Chapter 141: Late Night Visit to the Kitchen
"An Xi, remove these curtains. There are new curtains in the storeroom that I bought a couple of days ago. Use them."
"Yes, My Lady."
"That’s not the right set of tea cups, Aunt Yan. There’s a set of white jade tea cups in the treasury that I bought this afternoon. Go and bring them here."
"I’ll go immediately, My Lady."
Xiang Ling almost let out a sigh when she suddenly recalled the amount of money she had paid to the pawnshop owner for those jade tea cups. It seemed like the shop wasn’t the only thing that the previous owner of her body stole from her First brother’s family.
"Uncle Sun, ask others to arrange these pots around the courtyard. Put that dark pink Camellia flower pot in the common area inside."
"Yes, My Lady." Uncle Sun answered with a bow before he signaled the other servants to pick up the flower pots and arrange them as per their lady’s directions.
"And An Mei-"
Before Xiang Ling could have finished speaking, she was stopped by Fu Xiao who just returned to the courtyard after finishing the work that she was assigned around half an hour ago.
"Is it done?" Xiang Ling asked.
"It is done, My Lady." Fu Xiao answered before adding, "It’s getting too late and you need to rest, My Lady. You are taking way too much tension. Leave this to us. I promise that you will be satisfied with the final results."
Xiang Ling opened her mouth to deny the request when someone else spoke up first. "Fu Xiao is right. You should rest now. If you want, I will supervise their work. Besides, there’s barely anything left to do here. You have already completed setting up this courtyard."
She turned to face Wei Guang who had been by her side ever since she summoned all the servants to decorate her First Brother’s courtyard after returning from the market.
Slowly, she released a deep sigh and nodded her head. "Thank you, Ah Guang."
The man smiled at her warmly and gave her shoulder a light squeeze. Seeing how tired she looked, he wanted so badly to pull her into his arms and give her a tight hug. However, almost all the servants were there, so he held himself back and watched her leaving the courtyard.
Xiang Ling made her way to her courtyard before she entered her room and settled down at the wooden table near the huge window. Closing her eyes, she channeled her internal energy to find the balance between her divine powers and mortal body - something that had been proving to be so hard no matter how much she trained her mortal body.
Once again, she ended up using a lot of her cultivation energy as it was the only way to renovate her First Brother’s courtyard in such a short time. She didn’t make any big changes, she just used the spell to renew every part of the courtyard and ended up draining herself.
It took her around half an hour to finally balance her powers. She let out a deep sigh as she opened her eyes and at that very moment, her stomach growled loudly.
Xiang Ling groaned as she realized just how hungry she was. Since she stuffed herself with food while checking on different Inns, restaurants, and food stalls in the market streets during the first half of the day, she skipped dinner. But it seemed like exerting her cultivation powers and physical energy in renovating and decorating Chen Hao Ran’s courtyard, she ended up digesting everything she ate.
Since all the servants were busy, she decided to make her way to the kitchen and quickly prepare something for herself. It was half past eight when she walked out of her private chamber and made her way toward the kitchen.
There had been no rain these days but since it was still the peak of the rainy season, she could tell that there would be several heavy rain showers coming within the week. Unfortunately, it also meant that the construction work of the Inn would be affected.
Opening the door, she entered the kitchen which was filled with darkness. All that she needed was a click of her fingers and the kitchen immediately got filled with a warm glow as several lanterns lit up.
She quickly checked around the kitchen, looking at the stock of vegetables and other food rations to decide what she wanted to eat. After thinking for a while, she decided to make a bowl of Stir-fried noodles.
She first pulled her hair into a loose bun and secured it in place with her hairpin. Then she rolled up her sleeves and started working on her late-night dinner. She picked up some washed vegetables, meat, and eggs. Unconsciously, she started humming as she chopped the vegetables expertly.
Another little click of her fingers got the fire started and she added water to the cooking cauldron before she resumed cutting the vegetables. She took out all the spices she needed to add to her noodles. She was on her way to boil the eggs when she felt someone entering the kitchen.
As she turned around to look at the entrance, she found Li Xian standing there. The air was filled with awkwardness as the two stared at each other for a moment or two. Clearing her throat, she asked, "Are you hungry too? Want some noodles?"
Li Xian was momentarily shocked by her question and he just stared at her in silence. After a few long seconds, he finally nodded his head. "I will try a little." Even though he ate his dinner, he wasn’t going to let this chance slip where he could have a meal with his wife.
Xiang Ling nodded her head and resumed her work. From the corners of her eyes, she noticed Li Xian taking a stand not too far away from her. From his position, he had a clear view of her as she cooked the noodles in silence.
