Chapter 64: Chapter 63: The Manipulated Emperor Chengtian, All Parties Mobilize

"C-coming right up!" Song Qingmu remained stunned. Clearly, the scene before him had delivered such a massive shock that his brain had essentially stopped working.

Shaoyuan calmly instructed, "The school uniform jacket."

Lu Mi was the first to snap back to reality. She grabbed the oversized uniform jacket and draped it over Shi Changying’s shoulders. Only then did Shaoyuan walk out the classroom door.

A heavy silence stretched for another dozen seconds before Song Qingmu finally reacted and chased after him.

"Hey, Young Master, wait for us!" Lu Mi and a few other classmates followed suit.

Shaoyuan had already carried Shi Changying into the elevator on his back. He could feel her body growing hotter by the second, accompanied only by the sound of her shallow breathing. He frowned. "Don’t fall asleep yet. Talk to me. Who am I?"

Shi Changying forced herself to stay awake. She stared at his ear for a long while before finally speaking. "You are a kindhearted person."

Shaoyuan remained noncommittal to the term. "You’ve met quite a few kindhearted people."

Using her fever-addled brain to think for a moment, Shi Changying said, "You are the kindhearted person I want to replace."

Even at a time like this, she was still thinking about such things. Even someone with the formidable emotional control of Emperor Chengtian didn’t know whether to be angry or amused.

Perhaps because she hadn’t received a response, Shi Changying added, "You are the first kindhearted person I’ve ever met."

To her, the word "first" held extreme importance.

Shaoyuan’s footsteps paused for a fraction of a second before he repeated those same two words. "Don’t sleep."

By the time he reached the school gates, the ambulance had just arrived. Shaoyuan handed Shi Changying over to the paramedics and climbed into the ambulance as well. He quietly watched the girl lying on the stretcher, his expression impassive.

The nurse beside him misunderstood the situation and offered a comforting smile. "Don’t worry, little student. Your little girlfriend will be fine."

Shaoyuan lowered his eyes. His tone betrayed neither joy nor anger. "She is indeed a child."

He was a solitary man who had outlived his era; why would he get angry at a child from two thousand years in the future? It would only make him seem petty.

The nurse continued chattering, "Studying is important, of course, but she definitely needs to take care of her health. Once your little girlfriend wakes up, you must give her a good talking-to."

Shaoyuan raised an eyebrow. "Alright. I’ll give her a talking-to."

Trailing behind the ambulance, Lu Mi, Song Qingmu, and a few other warmhearted classmates hailed a cab. Inside the car, Song Qingmu patted his chest. "I thought there was something wrong with my eyes, but there wasn’t! The Young Master actually carried Senior Sister on his back!"

"Yingying is too skinny. Even I can barely carry her. But thanks to our efforts, she’s finally put on a little weight," Lu Mi said. "The Young Master has always been helpful, and Yingying is his desk mate. Besides, who would have the heart to just let Yingying faint from a fever?"

Song Qingmu was convinced. "That’s true."

The car arrived at Jianghuai First Hospital, and the students piled out. After taking a couple of steps, Song Qingmu stopped in his tracks.

Something wasn’t right. Over the past two-plus years they had been in the same class as Shaoyuan, quite a few students had fallen ill. As the class monitor of Grade 12 Class 17 and the president of the student council, Shaoyuan had delivered medicine, called emergency numbers, and even summoned doctors. Song Qingmu racked his brain for a long time but simply couldn’t recall Shaoyuan ever carrying anyone on his back other than Shi Changying.

"Maybe my memory is just bad," Song Qingmu muttered, knocking on his own head. "Anyway, the Young Master is a genuinely great person."

"Of course the Young Master is great," Lu Mi said matter-of-factly. "Even Meng Qi’an treats him with the utmost respect. If this were ancient times, the Young Master would absolutely be a King with a massive following."

Song Qingmu wholeheartedly agreed. "Exactly! If we were born in a turbulent era and the Young Master started a rebellion, I’d follow him immediately!"

Lu Mi continued to look at him with disdain. "Just don’t drag the Young Master down."

"How is that possible? I, Old Song, am a capable man!" Song Qingmu retorted indignantly. "I won’t lower myself to your level. I’m going to ask the Young Master which ward Senior Sister is in."

Meanwhile, Old Madam Xu had rushed back from her company to the Old Xu Mansion.

"Old Madam, you’ve finally returned." Housekeeper Xu continuously wiped the sweat from his forehead. "This Miss Lu Qingyuan is a bit different from the rumors. Her presence is much more imposing than many celebrities."

Old Madam Xu looked up and immediately spotted Qingyuan sitting upright on the sofa. The woman was breathtakingly beautiful, but her gaze was so resolute—as if she had devoted her entire being to the nation—that it extinguished any profane thoughts one might harbor toward her.

Housekeeper Xu wiped his sweat again. "Old Madam, she is here to see Miss Changying."

Old Madam Xu’s expression changed. She stepped forward and said, "Miss Lu, I am Changying’s grandmother. Did she do something wrong? Did she upset you? Please tell me; I absolutely will not show her any favoritism!"

These words made Sister Xu doubt her own ears.

Qingyuan’s gaze suddenly sharpened. "Old Madam, I haven’t even mentioned why I am looking for her. Why are you so quick to assume that she has done something wrong? Are you truly her grandmother?"

The doubt in her eyes was genuine, yet she remained perfectly courteous and maintained an impeccable demeanor. But it was precisely this kind of look that made Old Madam Xu feel thoroughly flustered, as if she had been completely seen through. "No, it’s because she has a history of this. She..."

Housekeeper Xu hastily interjected, "Miss Changying has a rather poor temper and often offends her elders. Because of this, the Old Madam mistakenly assumed she had angered you again."

"Oh?" Qingyuan gave a thoughtful smile, her voice light and airy. "I wonder what kind of elder gets offended so easily?"

Old Madam Xu was rendered speechless, but she couldn’t afford to lose her temper in front of outsiders. She said in a deep voice, "She is a student in the regular classes at Jianghuai High School. By the time she gets back, it will be past ten o’clock."

"That late?" Sister Xu was taken aback. "A Yuan, why don’t we—"

"I’ll wait, no matter how late," Qingyuan interrupted.

Housekeeper Xu was somewhat amazed. What exactly had Miss Changying done to make a major star like Lu Qingyuan willing to wait so long for her? Old Madam Xu wanted to know the same thing, but Qingyuan showed zero intention of explaining, and the Old Madam couldn’t bring herself to lower her pride and ask.

The atmosphere in the living room grew heavy, making Sister Xu feel rather restless. She looked at Qingyuan’s persistently straight back, silently praising her artist’s impeccable posture, a true testament to her background as a traditional opera performer.

Fortunately, the sound of the front door opening saved her from the awkwardness. Housekeeper Xu also breathed a sigh of relief. "Miss Shuangqiao has returned."

"Teacher Lu?" Seeing Qingyuan, Xu Shuangqiao was stunned. "W-when did you get here?"

"Two hours ago," Sister Xu replied weakly.

There were still five hours left until ten o’clock. Qingyuan finally revealed her first genuine smile of the day. "Hello, Miss Shuangqiao."

"Teacher Lu, I’m your fan. I—" Before Xu Shuangqiao could finish her sentence, her phone began to ring. She answered it, and after hearing just one sentence, her expression changed drastically. "What? Yingying is hospitalized with a high fever? I’ll head over right now. Thank you for telling me."

Qingyuan’s eyebrow twitched. "Miss Shuangqiao?"

"I’m so sorry, Teacher Lu." Xu Shuangqiao hurriedly hung up the phone. "I have to go to the hospital. It’s probably because she stayed in the water too long yesterday, compounded by the fact that she was already sick."

Qingyuan’s expression shifted as well. She immediately stood up. "I’ll go with you."

"A Yuan, are you crazy?" Sister Xu panicked. "It was fine on the floor you were hospitalized on because there was no one else around. But other areas have so much foot traffic! What if you get photographed..."

"I’m not crazy," Qingyuan said coldly. "I know exactly what I am doing."

For someone like her, who had never experienced much warmth in life, she would never give up—even if there was only a sliver of hope.
