Chapter 48: Chapter 47: Old-Fashioned Senior Sister, the Photo Was Presented to Pei Xuan
The girl stopped at the first snack stall by the entrance of the night market and ordered one of every kind of fried skewer on display. Seeing a big customer arrive, the stall owner beamed with joy.
Shi Changying took out her phone.
"Miss, the QR code is right here," the owner kindly reminded her, pointing to the top right corner.
Shi Changying looked thoughtful for a moment before giving up. "What’s a QR code?"
She recalled that when Ming Chengli paid, he only had to wave his phone, and it was done. Why did she need a QR code?
The owner was dumbfounded. He wondered if this girl was some relic from the deep mountains who had no idea that electronic payments were the norm now.
The awkward silence hung in the air for a dozen seconds before a set of footsteps stopped beside Shi Changying.
"I’ll pay in cash," a calm voice chimed in. A slender hand extended, holding a hundred-yuan bill. "Keep the change."
The owner’s face lit up with a smile, and he immediately started frying the skewers.
Shi Changying turned her head.
It was a young man wearing a mask and a hat. His face was hidden, revealing only a pair of bright, crystal-clear eyes that sparkled like stars.
At the moment their gazes met, Xie Qingshi finally got a clear look at her appearance.
It was a breathtakingly beautiful face, entirely unadorned yet possessing an otherworldly grace. It was the kind of face one could never forget after a single glance.
However, the girl’s complexion was sickly pale, and her frame was frail. Yet, there was not a trace of weakness in her eyes. When her gaze swept over him, it was like a cold blade being drawn from its sheath—sharp and indifferent in a way that completely belied her age.
Xie Qingshi paused slightly.
Shi Changying crossed her arms and asked lazily, "Are you treating me to a meal?"
Hearing this, Xie Qingshi’s eyes curved into a smile. "Thank you for saving me just now."
Shi Changying’s attention had already been hijacked by the rich, savory aroma of the food, so she didn’t answer.
Seeing her staring intently at the fried skewers in the owner’s hands, Xie Qingshi couldn’t help but smile. At least this demeanor made her look like a typical girl her age.
A few minutes later, Shi Changying received a whole bucket of fried skewers.
She sat down on a small folding stool next to the stall and dug right in.
When his gaze fell once more on her overly youthful face, Xie Qingshi felt a slight sense of daze.
The year the Empress ascended the throne, she had only been eighteen—the exact age of a current high school senior.
A bold and unrestrained youth was like the morning sun; even before fully rising, it already radiated boundless light.
Shi Changying ate quickly, but not a single drop of grease stained her hands. It seemed she had quite a high level of expertise when it came to food.
"Slow down—" Before Xie Qingshi could finish his sentence, he watched her polish off the last five skewers like a whirlwind sweeping away the clouds. He paused, a gentle smile in his eyes. "Are you full?"
Shi Changying considered herself a very upright Emperor, possessing the great virtue of honesty. "No."
Assuming she was just at a growing age, Xie Qingshi nodded. He walked over to another stall to buy her a few portions of grilled cold noodles, asking the owner to add extra meat.
Shi Changying continued eating, completely unbothered that her astonishing appetite was leaving the night market vendors utterly flabbergasted.
After finishing, she wiped her hands and stood up, still maintaining that lazy posture. "Thanks, kind stranger."
In her mind, anyone who treated her to a meal was a kind stranger.
"You pulled me back and saved me from a car accident. I’m the one who should be thanking you." Xie Qingshi glanced at his watch; it was two-thirty in the morning. "Why are you out buying food so late? Where do you live? Should I walk you back? You should go home early so your family doesn’t worry."
Shi Changying waved her hand dismissively and walked away, her hands stuffed in her pockets.
She had woken up hungry in the middle of the night, so she scaled the wall to sneak out of the Old Xu Mansion. Partially, it was to get something to eat, but it was also to practice her modern survival skills.
Xie Qingshi watched her leave and murmured softly, "What a strange little girl..."
What was even stranger was that he had originally felt a lingering sense of palpitation and panic from a nightmare, yet this chance encounter had relaxed his mind and body more than ever before.
CLICK.
The sound of a camera shutter echoed in the dark, capturing the scene.
It was two paparazzi who had been tailing Xie Qingshi the whole way.
This was Xie Qingshi’s first time holding a concert in Jianghuai. The tickets had sold out long ago, and one couldn’t even buy them at inflated prices, which showed just how incredibly popular he was.
The more famous Xie Qingshi became, the more media outlets kept a close eye on him. But to the disappointment of the paparazzi, ever since Xie Qingshi made a name for himself under the stage name Xie Lin four years ago, he hadn’t had a single scandal.
He was like a flawless gentleman depicted in ancient texts—elegant in temperament, aloof as bamboo, humble, and polite. It was impossible to find a single fault with him.
After receiving their assignment, the two paparazzi had followed Xie Qingshi for three or four days. They had been on the verge of giving up, never expecting to stumble upon such a massive scoop.
"I didn’t expect Xie Lin to meet his girlfriend late at night. This is huge news!"
"Looks like Xie Lin isn’t totally detached from worldly desires after all. He even comes to this kind of night market to buy food."
Looking at the dozens of photos on the camera, the two paparazzi were buzzing with excitement and immediately reported the matter to their headquarters.
As expected, their boss placed great importance on this firsthand breaking news. "Why is the person so small in the photos? Can you tell which wealthy family’s daughter she is?"
One of the paparazzi replied, "We can’t tell. We were too far away, and we didn’t dare get too close. Xie Lin’s hearing is inhuman; it’s like he has super hearing."
"Fair enough. You guys worked hard this time." The boss was very satisfied and muttered, "Still, going on a date at a night market is a rather niche preference. Get ready; we’ll release the news first thing in the morning."
Having met their quota, the two paparazzi headed home, beaming with joy.
The night gradually faded as the sky brightened. A new day had arrived.
Pei Family’s old house.
Pei Xuan woke up very early. Just as he finished washing up and opened his door, he saw Housekeeper Pei standing right outside.
Upon seeing him, Housekeeper Pei immediately said respectfully, "Young Master."
Pei Xuan shot him a glance. "Do you have nothing better to do this early in the morning? Are you acting as a guardian deity to watch over the courtyard here?"
"How could that be?" Housekeeper Pei felt deeply wronged. "I was out handling business for you, Young Master. The matter yielded results, so of course, I had to report back to you immediately."
Pei Xuan walked downstairs. "What business did I have you handle?"
Housekeeper Pei said, "Didn’t you say to have someone keep an eye on Xie Lin?"
Pei Xuan raised an eyebrow. "I almost forgot about that. Go on, what’s up with him?"
"Around two o’clock this morning, he sneaked out of his hotel to go on a date with his girlfriend," Housekeeper Pei said with a serious expression. "He was photographed by the paparazzi, and that’s how we got the news."
Pei Xuan’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "Do you know the consequences of lying to me?"
He wondered if Xie Qingshi actually had a girlfriend. Would he? Even if the sun were to rise in the west, the Four Great Young Masters were only fit to be single together.
"Young Master, how would I dare lie to you?" Housekeeper Pei felt even more wronged. "I have photos as proof!"
"Photos?" Pei Xuan remained unconvinced.
Housekeeper Pei handed over a file folder. "Please take a look, Young Master."
