Chapter 966: Chapter 985: Who Says Big Brother Isn’t Nitpicky?

Grandma Mo was chatting with Mo Si about the banquet menu while a few of the younger generation whispered among themselves off to the side. The younger girls, in particular, were still at an age where they dared to say just about anything.

"Wow, Chengyu, is that really Mo Si?" a younger cousin asked, cupping her face and leaning close to Mo Chengyu. "The ’perfect king’ filter I had for him is completely shattered."

"Yeah, I know!" another younger cousin agreed, looking disillusioned. "How can the great general be discussing food and drinks? And he’s so picky about it, too! Ugh, the stoic general filter is gone, but the ’good husband’ filter has definitely taken its place!"

"..."

"That’s all it took to shatter your filters?" Mo Chengyu scoffed. "You guys haven’t even seen him at his absolute worst."

She immediately recounted all the sappy things Mo Si had said to praise Jiang Qiuqiu back when they first started dating last year.

GASP.

"That is unbelievable."

"You really can’t tell what a man is like in a relationship just by looking at his normal behavior."

"Hey, Mo Si just criticized a few more restaurants. I think Grandma Mo is going to lose her mind."

It had been over twenty minutes, and they still hadn’t picked a chef. No matter who Grandma Mo suggested, Mo Si found a million reasons to reject them.

"Alright, alright, I’m done picking," Grandma Mo said, truly at her wit’s end. "You pick someone yourself."

"None of them are good enough." He skimmed through the list, pondered for a moment, and finally looked up. "I’ll do it myself."

Grandma Mo stared at him, a giant question mark practically hovering over her head.

"I know how to cook," Mo Si explained. He knew his cooking might not be the absolute best, nor could it compare to those master chefs. However... "She’ll be happier eating the food I make."

His cousins’ jaws dropped! The rest of the Mo family, who had pretended to be busy but were secretly eavesdropping, were equally astounded!

If he was willing to do it himself, there was nothing left to debate. They decided Mo Si would set the menu, buy the groceries two days in advance, and have them delivered to the house. Then, the housekeeper who usually cooked the daily meals could act as his sous-chef, or he could simply use a cooking robot. That worked perfectly.

With everything settled and another task checked off the list, Mo Si finally relaxed. Unable to help himself, he immediately checked his terminal. Qiuqiu had sent a message.

He opened it right away. Whenever he wasn’t by her side, he could rarely reply to Qiuqiu instantly. Even though they were using the hyper-fast network, their communication felt as slow as sending letters by carrier pigeon. Mo Si felt a deep pang of guilt for being such an unpunctual boyfriend, so during his downtime, he made sure to reply to her messages the very second he saw them.

"I’ve arrived," her message read.

"Mm, we had a good talk. I’ll tell you about it when I get back," he replied.

"Why don’t you stay at your family’s house a bit longer?" she asked.

"I miss you."

"SHEESH, so cheesy."

Looking at the typed-out sound, Mo Si could perfectly picture how Qiuqiu was lying on her bed, her expression animated as she sent that reply. A smile subconsciously crept onto his lips.

"But I realized I miss you a little too," she added.

The gentleness on Mo Si’s face deepened. "Then I’ll head back now."

"Don’t worry, they aren’t angry," he continued. "They were just saying earlier that they were afraid I’d be single for the rest of my life. With you around, everyone is very relieved."

The subtext was clear: because of her, he wouldn’t end up a lonely old bachelor.

"Ah, that sounds so mushy," she replied.

"Do you not like hearing it?"

"I confess, I’m tacky like that—I love it! Hahaha!"

Virtual text on a screen simply wasn’t warm enough.

Mo Si put away his terminal. The Mo family was accustomed to partings; coming and going to guard the borderlands was something everyone had long grown used to.

"Grandma, I’m going to head back now," he announced.

"Go on, go on. Is your girl looking for you?"

"No. I’m just the one who wants to see her."

With that, he flashed a rare smile, put on his overcoat, wrapped his scarf snugly around his neck, and set off into the vast, snowy afternoon.

In the past, he had never worn scarves.
