete its formation change before entering the fray. Once the full force of the Cavalry Team’s charge slammed into the goblin horde, it was an absolute slaughter!

The Cavalry Team flanked Claude, acting like a giant thresher. Wherever they passed, they left a trail of blood and gore, with not a single goblin left in sight!
