Chapter 432: Weakness
“Were there any successful cases with those experiments? What happened to the ones that failed? Are the experiments still going on?” Ning Xuan asked.
“They were stopped long ago. There were no successful cases at all. Those so-called humanoid weapons they created either had very short lifespans, dying from genetic collapse within a year, or they’d lose control on the battlefield and become an extreme danger to their own forces.”
“The modification experiments lasted less than a year before they were banned. However, ten years later, rumors spread that Ren Pingsheng, the Lord of Myriad Phenomena Star River, possessed a secret weapon called the Undead Warrior. It seemed to be a continuation of the research institute’s experiments,” Di Youlin explained.
“The experiments were all shut down. How could they still dare to forcibly capture Half-beastmen for their modification experiments?” Ning Xuan asked in confusion.
“My Lady, after a Half-beastman comes of age, they are sent to a Female Controller to serve as a slave. These Controllers don’t see Half-beastman slaves as human at all. However, under Federation law, they have the right to do whatever they want with the Half-beastmen assigned to them. So, while the experiments were officially shut down, they’ve actually been going on all along. No one cares if a Half-beastman volunteers to be a test subject,” Qinghe said, his expression calm.
In truth, Qinghe knew about the Undead Warriors because his previous master had nearly sold him to Ren Pingsheng. He had escaped during the transaction between his former master and the people from Myriad Phenomena Star River, even managing to secure evidence of the deal. Despite that, he paid a heavy price to escape his former master. He nearly lost his life over it and would have died if he hadn’t met Ning Xuan.
“My mother refused to let the Half-Beastman Tribe raise me precisely because our situation is so tragic,” Di Youlin said, surreptitiously glancing at Ning Xuan’s expression.
Ning Xuan’s expression remained neutral. Though she disapproved of such experiments, she knew she could only control her own actions and refrain from undertaking something with such a low chance of success.
“If this really is an Undead Warrior, why that name? Can he not be killed? What are his weaknesses? Did that anesthetic even work on him?” Ning Xuan asked, staring curiously at the young man on the floor. Except for a pair of pointed ears, he looked no different from a normal person with his eyes closed.
Ning Xuan desperately wanted to go over, check his pulse, and use a Golden Needle to probe the meridians in his body.
Neither Qinghe nor Di Youlin could answer Ning Xuan’s questions, because they didn’t know the answers either.
Yan Fuzhen knew even less.
At that moment, the door to the private room was pushed open, and Yu Mingche walked in.
“Greetings, Family Head.” Yu Mingche said, bowing to Ning Xuan.
Qinghe and Di Youlin bowed to Yu Mingche.
“Family Head, someone is outside inciting the guests and causing trouble. We’ve already captured two suspicious individuals, and I’ve sent people to calm everyone down. However, it’s not very effective. Do you think we should adjust our crowd control methods?” Yu Mingche asked worriedly.
“First, have the auctioneer announce a special surprise for this auction: a case of Alienation Value Clearing Potions. There are five hundred vials in total, personally refined by an SS-level spiritual power Alchemy Master. The starting bid is 100 Star Gold, and all guests are welcome to bid.” Ning Xuan retrieved a case of the potions from her Space Button. The medicine and Elixir Pills she made had, until now, only been supplied to the military and her inner circle. She figured she could try releasing them to the market and see how they were received.
“That’s a great idea! Even the most common Alienation Value Clearing Potion costs 2,000 Star Gold and is often out of stock. With My Lady putting out so many at once, who would be willing to leave unless they have something to hide?” Di Youlin’s eyes lit up as he spoke with a smile.
“Although the cost is a bit high, it is indeed a good method. With these potions, everyone’s attention will be on the potions, and those who are secretly causing trouble will be easier to flush out,” Yu Mingche nodded in agreement.
He and Yan Fuzhen exchanged a look. Yan Fuzhen nodded and left the room to supervise a more thorough investigation.
Yu Mingche’s face turned grim as he looked at the assassin on the floor. Qinghe had already reported their conclusions to him. Seeing the mark on the assassin’s hip, Yu Mingche recognized it at a glance. This was indeed one of Myriad Phenomena Star River’s secret weapons: an Undead Warrior.
When Yu Mingche served as Governor of the Realm of Chaos, his Spiritual Sea was linked to the Master Brain, allowing his spiritual power to cover the entire realm. It was then that he witnessed the power of the Undead Warriors.
Though most of his memories from his time as Governor were erased to protect his Spiritual Sea after he left office, some of the more profound fragments always remained.
Yu Mingche produced a sharp dagger and slashed it across the assassin’s leg. The blade sliced through the skin instantly. Just as crimson blood was about to well up, a white light flashed across the wound’s surface. The deep gash healed at a rate visible to the naked eye, and in the blink of an eye, it was completely gone.
“What is this? Is he invulnerable? No, the blade cut him… but that healing is way too fast,” Ning Xuan said in astonishment.
“Qinghe, the Undead Warrior has no energy fluctuations and was protected by an Invisibility Cloak. How did you discover him?” Yu Mingche asked.
“It was just a gut feeling. I think he was about to attack My Lady. I sensed something was off about that particular space, so I made a move.” Qinghe had been on high alert ever since they’d left the room, and he was now incredibly relieved.
“Did you already know the Undead Warrior’s weakness?” Yu Mingche asked, looking at Qinghe.
“I’d heard rumors. I was just taking a shot in the dark; I didn’t actually expect it to work.” Qinghe still felt it was a stroke of luck. If he and Di Youlin hadn’t teamed up to knock the Undead Warrior out so quickly, the hidden controller would have surely noticed something was amiss and the warrior would have escaped.
“We’re lucky you were here today. I’ve heard that every Undead Warrior is incredibly expensive to create. They’re Myriad Phenomena Star River’s ultimate weapon, their last resort, and one has never been captured by outsiders before,” Yu Mingche said, looking at Qinghe with admiration.
