Chapter 160 - 124: You are... Assistant Dan?
Chapter 160: Chapter 124: You are... Assistant Dan?
"What’s up, big kitty~"
To avoid revealing her location and surroundings, Shu Yao sent Qin Shiwei a text message.
"You’re up already?" Qin Shiwei had thought she would sleep until high noon.
Shu Yao sounded a little smug. "My spiritual power isn’t half bad, huh~"
"Barely passing." Qin Shiwei then quickly and cryptically texted, "Tonight?"
"Did you forget you have another mission? Teach...er... Qin~"
"I’ll test you tonight."
Damn!
’Is this guy seriously flirting with me so deadpan?’
’He’s so good at this~’
Shu Yao continued to probe indirectly. "Are you busy right now? If you are, I won’t bother you."
The next second, she received a speech draft from him.
It started with, "To the teachers and students of Imperial High School, good afternoon..."
’Alrighty then!’
’Now I’m 100% sure that the representative from Imperial University giving the recruitment talk at Imperial High School is none other than the Commander himself!’
However, the man texted again: "If you still have the energy, I’ll just push off my work and go back to test you."
"No, no, no, don’t! I should probably review first!" Shu Yao was flustered by his flirting.
The man replied, "The results will be better if I help you review."
"No! Excessive cramming will only be counterproductive!"
Hearing the woman’s stern and righteous tone, the man let out a low chuckle.
"My teaching methods are very... flexible."
’Woman, please trust your Teacher Qin!’
"That’s enough! Get back to work!" After frantically throwing that line at him, Shu Yao bolted offline.
Afterward, Shu Yao took Xiao Juzi to Imperial High School’s high-tech Hall of Honor.
Spotting a familiar face among the photos on the honor wall, Xiao Juzi got excited. "It’s Grand-uncle~"
’So Grand-uncle was Mom’s upperclassman!’
The honor wall was also an interactive display. Tapping on an honored student’s photo revealed all the honors and awards they had received during their time at the school.
Shu Yao tapped on Shu Chao Yu’s photo. As she swiped through page after page of his past honors, she finally realized what a capable person her grand-uncle truly was.
Morals, intellect, physical education, arts, and labor—he was practically a decathlete in everything!
The scary part was, just as Jiang Fei had said, her grand-uncle had developed so many extracurricular interests, yet his academic performance in school had always been miles ahead of everyone else.
After scrolling through more than twenty pages, Shu Yao’s eyes grew wider and wider. She couldn’t help but exclaim in awe, "Honey, your grand-uncle is kind of a badass!"
Xiao Juzi declared solemnly, "Mom, I’m going to be even more amazing than Grand-uncle in the future!"
He knew that Grand-uncle’s secret base had lots of shiny gold trophies and medals. Back then, he had secretly vowed to win even more awards to give to his mom.
Shu Yao found it hard to understand. "Your grand-uncle is such a badass, with abilities comparable to someone at the Commander Level. How did he end up as a neighborhood cop where we live?"
She didn’t get it, and Xiao Juzi had no idea either.
Staring intently at the photo of the young man—refined and handsome, with eyes as deep and open as a valley—Shu Yao tried to read something from his expression.
She couldn’t see a trace of ambition.
But she couldn’t believe that her multi-talented grand-uncle would be content being a community policeman.
"Sister Yao." A voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Ke!" Xiao Juzi’s small, furry paw emerged from a hole in her clothes and waved at Ke Dancheng.
’He’s an acquaintance, so it’s okay if he sees me~’
Seeing Xiao Juzi’s fully beastified form, Ke Dancheng’s eyes lit up imperceptibly, but the flash of surprise vanished just as quickly.
He pushed up his glasses, walked over stiffly, and couldn’t help but glance at the hole in Shu Yao’s clothing.
Xiao Juzi pulled his paw back. The next second, with a little POP, his small, furry head poked out of the hole. He grinned at Ke, his triangular mouth revealing small, sharp teeth.
Shu Yao pushed the head that had captured Ke Dancheng’s attention back inside.
Ke Dancheng averted his gaze, pushing up his glasses to hide his expression. "Sister Yao... did you come specifically for the recruitment talk?"
Judging by her clothes, it didn’t seem like she had come just for that.
"No," Shu Yao said, a bit helplessly. "I was already at the school when I was looking for you. Last night, I promised my son I’d bring him here to have some fun."
Ke Dancheng asked, "So... are you two going to attend the recruitment talk?"
Shu Yao nodded. "That’s the plan."
"You can’t go dressed like that," Ke Dancheng stammered. "Last week, Wei repeatedly reminded us, and the school administration made an announcement over the broadcast system, requiring all students to wear their uniforms to the recruitment talk."
"It was never this strict before. Based on the attitude of the school and the teachers, some students speculated that the speaker coming this time might be a VIP. The rumor spread and eventually became... the Commander..."
Shu Yao nodded. ’It’s him, alright.’
Ke Dancheng said, "I have a new, unworn uniform in my dorm. I’ll go get it for you."
"Okay, thanks." Shu Yao kept her hand in her pocket, holding down the restless Xiao Juzi.
The back door of the Hall of Honor led to a shortcut to the dorms. Ke Dancheng had planned to take that shortcut, which was how he’d spotted Shu Yao.
But today, the back door of the Hall of Honor was locked.
He had to turn back and take the long way around. As he reached the front entrance, he nearly collided with a group of people.
"Hey, watch where you’re going!" a girl in a pretty dress scolded him after dodging out of the way.
Ke Dancheng moved his lips. "Sorry..."
"This dress is a limited edition! If you’d knocked me over and made me tear it, I wouldn’t have let you off the hook even if you could afford to replace it!" The girl was being unreasonably harsh, but she was actually just showing off for her friends, every word dripping with competitiveness.
Ke Dancheng pretty much understood. He was just a tool for the girl to show off her designer outfit.
He glanced over and saw that none of these girls were wearing their school uniforms on this special day, as per the school’s regulations.
Their intentions were obvious to any bystander.
Behind them, two more girls approached.
It was Huo Jiao and Lin Zhenxiang from Class One.
Lin Zhenxiang’s matcha-green, Chanel-style dress made the other girls around her pale in comparison.
"Xiangxiang, how come you didn’t wear your uniform either?" a girl asked, her tone tinged with dissatisfaction and jealousy.
Lin Zhenxiang feigned ignorance. "Do we have to wear our uniforms today? I just got back to school, so I had no idea."
The girl asked sarcastically, "You’re so close with Jiaojiao, didn’t she tell you beforehand?"
Huo Jiao wasn’t wearing a uniform either.
Lin Zhenxiang gave a graceful smile. "I was just discharged from the hospital yesterday afternoon. I was there for so long and haven’t worn pretty clothes in ages. There’s nothing wrong with me dressing up a little today, right?"
Huo Jiao spoke up defensively, "We’re all the same. None of us are wearing uniforms according to the rules, so what’s there to argue about! Anyway, I’m sure plenty of people are breaking the rule. The teachers aren’t going to kick all of us out of the recruitment talk, are they!"
The first girl, having failed to get the upper hand, was feeling a bit emotional and decided to take it out on Ke Dancheng.
"Hey, get out of the way! What’s the big idea, blocking the entrance!"
As she spoke, the girl shoved Ke Dancheng hard.
Before she could pull her hand back, the jar Ke Dancheng was holding crashed to the ground with a loud THUD.
The lid flew off, and purple-black pearls of various sizes went scattering across the floor with a RATTLE.
"Are those...?!" Huo Jiao’s astonished gaze slowly lifted from the pearls and fell upon Ke Dancheng.
"Star Scale Clam Pearls!!" someone recognized the pearls on the ground. "There are so many! Don’t tell me those are the ones from Mrs. Bao’s livestream last night!"
Lin Zhenxiang studied Ke Dancheng with a complicated expression.
This boy was the nephew of Vice District Chief Luo and Ling Yunyun. His name seemed to have the character "Dan" in it.
"You’re... Assistant Dan?"
"Mrs. Bao’s assistant?!" Huo Jiao was in disbelief. "He goes to our school!?"
"I-I’m sorry!" The girl who had hassled Ke Dancheng earlier realized she had offended someone she couldn’t afford to offend and immediately crouched down to pick up the pearls.
The other girls quickly joined in to help.
Huo Jiao placed the pearls she picked up back into the jar, unable to resist trying to confirm Ke Dancheng’s identity. "Are you really Mrs. Bao’s Assistant Dan?"
Ke Dancheng neither confirmed nor denied it.
But Lin Zhenxiang was sure he was.
The nutritional meals Ling Yunyun ate were made by Mrs. Bao, and it was Ke Dancheng who brought those meals to the hospital. He had direct contact with Mrs. Bao, and his name had "Dan" in it. If Assistant Dan wasn’t him, who else could it be!
The girls who had picked up the pearls all put them back into the jar in Ke Dancheng’s hands.
"We picked up all the pearls! I’m really sorry about before. I didn’t know you were..."
If she had known he was Mrs. Bao’s Assistant Dan, would any of this have happened?
The girl probably realized her fickle behavior was repulsive and didn’t say any more.
Ke Dancheng ignored her and held out a hand to Lin Zhenxiang.
"...Thanks."
The surrounding girls didn’t understand the situation.
Not until Lin Zhenxiang pressed her lips together and reluctantly placed a large pearl she had been clutching in her hand into Ke Dancheng’s.
"Whoa, it’s huge! Even the Empress’s jewelry set made from Star Scale Clam Pearls doesn’t have one this big, does it!" The girl’s heartfelt exclamation unintentionally eased Lin Zhenxiang’s embarrassment.
"Assistant Dan, did Mrs. Bao give you all the pearls? Can you give me one? Just a small one is fine!"
Ke Dancheng put the pearl into the jar and sealed the lid again.
"Sorry, please let me through."
He hugged the jar and walked away coolly.
The girl watched his retreating back, getting anxious. "Is he Assistant Dan or not!"
"Right now..." Lin Zhenxiang said cryptically, "is that really important?"
’Isn’t the most important thing right now to win the favor of that great person! What’s a mere assistant to some livestreamer!’
However, the "great person" in her eyes was already lofty and unattainable, someone they couldn’t reach no matter how far they stretched, an existence that often appeared in their dreams.
But Mrs. Bao’s Assistant Dan was different. He went to the same school as them!
The girl said, excited yet regretful, "We’re graduating in just over a month! We have to get on good terms with this Assistant Dan during this time! Maybe we can even get some news about Mrs. Bao from him!"
Lin Zhenxiang’s expression darkened. "He’s not necessarily Assistant Dan!"
"Whether he is or not, there’s no harm in getting on his good side!" the girl said, holding onto a sliver of hope. "Besides, what if he is!"
