Chapter 98: Chapter 97: The Combat-Adept Shi Changying, Unprecedented Shock
[Only I am the first]: Today is another day of getting all the questions right. I really am the smartest.
Below was an attached picture of a math test paper. The questions included the classic "chickens and rabbits in the same cage" puzzle and tree-planting word problems.
Hua Shao fell silent. She couldn’t believe it was actually an elementary school student.
She sighed. Bullying an elementary schooler really did make her feel a bit guilty. When she went on her business trip to Jianghuai, she would bring this kid some toys to express her apology. After silently liking the post and leaving a comment saying, "Keep it up, calculus is waiting for you," she opened her chat with Qingyuan.
[HS]: You actually had an elementary school student help you. How embarrassing.
[Qingyuan]: ?
Although Qingyuan wasn’t good at STEM subjects, she was naturally perceptive and realized something was off. She wondered why Hua Shao was bringing up an elementary school student and what exactly she had dug up. Suddenly, she remembered seeing Shi Changying memorizing elementary school English vocabulary and doing elementary school math problems...
In a way, she really was an elementary school student.
Qingyuan raised her eyebrows, feeling extremely pleased. She asked Sister Xu to order lunch for the entire cast and crew. Since Hua Shao had suffered a setback today, she was going to treat everyone to a meal.
During the long break that afternoon.
Shi Changying got her phone back. She fiddled with it for a while before asking, "Why did my phone get a virus?"
"You probably clicked on a link you shouldn’t have," Shaoyuan said.
Shi Changying only caught the last part. "Shouldn’t have?" Then she definitely should have. But what kind of link was considered something she shouldn’t click? She still needed to research this further.
"Senior Sister! I just went to the Student Council, and your name is on the list for the arts festival!" Song Qingmu ran into the classroom, looking rather excited. "Why did you sign up behind our backs?"
Lu Mi gasped in awe. "Our Yingying is actually skilled in singing and dancing?"
Hearing this, Shi Changying agreed wholeheartedly. "I am indeed skilled in swinging and lancing."
Song Qingmu was speechless.
Lu Mi was equally speechless.
Although it sounded similar, they had a strong feeling those weren’t the same words!
"If Senior Sister didn’t sign up herself, then who did?" Song Qingmu suddenly realized what was going on. "The Arts Department is responsible for organizing this, and I remember Meng Shuyan happens to be in that department. Ha, he did it on purpose! He wants to embarrass Senior Sister!"
"Exactly! Our Yingying wouldn’t even care about a mere eight thousand yuan prize. This is just blatant bullying!" Lu Mi said fiercely. "Don’t worry, with our young master here, it doesn’t matter who put your name on that list. We can get it taken off!"
Shi Changying’s ears suddenly perked up. "I’m going," she interrupted.
Eight thousand. That could buy five hundred cups of milk tea. She indignantly wondered who dared to claim she would look down on such a prize.
Lu Mi’s voice came to a screeching halt. Her eyes went blank as she tried to recall what exactly she had just said to make Shi Changying change her mind.
Shaoyuan looked at her. "Are you really going?"
"I’m going," Shi Changying confirmed.
"Then what do you plan to perform, Senior Sister?" Song Qingmu scratched his head. "Our class never gets involved in these kinds of shows. If you’re going to participate, we definitely have to help out."
"Arts festivals are just singing, dancing, and stand-up comedy. It’s been the same every year." Lu Mi counted on her fingers. "The easiest one is singing. How about you sing, Yingying? I’ll drag a few strong guys from our class to be your backup singers."
"Singing?" Shi Changying thought about it and nodded. "That works."
Song Qingmu grew excited and slapped the table. "Senior Sister, give us a snippet! We haven’t heard you sing before."
The theme song of a recent web drama was quite catchy, and she had hummed along to it before. So, under the expectant gazes of her classmates, Shi Changying began to sing.
Her classmates’ expressions shifted from shock to sluggishness, and finally to a total loss of the light of life, as if they had just suffered a devastating blow. Only Shaoyuan remained calm. Propping his head on his hand, he raised an eyebrow, seemingly having discovered something highly amusing.
When Shi Changying finished singing, she found the entire class staring at her blankly, looking as if the sky had fallen.
She paused. "Did I not sing well?"
"It was great!" Song Qingmu snapped out of his daze and started clapping wildly. "It’s just that I don’t know how to appreciate it properly. Little Lu, you tell her!"
Lu Mi touched her nose guiltily. "Ah, I forgot to get water. I’ll go fill my cup first." She slipped away in a flash.
Seeing her make a run for it, Song Qingmu hurriedly followed behind.
In a corner of the corridor, the two exchanged a glance and let out long sighs.
"I didn’t expect Senior Sister’s voice to sound so nice when she speaks, only for her to be completely tone-deaf. She’s completely off-key! Even if I wanted to praise her against my conscience, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it."
"Hey, you can’t put it like that. The fact that Yingying didn’t hit a single note on key is a supreme skill in itself! It’s just as hard as getting a zero on a test instead of a perfect score!"
Song Qingmu admired Lu Mi’s silver tongue and gave her a thumbs-up. "As expected of you. You really should write a book on high-EQ communication."
After finishing their whispering, they filled their cups and turned around, only to find Shi Changying staring at them faintly. She had followed them at some point and clearly heard every word they said.
Lu Mi froze for a second before blurting, "The wind is awfully noisy today, it’s making me dizzy. I must have been possessed by a ghost to sprout such nonsense."
Song Qingmu was rendered speechless once again. He didn’t have Lu Mi’s gift of the gab. Was it too late for him to run?
The two returned to the classroom, looking completely deflated.
Shi Changying followed behind them, pulling out her phone to search for the meaning of "tone-deaf." When she saw the words "extremely poor singing ability," she fell silent.
Empress Taichu refused to accept this reality. And so, she took a detour to the locker room and recorded another tune she was familiar with, then posted the audio clip to her Moments. It was also her very first Moments post.
[Only I am the first]: Am I really tone-deaf and completely off-key?
[The Dad Who Will Pass the Throne to Me]: Who said that? Forget hitting the notes, even if there were five hundred notes, my daughter would hit every single one!
[Qingyuan]: Sister Ying, your singing is truly unprecedented and will never be replicated. In all of history, there is only you.
[Xu Shuangqiao]: Wow, Yingying has a talent for music! Once my drama starts shooting, I’ll have Yingying sing the theme song!
Shi Changying left a unified reply below:
[A bunch of treacherous sycophants.]
She thought, "To flatter Us so excessively, they must be trying to hinder Our progress. Their motives are truly punishable by death."
Back in the classroom, Shi Changying seemed to remember something. She reached out and poked Shaoyuan. He tilted his head slightly to look at her and let out a soft, questioning "Mm?"
"Do you know how to sing?" she asked.
"No," he replied.
Well, at least she knew how to sing. Having comforted herself, Shi Changying focused on the class.
Meanwhile, during a break in the drama’s filming.
Sister Xu was startled to see Qingyuan staring up at the sky with an expression of profound sorrow. "A Yuan, what’s wrong? Did something happen?"
"My reputation is ruined," Qingyuan said. "I’ve become a treacherous sycophant."
Sister Xu was baffled. "???" She raised her hand to check the temperature of Qingyuan’s forehead and muttered, "You don’t have a fever. Why are you sprouting nonsense in broad daylight?"
Qingyuan stretched lazily. She thought, "Her Majesty’s singing... is indeed terrifying enough to shake the heavens and make ghosts weep."
Two days later at ten in the morning.
Golden sunlight spilled across the floor. Xie Qingshi pushed open the door, having just wrapped up his current phase of music composition. He picked up the phone he had left outside; it was his habit to isolate himself from the outside world while working.
Hearing the noise, his assistant walked over from the other side and asked with a smile, "Sir, what would you like to eat today?"
"Something light is fine," Xie Qingshi replied while opening his messaging app.
This was his private account, and his contact list was pitifully small. The Moments feed was basically just Pei Xuan posting by himself. Xie Qingshi wasn’t interested in Pei Xuan’s daily life. He skimmed through rapidly until he saw Shi Changying’s Moments post.
"Tone-deaf? Completely off-key?" Xie Qingshi found this self-description quite interesting, so he clicked on the audio clip.
The singing started abruptly, the cold and clear female voice echoing through the quiet living room.
Startled, the assistant immediately covered his ears and complained, "Who is singing? Not a single note is on key! To put it bluntly, it’s just—"
His words were left unfinished.
The assistant stared in horror at the tears streaming down Xie Qingshi’s face and blurted out, "Sir, you... why are you crying?"
